here's a new perk for the $5 tier, once a month, my wife and I are both choosing movies neither of us have seen and afterwards we discuss our full thoughts. Keep in mind these will have FULL SPOILERS for the films, so if you don't want to be spoiled, watch the movies in advance.

For convenience sake, I will timestamp when the second movie's discussion starts in case you want to skip the first movie's. This episode starts with Rise of Skywalker, we start discussing One Battle After Another at 29:20.

Ooo, this sounds like fun. I'll have to make some time to suffer through the new Star Wars movies for this

"Art without value" is the best way to describe slop like this movie

Pretty good insight into One Battle After Another. It gets praise for its politics, but it's pretty watered down to be palatable for general audiences. Still a fun thriller though. And your Rise of Skywalker segment was great lmao.

I remember seeing rise of skywalker in theaters with my family and all I remembered from it was saying "eww" out loud at the same time someone in the row behind me said "aww" at the kiss scene

Lush✌️

love this segment :)

Love the idea of you and your wife doing double feature reviews—really fun concept for a series. I actually curate a list of thematic double feature pairings on Letterboxd, "Matt’s Double Features". If you ever want a built-in pairing to review as a duo, feel free to pull from it. Excited to see more episodes! https://boxd.it/T6KC4

there were soooooo many ways they could have closed rey's chapter (in the mainline movies) and they chose THAT. literally it was just...soooo bad. ALSO my fave characters (finn and rose) were basically nonexistent in this movie. WHY would they have characters with some of the most compelling backstories—a black ex-trooper who defected to the resistance and a vietnamese resistance engineer who's hated the empire since birth...like???? WHAT A FUMBLE!!!! i don't mind finn/poe but damn...this movie was a big NOTHINGBURGER. also i blame this entry for spawning all of the reylo fanfic turned tradpubbed books flooding the romance/fantasy bookish scene right now 😠

There's a bit at the beginning where the evil white guys ask Lockjaw if he's willing to "submit himself to the process" or some such, and I think the idea was supposed to be that, in order to maintain their secrecy, the vetting process ends only in membership or being killed.

53:05 I would say calling it safe is a bit too far over the line; iirc they were attacking (with guns) and bombing various locations; the most prominent in my memory being the detention center that seemed like a pretty clear allegory for something like an Ice center. I don't think we can say it's safe to be depicting people running up those places with guns and freeing the people within. edit: oh and while I agree with y'all about.. there being a larger problem that goes unaddressed, but I wonder if it does have a point about the connections to the military. I'd bet that's closer to spot on than people tend to talk about.
