Zeljko Ivanek is such a great character actor. He went on to have a career that's spanned decades playing very impactful one off roles - his appearance in House was amazing. Plus he's had some notable regular roles and is currently the villain in a popular show spinoff.

As someone who is also autistic I personally also think Mulder is. He often has a flat affect (like myself), he has a special interest in aliens and supernatural phenomenon. He also seems to stim on occasion, like chewing on his sunflower seeds habitually. He also sometimes (often) makes inappropriate jokes at inappropriate times (I can relate to that a little though I'm not in the FBI so xD) I also enjoy the silly jokes and I know that happens often with law enforcement work, gallows humor. But it just fits with everything we know about Mulder. And Mulder being the only one in this episode to recognize that Roland could be doing these equations himself (even if he's technically possessed). He also talks to Roland like he's a regular person and not a child which even Scully falls victim to, though she obviously isn't doing it maliciously. Sorry for the long comment, The X Files is one of my special interests and I actually relate a lot to Mulder as an autistic person.
