Lupin The 3rd is one of the most underrated anime series of all time

Lush✌️

Samurai Champloo is carried by its soundtrack. The story and characters are very unmemorable.

ToughtMoff

90% of people who hate Slice of Life have only watched Shonen. Like at least try it before you judge.

Lithia

Demon slayer's writing is actually really good for the majority of it, the ending may be underwhelming, but I think it has a really strong cast of characters. It is more than just pretty animation and good fights, it's a little cheesy sometimes, but in a good way imho.

Blake hutcheson

I feel Yu Yu Hakasho gets overlooked in the current anime discourse.

Jamie Robinson

People that hate on all anime and assume they are the same because they saw fan service is really dumb logic. They treat the word anime like it's a genre when it isn't. It's like saying someone is a weirdo and won't watch breaking bad because they saw some weird stuff happening in game of thrones.

MOL352

Horimiya S2 sucks. Completely unmemorabke and no development of any kind (story or characters). S1 was was very good, but it seemed like the story got too far too soon, and then had to stop without anything interesting happening at all. I typically enjoy Slice of Life shows, and it wouldn't have mattered so much, but it's really jarring against a much better first season.

Pumaloaf

While the first episode of AoT is a solid 10/10 beginning, it's all downhill from there

Tess

Miyazaki isnt in a league of his own when it comes to being a great anime director. He is great, but others like Satoshi Kon, Naoko Yamada, Masaaki Yuasa, and more deserve way more recognition for their achievements. Even if anyone thinks Miyazaki is the best at the end of the day, it not being a conversation is detrimental.

Niall

The 4kids dub of Pokémon is the best way of watching the early series, and if they had stuck to dubbing series that were already for their target demographic, they wouldn't have gained their bad reputation.

RotoscopedDandy

Great dubs and translations can offer just as "authentic" of an experience as subs, since you're able to focus on the entire screen instead of splitting time between watching the visuals and reading subs. Anime isn't created with the intent of the viewer constantly reading subtitles.

Agent E

Not technically an anime take, but I believe English translated Manga would be more enjoyable if all of the pages are mirrored. The speech bubbles and panel layout are intended to be read right to left. Since English is read left to right, it makes reading Manga very disorienting.

Oscar

I think anyone who enjoys anime like Gundam or the Fate series have no right to complain about One Piece being "too long" to get into. Spoken as a Gundam fan and a new One Piece fan

Toaster_inc

Toriyama sometimes overshoots and makes Goku look like an asshole, not just naïve, and the Funimation approach accidentally kinda fixed that. It's not a perfect fix, but it was better than Dragon Ball Super Goku being written as if he doesn't have a brain at all.

Brian

Watching One Piece to catch up when you're seasons behind is a much better experience than watching weekly. Many individual episodes accomplish nothing narratively and often just rehash something that was covered a few weeks prior. This makes viewing feel unrewarding especially when you've just watched a few weeks of episodes of very little movement and then there's a "Special Chopper Catchup episode" . Watching from the backlog fixes this since the episodes where nothing happens quickly move to the episodes where things do instead of having to wait a week or more to get there.

Jeff Hibbert

Iria: Zeiram the Animation is the GOAT.

Lulu Hawthorne

I bounced incredibly hard off Samurai Champloo. I felt it expected the viewer to accept that the three main characters were becoming friends and important to each other, but it never did anything to make me believe in that relationship when they didn't even really talk to each other more than shallow conversations until episode 24 of 26. It was dissonant tonally, bouncing from comedy to seriousness so abruptly that I couldn't enjoy either end of the spectrum.

ThreeScoops

A lot of anime and manga, but shonen in particular, have too many characters. Instead of using established side characters or ones from previous arcs that the audience is familiar with, many shows often introduce new characters that we never see again.

IpN

Demon Slayer is solely carried by animation, and the characters barely had development (if any). Also, even though Chainsaw Man has good art, it does not have good story writing (killing off characters randomly, and also bringing them back suddenly just to "subvert expectations" is not good writing)

knife dad

UmaMusume lore would be improved by Omegaverse rules

Audrey

People that sit through the entirety of Fruits Basket and call Tohru Honda a doormat that has no development, miss the entire point to her character and the underlying themes of the entire story.

Björn Thulin

There is so much garbage and mediocre anime, is *barely* worth the effort of finding good ones.

Keanu

I'd rather have filler movies than canon movie that try to cram in >10 chapters of material.

Soggy

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is a better show than Brotherhood. I don't care that it diverged from the manga, I think it maintains a smaller but better cast of supporting characters (particularly Winry and Mustang) and I think Scar's story is more interesting. Additionally I think the Homonculi are better as products of man's hubris and leveraged by an egotistic alchemist rather than aspects of a broody eldritch monster. And I think the movie is neat.

Especially Interested

Fma is the greatest war story of all time, bar none. (Both brotherhood and the og are included in this cuz I think they're both equal)

Tali

I think Deathnote doesn't get enough credit for getting a whole generation of people into anime who may not have been exposed to it.

GreatZelos

The decision to shorten the first few arcs of FMA Brotherhood into 12 episodes actively damages the show and robs the impact of some of the story’s most emotional moments for the sake of time. People are better off just reading the manga in nearly every way.

Yon Habtemichael

Angry fans should direct their hatred to production committees, instead of animators and directors. The money people set the budget and timeline constraints

sapph

if an anime is lucky enough to get a movie (or more than one) I don’t think it’s fair to complain about skipped content in the movie as opposed to having a movie at all (re: kaguya movie)

Lyza

This is more of a silly story than a hot take -- I was anime-curious in high school but was too shy to try to watch any and a bit intimidated by the anime club LOL. It took me years later to finally realize that Pokémon, Dragonball, Sailor Moon, etc. were anime shows and I'd already been watching anime my whole life! 😅 I guess the hot take from this would be that anime and western cartoons might have more in common than people realize! They were indistinguishable to me for the longest time.

Conor Holt

If the anime’s opening & ending changes, it’s a new season. Therefore, Frieren starts season 3 in January, not season 2

Kyle M

A great anime opening is a combination of good visuals and music and not just good music. Good music alone is just a good song and not a good anime opening

Mitch Graham

Evangelion is a mediocre gundam ripoff and does extremely little new - it's just an early adopter of lore as content and was more available to western audiences.

kitkait

The shoujo anime mainstream revival needs to happen already; shounen is great and all but let stories with the energy of ouran high school host club pop off 🙏

Paisios Hensersky

Columbo needs his own anime. Sought me? Watch this.

Ajz0626

Gatekeeping Sub v Dub hurts the chances to grow the community and often ignores people with disabilities. For me, I don't watch subbed anime because the subtitles go too fast for me and my dyslexia

Nick

My hot take is: We're never actually going to see the ending of One Piece. One Piece has become such an insane cash cow that can actually keep running forever and will always be popular. You know that "till you're 90" meme? Yeah that's Oda with One Piece. He is never going to stop writing it until the day he dies and we're gonna be left with an unfinished manga. I know a lot of people say "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey" but if the journey doesn't reach the destination then we just go home feeling sad we never got to where we were going. If I don't get to see these characters achieve their dream they've been yapping about for over 20 years then that's just disappointing. Also no matter what the One Piece is it can never live up to the expectations. But that's another take I guess.

Jonathan Nguyen

Chibi is not cute. Chibi versions of characters act like over-the-top and flanderized versions of the original.

Gentleman Gamer

Maybe this is more of a lukewarm take, I'm not sure, but I usually would rather wait until the anime's done to watch it rather than watch it weekly. At the start of any given anime season, unless I've read the source material, it's a little overwhelming trying to decide which of the dozens of new shows are worth watching. And even if I CAN decide what to watch... if it's more than a few shows, I personally find it hard to keep up with several different stories when I'm only getting those bite-sized pieces from week to week. I might occasionally watch a cute slice of life week to week here or there. Otherwise though? Waiting until after a season of anime is done is better for me: I can get more complete opinions on a show from others, and more easily determine my own opinion on it when there's not so much hype or buzz in the air.

Nico

I don't care when older dubs make big changes to the script as long as the performances are good. We don't live in a world anymore where access to the original material is limited (unless your a Macross fan)

Matthew Ely

I love Hajime no Ippo for many things. I find it super rewatchable. But the regular interjections of homophobia, sexual harassment, and cringey horniness make it tough to recommend to lots of folks who I think would otherwise enjoy the show.

Caiden

Anime is largely a superior medium to manga. It has movement, sound (including music, voices, and sound effects), acting, and color whereas manga doesn't (and typically doesn't have color). The only advantage manga, as a medium (not industry practices or production considerations), has is reader-controlled pacing.

duckey

oshi no ko was never good. it doesnt actually explore "the dark side of the entertainment industry" in any meaningful or thoughtful way. plus the characters are all bland tired tropes... and the "romance" between aqua and ruby. yuck

Russell House

Most love stories in anime are paced too slow. I understand it's fun to watch relationships bud over time, but I want more screen time with the characters as a couple than just the epilogue. Give me at least half a season where they are dating

Zayn Ryzen

Gurren Lagann is a deceptively brilliant. Where people praise Neon Genesis Evangellion or Attack on Titan for having a in depth narrative, the same people will scoff at Gurren Lagann and call it JUST a Super Robot show. Now, it IS a Super Robot show, but it works with themes of religion, faith, humanity's role in the cosmos. What it doesn't do that those shows always fall into, is succumb to the negativity the topics and wallow in it. However, Gurren Lagann finds a positive outlook on them. That we can't bring the dead back, because it will prevent space for new life to grow and progress or that by doing nothing may prevent tragedy, it also prevents any point of existence. It is a goofy Super Robot show, but that isn't ALL that it is.

Ironwolf

I have no new ones, so I suppose I'll reiterate my previous thoughts: "- Attack on Titan was overrated as hell. - Harem anime can be fine, just as long as all the characters are consenting adults and there is an actual plot... - Subs are not better than dubs, and vice versa, what matters is the production quality of the show itself. Voice acting included. - The original Ruroni Kenshin show is still one of the best anime of all time, even if the original mangaka is a disgusting pervert. Steve's gonna crucify me for this last one... 😮‍💨 - The art and animation style for One Piece is weird and off-putting, and to such an extent that despite everyone saying "One Piece is one of the greatest anime of all time!" I just can't get into it. I believe the anime/manga is a quality product. I just can't stand the way it looks. Sorry."

Teuchi77

Battle Shonen authors need to stop introducing romance if they don't want to write romance. So many modern battle shonen set up some kind of potential love interest, only to just never commit to it. The author's excuse is always 'oh this isn't a romance' or 'oh I don't want it to be all people talk about'. Okay. Then just... don't? Why bother setting up a love interest and all that crap when you're gonna shove them together in a poorly paced chapter or offscreen at the end of the show?

bxtcher

the Chimera Ant arc is too long. love the anime though

Karri S

Although the quality of One Piece animation has been better overall since the start of Wano, important action scenes are often incomprehensible low-framerate dogshit. The Gear 5 reveal being this at its worst. (Egghead has been a lot better though, especially lately)

MH

The Boy and The Heron isn't Miyazaki's best work. While I admire that he's just doing his art how he wants, the pacing is all over. Using contemporary slang isn't an invalid choice when translating/localizing anime. The only real problem is that it puts a time stamp on it.

Jathby Dredas

Names do not need to be localized, especially if they can't capture a pun from the original name.

GreatNate

I think having average anime is still a good thing. Obviously it would be great if EVERYTHING was a banger, but from a practical standpoint, the time and cost would be impossible. I think you need all the middling anime to be made to keep jobs and interests in the field, for better tools and techniques to be made, and for potential future talent to cut their teeth. Thanks to that, the anime industry overall continues to improve.

Luke H.

The chimaera arc of Hunter x Hunter was the worst arc in the entire anime. Made me almost stop watching

Will Harvey

I think hand drawn in-between frames (between key frames) are going to become a thing of the past for most anime. A lot of studios like Science Saru are able to use digital tooling (I think basically Flash?) to do interpolation and it seems they're able to make successful shows like DanDaDan on a much quicker pace. I worry about the effect that'll have on junior artists trying to break into animation, but further digitizing seems inevitable at this point, especially with newer compositing tricks by higher budget shows

Helli

Idk how hot this take is, but the popularity of many/most gay ships in shonen isn't an indication of a larger queer fanbase or the author writing interesting but ambiguous relationships between his male characters, but because most female characters in shonen are either so bland, so badly written or so obviously fanservice that fans don't even consider them to be full characters, much less potential romantic partners for their faves.

J H

My hot take is that I don't watch anime. Fight me. I also just subbed due to youtube bullshittery. I could see in your face that you are so done with this shit. I hope my meagre contribution towards your continued creative efforts offers a morsel of respite.

Istari1000

Goku could beat Pikachu or something idk I don't watch anime that's for weebs

Raven Amos

The Lensman anime from the 1980s was good, actually, and the E.E. "Doc" Smith estate should have given it another chance

Chandberg

I don't like how anime is going to seasonal. I really enjoy the weekly episodes from older shounen. Even if they are filler, it gave me something to watch about the characters that I like. I understand why people like seasonal more but I would rather have something every week than having to wait potentially years.

purplealchemist

Streaming services ruin a good anime series by dragging out the plot. Back when the only way to watch a series was on television, show runners knew they had to get viewers interested right away, or they could drop it and never find it again. Streaming makes it very easy to find a show you like and keep up with it, but it usually takes more than three episodes to get a plot off the ground. I think watching the first episode of a series and getting the feeling of "oh, so this is where the show is going" is a wonderful tactic, vs having no clue how long it will take before you feel hooked. I know a lot of anime viewers are very patient, but I think this is a stupid move for business.

Ward

The only humor in Konosuba is characters yelling. "People yelling = The Joke" is a plague in modern anime.

Bone

I think anime should not be judged by a first episode. I give an anime at least 3 episodes to pull me in if i am interested in the concept and consider watching it. There have been so many shows that the first episode is either not good or terrible, but the rest of the anime is amazing, or vice versa, the first episode is great and the rest is terrible.

Sommernacht

Ryouran! Victory Road (Nijigasaki) is by far the best Love Live song of all. It's crazy how they made a super danceable EDM track that really highlights each character of the group like no other song. The instrumental alone slaps so hard I thought it was a fanmade song at first. I know songs like Snow Halation are super popular, but that's like the white bread for me personally.

E H

The “Made in Abyss” anime adaption is better than the manga, and the Prince of Tennis English dub is basically ruined because they used an adult male voice for a 12 year old.

Masterdramon

You've spoken previously (and correctly) that anime OPs are an underappreciated art form in their own right, but the same goes doubly for anime EDs. Rarely do they get featured in Top 10s or actively discussed, but precisely because they don't have the burden of needing to "sell" a show with great bombast or high-action spectacle, they're a medium where some of the most deeply creative work in the industry's history has been realized. Think about Mob Psycho 100 ED1, painstakingly animated through painted glass, or FLCL's "Ride on Shooting Star," smoothly transitioning between the journeys of an animated and choppy live-action Vespa with the same inimitable humor of the series. EDs deserve a lot more recognition from the anime fandom and artistic community at large.
