I received my sample of the Free Pro 3 and wanted to share some details with you.

When looking at the images (old Free Pro 2 always to the left) you can see that the new one increased in size slightly. Not only the charging box got larger but also the unit itself is slightly thicker now which would suggest a bigger battery for both. The ear wings remained more or less the same as before thus after some time the rubber will probably get loose just like on the old one, but the angle changed, they aim more upwards now. Tips are slightly different than before and they are round now, but even the largest tip size is slightly smaller than the previous one, because of this I get a worse hold with the new ones as they tend to slip out easier at least for me.

I won’t comment on sound quality as Earfun’s tuning is just a place holder for me, it sounds grainy and bassy but I have definitely heard much worse.

Controls etc are exactly the same as they were before, tapping on the right one increases volume, decreases on the left one, double tapping starts or stops playback etc, no real changes here.

I tried both ANC and transparency mode again like before by keeping the left unit touched for some seconds and to my surprise both seem to perform worse than on the old Free Pro 2. Especially transparency mode lacks that transparency, it hardly passes through any treble, the old one sounded more natural to me although still far from perfect. ANC seems to block out less mids now while already the Free Pro 2 was no class leader here. I asked Earfun about this and allegedly they are still trying to optimise this.

The biggest changes are under the hood, these improvements over the old model are definitely welcome although the new codecs will be of little benefit for iOS users:

1、Drivers:  from 6mm to 7mm for a better sound;

2、Use Qualcomm QCC 3072 Chip with aptX™ Adaptive Audio,Support Qualcomm® Snapdragon Sound™

3、Better Battery life, Total 33 hours;

4、Enhanced 6-Microphone CVC Technology for Crystal Clear Call

5、Bluetooth 5.3, support LE Audio.

6、Multipoint function, Connect to two devices at a time

Earfun also applied the High-Res certification, for LDAC support but they are still waiting for the results.

I am still waiting for details about a possible cooperation. I assume Earfun wants to release an own “Oluv’s edition” aside the regular one. Unfortunately they won’t give me access to the DSP and I am not sure they will accept my requirements because this time I want to include various tunings for different ear canals selectable through the app, otherwise I would like to allow for custom settings to be imported through the app as files or whatever and maybe even allow for an “expert EQ” which gives you access to all the parametric filters. I highly doubt they will customise the app in such a way to allow for all those features without getting access to the DSP I won’t be able to fine tune the volume curve or maybe even include dynamic filters for loudness compensation at low levels etc. I have way more ideas which I would like to have included but this probably won’t happen with this product.

Therefore as for now just see it as a hypothetical project, I definitely won’t invest my time into some half hearted approach with too many trade offs.

That is nice to have a little sneak preview there. I like the design of the Free Pro 2 better if I'm completely honest. I also have tried the EarFun Air Pro 3 and I suspect it has the same kind of ANC I also preferred the ANC/Transparency of the Free Pro 2. AirReps only works with the Airoha chipset, so it's probably not going to work with that app. The EQ inside EarFun app for the Air Pro 3 is very limited right now and I've had no way to get a enjoyable sound out of them with the app. They have this mid range peak resonance I could not get rid off. Hopefully there will come a possibility for a full parametric EQ, but I am not sure they will make this happen. I do understand you do ask for these requirements and I'm curious if they will offer a good ability to do so.

Honestly I also prefer the overall looks and handling of the Free Pro 2, but if they manage to get a decent app to customise the sound for the new one it could become a gem.

EarFun also says they provide LE audio for the EarFun Air Pro 3 and it came with it enabled at first - but they pointed out there's no support yet on Android for LE audio and when it will be supported they will enable LE audio again. I suspect the same goes for this product. I have had it working with LE audio a couple of firmware version back for one time and when I put and removed the buds from the cased it said connected, but there was simply no sound. EarFun pointed out because of no support there's no sound on LE audio on Android. It sounds nice on a spec sheet but sometimes it really takes longer to receive full compatibility for it. The audio community is a little obsessed with specs and codecs and things I've noticed. Like one of your videos I am of the opinion it's all about frequency response too. I also have other earbuds that I tuned with LDAC and even DSEE extreme and the EarFun Free Pro 2 with the latest tuning and adjustments from my side sounds better and more detailed to me - from a single 6mm driver. I have tested multiple earbuds on LDAC not only Sony ones and also also once that are multi driver as well - yet the sound quality on FP2 to me with personalized tuning is the best sound quality for me in my opinion.

Do you know if it will have an app EQ? That would be great if we could select different canal tunings via the app. Truly unique! I've thought about glueing the ear wings so they stay in place, maybe some kind of silicone?...

S. Ayar

I hope it's possible for you to make tunings for different ear canals for this one! That would be the best news of the year!

oluvsgadgets

It has a fixed band EQ with 10 filters. But nothing you can use for serious tuning

Douwe de Vries

I'm a little surprised by that. You would think it's not that difficult to just offer a 10 band EQ with Q factor control. That would offer a lot better customizability if you compare it to the EarFun app right now. It only has 6 bands to play with (reduction only possible to -10 dB as well) and no Q factor control or whatsoever..

OP1M.DR3M

Ahh... Well, better than nothing.. Using the fixed 10 band EQ, do you find it to be a decent offering compared to other tws on the market?

Anonymous

My ear resonance is around 6200-6300 hertz. I'm 33 years old. Sounds metallic or like razor blades when there are peaks.

oluvsgadgets

I haven’t managed to install the app yet. Waiting for the beta, then I can tell.

Douwe de Vries

Yeah agreed. Other brands do offer Q factor control, for example Moondrop with their TWS. In my opinion if EarFun wants to stay competitive with sound then I would like to see this too. If not I'm not really interested in future IEMs from them I think. Like you said a basic and advanced option that would be really nice. For the basic one to have the implementation as is right now, and advanced with extra bands and Q factor control and the ability to reduce beyond 10 dB and boost above that as well. I guess we will see how this develops further.

Tamás Major

Any news of a collaboration? Are they still not giving you permission to tweak the device? I really need a new pair of TWS because my old Free Pro 1 is getting more and more sensitive to the wireless noise at home. I don't want to buy the Free Pro 2 because of the lack of AptX and the lower BT version. I'm expecting more stability and better performance from the newer technologies. I was able to tune my old Free Pro One very accurately thanks to Oluv's EQ settings, advice and explanations. I really would not want to lose that highly personalized sound and the freedom of the high range of parametric EQ with its great Q option. However, my hardware is slowly falling apart, and the increasingly frequent clicks, pops and inconsistent playback speed are driving me crazy.

oluvsgadgets

Aptx is obsolete if the sounds is not right. You can have the best codecs but if the final tuning is off, you won’t get any benefit at all, the details are in the smoothness of the perceived frequency spectrum and I cannot achieve that for the Free Pro 3 with the internal EQ, because I cannot control it fine enough. Latest status is that the Free Pro 3 will have my sound setting included and although it doesn’t sound bad compared to the competition and should be more balanced it just not the same as a properly tuned sound compensating for one’s ear canal resonance.

Tamás Major

True, but right now I'm on the opposite side: the tuning of my Free Pro 1 is very pleasing for my ears, but the hardware, the BT transmission and/or Codec are letting me down. Unfortunately I don't expect too much from a fixed EQ Settings in Free Pro 3 tuned for your ears, as I 100% know, that my ear canals differ from yours, and my ears cut high frequencies much earlier than your, so without a proper EQ adjustments it won't fit 'tight' enough and it won't be enjoyable to me compared to my Free Pro One. I was also thinking about buying the Earfun Air Pro 3, as it promises a 10 band EQ, although it is not parametric just a simple EQ with +-10 levels (db I guess) but no Q value available. But maybe I have luck, and it can come close to my actual settings. The elongated form doesn't bother me, the sound and a stable connection is what really matters. I assume, that you didn't ever have a chance to try Air Pro 3, so you can't say anything about it default tuning?
