Dan and Phil can definitely be very chaotic, especially in their baking videos lol. It might be a lot for someone who’s never watched them before, but you do get used to it once you get to know their personalities a little more. But yeah, watching their coming out video (both Dan’s individual one and the one where they revealed their relationship) is definitely a must. It gives you a little more serious side to them, although they do still make jokes and manage to be funny even in the more serious stuff :)

Dan and Phil kind of had an arc re: the closet where in 2009 baby 18 year old Dan was posting whatever because online didn’t seem like it counted as real life. Then when they started getting popular enough that friends and family might actually see this stuff (or the speculation that was already rampant about his sexuality) around 2012, tried to shut it all down and erase old posts and convince the public he wasn’t gay (because of a lot of internalized homophobia and trauma as explained in his coming out video). Millions of teenagers still shipped Dan and Phil together though (ship name phan), and were not convinced by the claims of straightness. Dan very slowly got more comfortable over the years until in 2019 he finally came out to his family in an email and posted his magnum opus video Basically I’m Gay. Phil, who had already been out to close family and friends the whole time, posted his (much shorter) coming out video a couple weeks later. However, they wanted people to pay attention to what they were saying about internalized homophobia and bullying and their experiences, but they knew if they said “phan is real,” people would have been like “shut up, Dan” and only cared about the ship confirmation. So while it was alluded to having been romantic in the beginning, each said he wanted his private life to be private and would not talk about the current state of any romantic relationships. Since they were still living together and bought a house together in 2021, it was kind of a “we know you know” open secret situation (despite Dan’s character in some projects he did at the time being a slutty newly-out baby gay). For fans that followed them, the relationship reveal last year was not a surprise but a celebration that they finally felt comfortable enough to address it. At some point you should definitely check out both their individual coming out videos and the collaboratively gay hard launch video. I highly recommend watching the individual ones first because it sets the context.
