I love how much you enjoyed this episode because it's one of my favorites! As a Mulder/Scully enjoyer, I love seeing Mulder so in his feelings about Scully's disappearance. Still one of my favorite Mulder looks too (five-'o-clock shadow, slightly messy hair, rumpled suit). Also the sequences with Scully's stomach being inflated are most definitely just Mulder thinking up what kind of invasive tests the aliens might be doing (because he still thought it was aliens at this point. And the scene prior was Duane mentioning the tests) which is why we cut back to him zoning out after. It's not made super clear that that's the case which I think is intentional, to make you believe she's been taken by aliens instead. Love seeing Mulder all flustered and angry and I love your reaction to all of it because, yeah, this man is absolutely losing it, mostly due to lack of sleep I'm sure. It's such a strong episode, and shows Mulder's devotion towards Scully being more important than his work (him not at all reacting to Skinner reinstating the X Files all but directly says this). There's a big reason that the term shipping came from this show and these characters, it's because of episodes like this (also Gillian and David's amazing chemistry). To me, X Files is a show about love (all kinds, familial, friendship, and also romantic). It's an underlying through-line the whole series. And I think that's beautiful.
