This was one of the first episodes not written by the existing writing staff. Vince Gilligan (who would much later go on to create 'Breaking Bad' & 'Better Call Saul') became a fan of the show from the first season. (While working on his movie script). His writing agent had a connection to Chris Carter... and got Vince a meeting with him in Los Angeles (as a fanboy). Carter asked him to pitch any story ideas he'd like to maybe write for the show. Then Gilligan wrote this and the XFs picked it up from him. Vince Gilligan said that he got the idea when he was in his hotel room the night before meeting Carter. That he noticed shadows from the bright light in his room... and started thinking about what if our shadows had a life of their own. In his original version... the shadow detached. But they ultimately didn't have the budget to do that.

I think it worked well. Like I said, it was Vastha Narada vibes and it's Peter Pan esqe. Even OUAT did a superb take on Pan
