MortalCity

When I was double checking dates I was forcibly reminded that this episode was (and still is) controversial with fans. Some think it's a great parody/satire of Satanic Panic stories while others think Chris Carter was trying his hand at a Darin Morgan-style episode and fell flat on his face. Weirdly, the only part of this I really remembered was Mulder's incredibly sad hotel room screwdriver. Oh, and Mulder mocking Scully's height. On rewatch, I'm fairly certain this episode was part of why my circle of too-young-to-be-watching-this nerdlings suddenly decided in s3 that Mulder wasn't good boyfriend material for Scully and she should maybe date her boss instead. No, I don't understand our adolescent brains either. Now that I'm older I think I get what CC was going for here, but out of all of the speculative fiction tropes this show plays with, the alignment of the planets exacerbating characters' issues is too silly for my brain to buy in this context.
