Happy Friday, folks! This week's updates are a real back-and-forth, so strap in.

Last week, I lost my neighbor unexpectedly.

I realized during this time that I've arranged all of my rooms so that I'm facing southeast, like a lucky houseplant. It felt so surreal to know that my friend was dying in the house next door, to the northwest. It felt rude not to be facing her.

I'm grateful to a friend for reminding me that Hospice doesn't necessarily mean one or two days. I wouldn't have known otherwise.

But we'll get back to this in a moment.

This is how I feel every time I walk back from Community Garden Market after they restock their produce on Tuesdays.

Most people don't realize how close to DC we live here in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Though it's still far enough that it's a Special Occasion when we go.

This one doesn't have a punchline, just an observation...

We're close, but we're far enough away that it still feels surreal to see what we see on the news right in front of our eyes. The two National Guard members who were shot in DC last year were both from West Virginia; our state offered to send our Guard to the District last summer, and apparently they're still there.

Here's Quetza with a palate cleanser for ya. Much like a cat, he loves boxes, but a very different kind of boxes.

He's not wrong about Boring Box.

Here's the original art!

Now that her obituary has been released, I feel it's okay to talk about my neighbor more openly.

I know Cathy will be an inspiration to me in my older years. She was incredible. And SO thoughtful, as evidenced by this voicemail. :.)

And yes, she was 89, so perhaps you think the loss being "unexpected" was naive of me. I really thought she'd just live forever. I don't know, maybe she still does, just somewhere else now. Mowing someone else's lawn.

Unrelated:

Literally EVERY ONION. Does anyone else's annoying loud panther-clawed cat do this to them?? (I still love him, but JFC, Pip.)

To those of you in the crosshairs of the incoming winter storm, I hope you stay safe and warm and find a good hill to sled down, or some good hot cocoa to enjoy indoors! Our county is having this big thing called Frosty Fest, so if you're in the area this weekend before it snows (or after, but within safe walking distance), check out that link for a loooooong list of kids' craft events, special drink offerings, and a LOT of hot cocoa throughout the panhandle.

Stay cozy out there!

Sorry about the death of your neighbor. We forget that people die, eventually. it is always hard. And on another note, yes, my cat thinks everything is for him, even if it is onions, dang it. Let me smell it so *I* know.

GaDoneit! Sorry for the weird word! That story about your friend in Hospice really got to me! Then I read the lawnmowing story and I cried a little. My mom would mow as a point of pride, despite her dementia. However, when it came for to stop, she hired a sweet woman to mow. That mowing lady even did a few handiwork chores for her! Thank you for helping to remember this! Stay warm!

Had more than one friend go through hospice, and yeah, it can be anything from 48 hours to a couple of weeks. Hospice people are so good, though. And our kitty doesn't beg like that, but he does act interested... until I wave my oniony fingers in front of his nose and he rears up theatrically and goes away. Most amusing.

The comics about Cathy are so sweet and touching! ❤️

My dad was in hospice care for literally years - so long that they gave him the boot to free up the space for sicker folks. He's the rare person who gets better in there, it turned out. He passed several years later, but time away from hospitals and the harser aspects of chemo let his body heal, I suspect. The cancer didn't go away, of course, but he wasn't so sick. And my cat doesn't inspect onions, but she gets QUITE upset if I go to the bathroom and don't let her check the room for Threats. She just wants to come in and look around, get maybe 1-2 pets, and then leaves. And then comes back a few minutes later if I'm taking longer than she's decided is allowed. I should mention that literally nothing bad has ever happened in the bathroom, so she's just making this all up.

My mom's dad was in hospice for less than a couple days (we were told he could have up to a week once they stopped daily dialysis treatments). Mom and her siblings and her mother we're fortunate enough to be there with him when he passed. I was really shocked it was so much quicker than the "up to a week" estimate we were given, but I am glad he was given the comfort of dying with loved ones at his own home. Also, my black panther cat doesn't claw me like that, but my cow-colored cat does, especially when he thinks what I'm doing in the kitchen should pertain to him. Usually I just let them both sniff whatever they're curious about.

That's Pip, bringing his Senior Staff Feline energy. "This isn't an onion until and unless I verify the woman's claim that that it's an onion and not something I want ." QUESTION AUTHORITY

Becki Brothers

Penelope (my cow panther/gremlin)does it ALL THE TIME. Peeling an orange? MEH MEH MEH (That's what she sounds like), so I give her a sniff and she gets offended. Merlin (my void gremlin) does as well.

Went out to pick up some wood for our wood stove just in case we lose power here in Kentucky. And yes, my cats are always asking to inspect whatever I'm doing, be it a craft or cooking. My older boy, George Michael (about 9 yrs old), is usually polite about it unless it's chicken (then he'll reach his paws up to the counter or even hop up). Our new addition, Hammerbarn (about 9 months old), will stretch up my leg and dig his claws in while yowling at me.

Amy Crook

We'll be stocking up before it's meant to hit, that's for sure. It'll just be a few days but it feels like snowmageddon every time now! Also, my cats agree with Q about the boring box, Pod will put his face between phone and eyes in order to disrupt boring box time lol.

The comics about your neighbour are very sweet. (Tomorrow the weather in Quebec is supposed to be the coldest ON THE PLANET somehow, so please think of me while I think of you in the storm.)

John Boreczky

Sorry about your neighbor. Thank you for the onion comic - I will continue to enjoy it even if it hits too close to home. Comics about pain and love always touch me.

Douglas Appelt

Ah, onions! I luv 'em! Your comic somehow triggered an ancient memory of a 1966 song by Susan Christie: 🎵 Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Ooh, I love onions. 🎵 And then later in the song is this spoken bit I've always loved: "The onion is a tuberous vegetable and is a member of the genus: Stinkus Delicioso. It was highly prized by the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, and their friends and cousins-a. They cause watering of the eyes and rubifaction of the skin, but it is very, very tasty."

Tim Pendergast

Captain Kangaroo did a bit with that song with frog puppets singing.

dcorsetto

I'm sorry but that seems ILLEGAL!!?! I'm thinking of you right now, and hoping you don't have to leave the house for DAYS!!

dcorsetto

Oh I'm so glad you got that one, John!! <3

Pille

To live a life where your friend and neighbor draws in very fine and caring way about in your final days <3 Sorry for your loss.

These comics reminded me of my downstairs neighbor, older woman by herself who would ask me for help with little things. It was a blow when she passed too, my former partner and I still talk about her. your neighbor friend seemed very sweet♡

Michael Steamweed

Yes, you must show the cat the onions for their rejection every time. 'Tis ritual.

I... I think I would start buying pre-chopped onions just to see if he is as interested in those or if it's something to do with the chopping/smells from chopping?? Pippa needs to inspect all dishes once done but is not interested in eating most people food (or... seafood/tuna/salmon oil? or.. anything but very plain chicken). We guess she's checking for poison before we eat it? Or maybe so she steal some poison & feed it to her dumb doggo brothers? When she was a kitten(-ish, about 8 months old), she got onto the counter while we were gone one day and unwrapped & consumed over half a stick of butter we had out for later baking. Pretty sure after that is when she decided human food was A Problem.

dcorsetto

Hahaha oh my god I can't handle the idea of eating that much butter, even less so with a body the size of a cat's!

BrenaMarie

I'm not far outside of DC, and I haven't been outside since last Friday because snow/ice/wheelchair user. Stay warm <3

Wow, I missed this last week! We had a little black cat who LOVED cheese. He'd beg for a handout when I was cutting some up. One evening he was being louder and more persistant while I was at the cutting board preparing nachos so I gave in and gave him what I was cutting. A hunk of jalapeno. He snapped it up. I still remember the contortions his face went through. He was much more circumspect about eating treats afterward.

dcorsetto

HAHAHAHA oh wow!! There's only one way to learn, I guess!

my cat thinks every crinkly bag belongs to her. she doesn't care what's in it, she wants the bag. she like grape bags the best especially with the little zipper on it. cats are weird as fuck yo
