One of the things that really gets to me in this episode is the expression in the eyes of the guy at the periscope. That mix of terror and determination, to do his duty even if it means his death. Sam with letting Lucifer touch his soul and Dean with retrieving the Hand of God have the same mindset. Their war may be bigger than WWII but they're all heroically prepared to do what's needed to save the world. That's really awe-inspiring, and for all the folly of Cas's choice he's trying to do the same. 'The Vessel' has a third meaning too - someone willing to be the receptacle for the power of God. What a sacrifice. It's 'Casifer', by the way, rather than 'Castifer'. But by all means stick with Luciel.

I found the courage of the crew of the Bluefin to die rather than give up Delphine, very sad yet awe inspiring. There were many many such sacrifices during WWII, esp the French & Italian Resistance movements. BTW that was a PIECE of the Ark, not the whole thing. But I smiled at your little chuckle at the beginning when you joked that it was 'Raiders'. LOL

Dean + time travel never disappoints. This is one of my favorites for the emotional impact on both Dean & us with interactively knowing the Sub crew's fate... and for the tasty Luciel reveal. It's funny... 'The Waters of Mars' should've come to mind... but instead 'The Fires of Pompeii' did. I could hear Donna beseeching to "just save someone". Seeing Dean feel that sacrifice... the way we can feel it from just his face & eyes at the end! This is why it's Jensen who gets all the solo time travel... 1) his looks really fit well with period piece style... and 2) the way he emotes so much with just a jaw clench and watery eyes.
