Kieran Bennett

The pacing in One Piece isn’t that bad

Brendan Brothers

The art styles in Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer make them both unwatchable

Hank

Anime dialogue works better read through subtitles than heard in English.

W. Kendal Erickson

"The MC participating in Slavery is justified because of *random contextual nonsense*" is an immediate grounds for dismissal on watching the show.

Psychopomp

World trigger is better than Dragonball and bleach

MOL352

Cowboy Beebop is overrated. Watching each episode felt like a chore. Edward was the only good thing about the show, and she just disappeared before the end to never return.

Rithika Nayar

You can't say you like anime if you refuse to watch shoujo

Rarest

The best music anime is "given"

Marsgreekgod

Dubs vs Subs is a preference, not objective.

Blake hutcheson

My Hero Academia did not fall off. It’s enjoyable all the way through because of the blend of slice of life/action and the character growth along the way.

dudelikewow

With the exclusion of Gear 5, the fights in One Piece are by far the least interesting aspect of the story. The characters, mysteries, world-building, and overall narrative are all significantly more interesting and what I come to One Piece for.

DW

Anime is cringe (and that's exactly why we like it)

Blake hutcheson

Kanojo, Okarishimasu (Rent a girlfriend) is not too long. I enjoy the chaos and tension.

Woalol

Japanese DBZ music isn't as good as people make it to be and English DBZ music isn't as bad. Outlaw Star > Cowboy Bebop Most people who talk and meme about JoJo have never watched an episode of JoJo. 2003 FMA > Brotherhood Evangelion is not good. Solo Leveling Anime doesn't work as a japanese media form because it isn't able to portray the true hostility between Koreans and Japanese. The new animation for One Piece is all pizzazz, missing out on crucial content as well as mistelling events. Ex) Whitewashing of Usopp and other minority characters, Sanji being useless, Luffy was shown to have a hard time with Ulti when in fact he handled her easily in the manga.

Jim Clarke

Space Dandy has enjoyed waaaay too much of a redemption tour. Everybody’s gotten so hopped up on the “under appreciated, beautifully animated Watanabe gem” narrative, but man the writing and humor are still cringe to the max and 70% of the episodes are nonsensical gibberish.

Stephen J. Lunatic

Okay, I always get shit for this: I will never watch Dragon Ball because I can't stand Toriyama's character designs. It ruled out Dragon Quest for me too. 😬 I've never seen a single thing designed by Toriyama that I thought looked cool.

Scrim

Kinda pretentious, but so many shows with great stories are ruined by a modern day art style, and would have been so much better with a 80s and 90s style of art. Trigun Stampede as a specific example. It didn't even look bad in a vacuum, but compared to the 90s its not even close. Many shows considered classics would have died on the vine if they didn't have their incredibly distinct art, even if it's not generically "pretty" or "well animated."

tiredamoeba

Some anime deserve to be unpopular/"underated". Not because they're bad but because they cater to a specific audience. On the flip side, just because a show is "over hyped" doesn't automatically make it bad.

Weston Williams

I only watch anime if SungWon's voicing a character full stop

Izzy Omega

If an isekai includes a romance subplot, it's entirely a groomer fantasy. I don't care if your body is 12 if you still have the brain of a 30 year old, even if you're from another world. Gross.

Jeff Hibbert

I love Excel Saga, and was very surprised how low you ranked it on your list. Death Note is the best dub anyone's ever done, for an anime of that size.

Sadib Khan

Fanservice disqualifies anime from being great, except for being great at fanservice.

mguin

Slice-of-life anime are grossly underrated

Matthew G

My biggest hot take is that CG in anime isn't that big of a deal. People hate too much.

Milo

I prefer the English dub over sub. Mainly because I cannot stand having to read subtitles while an important scene is happening. Also some dubs are way more funny than subs, one being Haikyuu.

Scrim

To sum up in a pithy one liner, modern anime is more focused on looking good than looking unique.

noahlz

Attack on Titan is basically Neon Genesis Evangelion

Truthy

Kikyo is good, actually. What a great character. Too much hate towards her!! Edit to add another take: FMA 2003 isn't as bad as people say it is. I love Brotherhood more, but I like FMA 2003 a lot, and specifically Lust is way more interesting in FMA 2003. And naturally, I can't for the life of me find anywhere to rewatch it 😔

Caiden

Dragon Ball Z Kai is better overall than Dragon Ball Z

Truthy

Huge!! They took all the character out of the art style for Stampede and slimmed everyone down. What a bummer.

Milo

You can have whatever opinion you want on it as well, this is just my preference

Ash

It is ok if you're turned off by a "great" show due to fan service or subjects that it tackles. My example is Dragon Maid and the way they treat that baby dragon makes me feel very uncomfy

Timmonday

Ha, I came here to express the opposite opinion xD I vastly prefer subs because reading the subtitles (and comparing them to what I think the Japanese is saying) is the only way I can stay engaged with an Anime. Otherwise it kind feels like any other show and I'd rather be doing something else.

Zexus 4

A pathetic Harem Protagonist is fucking stupid

Matthew Waldinger

Buddy Daddies is a better version of SpyxFamily. Stakes feel real without sacrificing the cute and funny tone, there’s greater character growth/development and the narrative progresses at a good natural pace where SxF tends to drag for the sake of maintaining the premise. (I love spy family btw, just love Buddy Daddies more)

MH

Haruhi Suzumiya as a character is annoying as fuck. The English Dub of Cromartie High School is funnier than the original. Shojo anime is the Secret Good Isekai. The Sailor Moon anime is more entertaining than the manga if only because Takeuchi kills off her villains right away while the Monster of the Day format let the anime flesh them out and have fun with them. "Filler episodes" are perfectly fine because they give a show space to rest and explore character dynamics and personalities

Souler Flaire

I genuinely do not understand the hype around the Umamusume anime. I tried watching it and found the story to be fairly average, and I was not wowed by the racing action sequences. It's not bad by any means, I just don't get what people love about it.

Shield Anvil Itkovian

Hayao Miyazaki was unironically correct when he said that anime was a mistake

Jason Li

Both jjk and demon slayer would have been mid at best but the anime made them popular solely because of animation quality.

connie

5cm/s was better than Your Name

Jabroni MilkSteak

Agreed. I don’t get the hype. Just good animation that’s all that going for it

Lee HW

Pluto anime was really good, I have no idea why more people haven't watched it

Jason Anderson

Isekai would be better if the story has elements of fantasy, e.g. magic is known by few people, parties of adventurers form due to happenstance, the characters don't know anything about "levels".

Caiden

Dragon Ball GT is better overall than Dragon Ball Super, but Super has some great moments.

Caiden

Huh...So that's why I didn't feel that interested in One Piece.

Caiden

Some protagonists feel like Larry Butz but arguably slightly better.

Ironwolf

My hottest anime takes: - Attack on Titan was overrated as hell. - Harem anime can be fine as long as all the characters are consenting adults and there is an actual plot. - Subs are not better than dubs, and vice versa, what matters is the quality of the show itself. - The original Ruroni Kenshin show is still one of the best anime of all time, even if the original mangaka is a disgusting pervert. Steve's gonna crucify me for this last one... 😮‍💨 - The art and animation style for One Piece is weird and off-putting, and to such an extent that despite everyone saying "One Piece is one of the greatest anime of all time!" I just can't get into it. I believe the anime/manga is a quality product. I just can't stand the way it looks.

Ironwolf

Not even Chrono Trigger?

Ivan

I think FMA 2003 is better than Brotherhood even though it's not true to the manga. There was just a bigger emotional impact because it took its time and showed the lasting emotional scars. Like the death of you know who and everything with Nina.

Ivan

Older "retro" anime often looks so charming compared to a lot of newer styles.

Bran Garbaj

I think my hottest take is I actively dislike Spirited Away and don't understand why it's such a beloved film (granted I've only seen it once, perhaps I'd find more to appreciate on a rewatch)

Stephen J. Lunatic

Not the official art. I like the game, but the art does nothing for me lol.

Dan Koss

Kiki's Delivery Service's ENGLISH opening credits song is better than the original Japanese.

Johnny 5

I had the same reaction. My friends were trying to get me into anime for years, and I never liked any of it. Then Spirited Away came oat and they were like no THIS is the one. I thought it was pretty mediocre. I love all other Miyazaki though.

Johnny 5

I think there should be a series where decent people slaughter right wingers en masse. One big campaign to rid the world of tyranny once and for all. Bloody and satisfying.

Bran Garbaj

Yeah I love Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving Castle was enjoyable, it's just Spirited I have a problem with. I think it's largely due to the lack of structure

Ben

100+ episode anime just aren't worth it, no matter how good they are. They take too long to finish, and you can watch so many shorter anime in that time.

Anna

Violet Evergarden's Movie ending was trash, and completely undid all the work the Anime did to make the main character awesome.

shoyutamago

I don't like how quite a few series nowadays are making their series into movies as opposed to making regular episodes/seasons like they usually do. Although, I can see why they do it bc it's a good way for studios to give themselves more time in between release dates AND make more money... but I still don't like it LOLOL

Tess

K-On!!'s second season is much more thematically rich than people give it credit for. Its all about the struggle of watching people move on without you and leaving those you love behind. Also Azusa is the main character.

Spectrum

Sword Art Online isn't nearly as bad as people say, it was just the in thing to dunk on it. Solo Leveling is worse than people say but only because people haven't gotten to the end of the first series yet.

Suulix

Bleach is kinda just meh, I dont get why people love it so much. I havent been able to watch past the hueco mundo arc in all fairness but I digress

Suulix

Relatable reaction, I feel the same

ASpot

Frieren is the least interesting character in her story and I would rather the story follow any of the other characters.

Sasa

jinshi is pretty creepy in apothecary diaries and i think it's more about the female friendships than it is a romance. i also think it'd do better as a yuri series. i also learned that eunuchs in imperial china were actually a third gender and we only think of them as castrated men because that's what the global north did to their eunuchs and the western lexicon has been spread everywhere due to imperialism and colonization #TheMoreYouKnow.

Bex

Neon Genesis Evangelion. One of my friends is insistent that "Shinji is a nepo baby. Asuka should have been the star."

EvilKittie

Magical Girl Knight Rayearth and Fushigi Yugi were an example of isekai done right. Before isekai became just villainesses in web novels and worlds with rpg mechanics.

enchantedsleeper

I admit, I was a bit underwhelmed the first time I watched it, although the visuals are of course gorgeous. Whereas with Totoro when I watched it I DID get the hype. (Perhaps not to the level of omnipresence that it's got to, but I loved it).

Chris

The big battles at the end of One Piece arcs are boring.

Jathby Dredas

Localized dubbing is best, but subtitles should stick closer to the original meaning.

Mel

Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki movies generally aren't interesting or entertaining. Edit: Castle of Cagliostro gets a pass due to being Lupin III.

Dawson DeMars

Maybe not a hot take. Shonen isn’t a good entry point to anime but it’s all people suggest. Go on your own journey. The anime that got me into anime was Birdie Wing because I like golf and saw there was a golf anime that existed. Just find something you think looks interesting and start there.

Bran Garbaj

Yeah I don't really like how obsessed he is with her especially given the power dynamic and her initial disdain for him, the romance is definitely the weakest part I much prefer the cute girls and mystery solving (and the familial bonds)

Bran Garbaj

Part of me understands this, but your wording makes me question it. "No matter how good it is"? Are you watching anime to enjoy a well crafted story or just to have seen as many of them as possible? I personally think it doesn't matter how long it is if you enjoy the characters and the plot

Fluorite

Cowboy Bebop is overrated, likely due to nostalgia. The dub quality is top-tier and the music is fantastic, but the plot for 80% of the episodes ranges from non-existent to boring. Every Jet episode is a slog to get through.

Fluorite

Goblin Slayer is an underappreciated gem because of its controversial first episode. Beyond the first episode is one of the best examples of a truly unpowered-but-capable protagonist. The Goblin Slayer never gains any abilities, magic, or super equipment; he's just cunning and obsessive. Season 1 is a perfect mix of melancholy, horror, action, and humor with a surprisingly heartwarming ending, despite all of the adult themes.

Jonathan Nguyen

Japanese scripts in anime are bland and limited! Characters speak in overly polite mannerisms! Zero crudeness or vulgarity! American Dub producers are creative enough to use the English language to make anime dialogue silly, intense, crude, vulgar, and offensive! Making it sound more unique and less restricted compared to the original japanese!

Izer

Western anime fans are wildly outdated as far as what they they consider as "anime" and doesn't hold up to scrutiny, esp when applying that lens to other cultural media like genres of music or film.

Caiden

My Neighbor Totoro is overrated in my opinion. It felt like a series of plotlines that lacked an overarching structure or end goal to tie them together, like someone kept changing their mind and couldn't stick to one. Also, the ending felt like a poorly handled resolution. Going based on what I remember of the english dub from years ago.

Sage

Twelve Kingdoms and Escaflowne too

Sage

Trigun Stampede > OG Trigun anime. The character designs alone are 1000% better.

Jonathan Nguyen

The Gurren Lagann franchise wasted its potential by ending with Simon’s story! Ignoring the flaws in the actual writing quality of the anime aside, the franchise could’ve done so much more with the rest of the cast of interesting characters and world-building once Simon is out of the way! We could’ve gotten a Yoko spinoff, or a Viral spinoff, or a Gimmy and Darry spinoff! But no, the Gurren Lagann franchise lives and dies with Simon!

VictarisGX

I don't know how hot of a take this is, but I think anime dubs are the best way to watch. If I wanted to read my anime I'd pick up the manga. Side note: you and your castmates in Knights of Guinevere were excellent! I didn't have you voicing a dystopian Walt Disney on my animation bingo card, but you nailed it.

Tali

The comment section has made me realise that studio Ghibli films are actually underrated lol

Yon Habtemichael

1. Sexy fanart of Yor Forger has formed an image of a character in the Spy x Family fandom that incongruous with the real Yor (awkward woman who can't handle kissing a man without getting drunk) 2. Blue Lock Season 2 had worse animation than Adult Swim's Uzumaki, but post-production effects hid the flaws a little better. 3. Production I.G. has lost its prestige by churning out anime for Western franchises or bad Adult Swim Original series for years.

Battler Ushiromiya

There is a place for *that* kind of fanservice, if done for the right audiences in the right show with the right characters. I feel like anime fans as a whole being so openly disgusted by the wrong kind of it has led to there being none at all in recent mainstream show, even of the tasteful kind.

JY

Death Note is garbage. All my friends watched and loved the anime when it was airing, so I knew a lot of the plot by proxy, and I even cosplayed as L during the peak of its popularity. But I just never got around to watching it until now. And I've gotta say -- I cannot even begin to understand HOW it is tauted as the gold standard for so many people. The characters are flat caricatures and unrelatable. Light's "brilliant" solves and "achievements" felt unrealistic and unearned, with "problems" blatantly set up for him to solve it. Misa is annoying as hell and especially disappointing given her potential. L was starting to grow on me until *mumbled spoilers* that one point in the plot. The L wannabes were dull and uninteresting. The overall concept is interesting, sure, but the plot really tried to forcefeed-bulldoze into your brain how amazing the story and characters without proving it.

JY

The original 1999 Digimon Adventures is one of the best stories out there. Still holds up.

Caiden

I mean there are anime like One Piece to be fair. I can respect people liking it as it does seem good, but that's a LOOOOOT of episodes.😅I guess density of greatness is important and filler when appropriate but with good pacing. And preferably not being a huge commitment (e.g. 200+ 30 minute episodes).

Colin Lacey

animated food is not appealing or appetizing at all and it's annoying when anime or games put emphasis on really detailed food or cooking

AsinineJ

Hikaru No go is an elite sports anime.
