The Yukina rescue arc is one of the weaker ones narratively speaking from season 1, imo, it's mostly just setup for the tournament. The Miyuki stuff, as you mentioned, is like halfway or so to a progressive idea, and it even has two perspectives (Yusuke's and Kuwabara's) dueling over it a little (which I give a lot of credit, actually; not every piece of media in ANY era is gonna get every issue right, but the act of showing more than one perspective, even if both are misguided, at least conveys that the topic is worthy of thought), but of course it doesn't quite get there and it isn't helped by her being in the Jobber Trio. I'm curious how you'll like the tournament. Between this and Dragonball, it came in an era where the concept of a martial arts tournament was not quite *completely* overdone yet, but we viewers cannot live in that past. You don't seem to like brief, one-off villains so it may be a bumpy road for you, but it has some standouts that I hope will elevate the experience.

This moment with Miyuki and also in the manga is the one part of the story that makes me cringe, but fortunately it's not something that happens again. Years ago, I was watching this episode with some trans friends and I had completely forgotten about Miyuki. When the fight began, it was like my spidey senses started tingling. I knew something unpleasant was about to happen!

I’d say the fun of the dark tournament arc is the character development across the cast along the way. The fights aren’t really the important part but the emotions and circumstances that surround them. I think there will be some villains you will enjoy throughout the arc hopefully.
