"If this is the afterlife, it sucks!"--- Shaw, ever the badass, love that was her reveal line so much. At the rate "John and Samantha" (love the amount Finch first named them) had been going, I actually understand the Machines reasoning, I think, in the same way it was hostile about helping Reese find Finch, twice. That said, I also understand Roots reaction, she doesn't just love Shaw, she loves the Machine and one is in the way of getting to the other, in her mind it must extra hurt. Love Fusco helping Silva and seeing Shaw (and "others") in her.

They delivered another amazing 3-part bittersweet arc. When 'If-Then-Else' aired... they really made it seem like that was the end for Shaw. I remember Sarah Shahi giving an interview... that came out right after... about likely taking 2 years off from acting to have her twins. They had me going. Thank goodness they put us out of our misery of not knowing/mourning... but not poor Root.

Amy Acker is genuinely one of the best actors I know. The range of emotions, the subtetly yet intensity of what her facial expressions display, the perfection intonations... Root has always been my favorite character, and seeing her suffer so much because of Shaw's loss is always devastating...

Inseriousity

Personally I always hate it when characters are killed off then miraculously it’s “nope just messing” so I didn’t really like this at the time but I also avoid behind the scenes stuff to avoid spoilers. When you know this happened so the actress could have maternity leave then fair play to the writers for sorting it out in style.

Supposedly the end scene of 4x11 was deliberately written as to be ambiguous. The final sound was meant to be indistinguishable between a gunshot and the elevator doors closing. So I wouldn't call it a killing off, as it's not a case of changing their minds about whether she's dead. She was always, like Schrodinger's (shro as in shrove, no hard C sound) cat, dead and alive as far as the characters knew.

2 Years is insane given the fact that Season 5 is indeed the last. Thank goodness we know for sure aha

I know this storyline happened because Sarah got pregnant and had to be gone for a while but I love what it did for the characters. Root questioning her allegiance to the machine, her god essentially, because she can't let Shaw go is powerful in the way it shows her love and devotion to her. She'll do whatever it takes to be reunited with her love even if it means losing the one certainty she has in the machine.
