Look, I'm not loosening my grip on Halloween anytime soon. Despite it being The First Week of November, this week has been The Official Week After Halloween to me. To all those who also follow a Halloween-centric calendar, I hope you're all dealing with the sudden loss of the holiday as best you can. 🪦

Luke asked me two excellent questions last week:

This was so fun. (For me, not for Pip.)

The original drawing I did for Piptza was much more cryptid-y and a little creepier than I intended, so I re-drew him for the above version! You can see he original drawing here on the listing in my shop (second slide), and whoever buys the original, you have the option to have me paste the new drawing over the old one, or just include the new drawing separately so you have both. (Remember to scroll down for your 50% off Patreon discount code before you buy it!)

Here's the version I sketched out on scrap paper at the kitchen table:

I had a jam-packed Halloween day, starting with a morning caricature gig, then preparing the house for my annual Halloween party, then giving out candy to hordes of trick-or-treaters before my own guests arrived for the party.

My favorite trick-or-treating costume was this one, but I couldn't tell what it was at first...

She was actually a full-grown adult, and the best part was that her wife was walking alongside her wearing a shirt with a picture of a piñata on it that said "I already hit that."

Here's the original art for this one!

And since it's The Week After Halloween, here's one last spooky one for ya:

Kinda mad it wasn't real. Would trade not-haunted attic for easier housecleaning, tbh.

Here's the original art for Creepy Attic comic! As always, use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for your Patreon-exclusive 50% off!

(Also, yeah, I was gonna curse myself either way by opening that tiny box. NEVER OPEN THE TINY BOX.)

Finally, as promised, here's why Danielle was crafting a pair of golden undies last week:

Ryan, Baley, and Baley's sister had already planned on a Rocky Horror theme, so I hopped onto their coattails and turned myself into the tiniest Muscleman Rocky the world has ever seen!

Dr. Frank-N-Furter did the final honors of unbandaging me near the end of the party:

Then she chased me around the house a few times.

Luke's costume included, as it often does, a paper mache masterpiece!

Inspired by the Order of Odd Fellows eye above our beloved Market House building in town:

(Photo by the Observer, and they have a bunch of cool old photos of the building here!)

A reminder that TODAY IS THE LAST DAY for preorders for the Welcome to Shepherdstown puzzle! I'll be finalizing the numbers by the end of today, so if you want one guaranteed, place your orders in the next few hours.

It's also the last day for new members to join the $2/month tier, but if you're seeing this, you're already in that tier or higher! (Daily Comics + Elephant Town for $2-$3 tiers, and Figure Drawing + process stuff if you're in the $5 tier, etc. etc.) So this message is just for your non-patron friends.

One last thing: The Daily Cartoonist invited me to share my top ten Cartoonists of Influence, so if you'd like a casual read later today, you can read it here!

That's it for now! I hope you haven't suffered any great tummyaches from eating too much candy, and may you find one cool leaf before they all turn brown (alternatively, may you see a photo of someone else's cool leaf if yours are already brown/forever green/not even in the right season for that sort of thing).

Happy Halloween!! (Bear with me, I'm in mourning.)

The Hallowe'en Reverse Candy Pathway (in which the candy giver-receiver roles are reversed) is my favorite new trope for costumes. :)

Luke looks like he should have been going around saying "Ḇ̶̨̛̓͛̋͒͌͘͝E̷̢̼̮͈͇̥̖͔͕͉͊̆ ̴͖͍̪̮̣̰͍͠N̶̡̙̗̟̬̬̪͕̓͝ͅO̵̡̮̘͔̜͙̰̪͖̹̜͉͕̘̊̏̑̔̌͋̔͂̒ͅT̵̼̲́̃̓ ̸̛̩͚̱͈̖͖̬̬́̓̈́̀̂̆̾̐͛̔̾̏͂͜͝Ả̸̳F̸̢̝͈͙͍̫͉̲̗̮͓͆̓̈́̎̅̈͊̈́̏̕R̴̪̀͗͒̓̅̏̉̓̌̒̀̀A̶̢̦̙̙͓̗͉͇̅̏̈́̋͋͌̑͠͝Ĭ̵̳̞̻͓̖́D̵̡̢̡̮͙̱͕̥̣͇̫̈̋̑̿͒̅̾̉͜"

I still haven't learned how to do that crazy shit with text and I plan on never learning because it is WAY CREEPIER when you don't know the secret sauce.

Crunchos cereal

Ha! Called it last week! Edit: Your costume!

Hugh Eckert

To paraphrase Jeph Jacques, it involves T̵̤̤͈͇̼͕̫̀͒̾̿͆͑̏̽͝͝ͅH̷͕̝̼͉͛E̴̺̫͓̫͔̲͊͘ ̴̛̭̖̘̅͌̏̃̐R̴̭̪̬͓̯̲̻̞̣̥͈̬͉̳̗͗͌̕͘I̶̜̣̹͘T̶̡̝̝̩̟̩̫̈́̑͋̄́̕͝͝Ư̷̢̳̖̞͈̹͕̥͕̔͊͐͝ͅȦ̸̲̯̦̲͓̲̈́͛̀̀̆̔̓̓L̴̞̘͓͓͙͕͖͔̑̀̋̿͛̓́͘͝

I bought a Welcome to Shepherdstown puzzle! I have friends who routinely do puzzles and then take them to their various square dance or folk dance weekends & conventions (there's always a game room and/or a table in a hallway for people to work on puzzles as they stroll by) . This will be a perfect addition to their collection!

dcorsetto

If you were the one who guessed correctly in the comments, I had to hold myself back from replying!!

dcorsetto

Aw what a cool idea to have an "as you collect yourself" activity in between dances!

William Cole

Fantastic batch of dailies! I love the piñata lady and your dream-murder-attic. And the Halloween costumes are all Elite Tier. I spent Halloween hiding in my (non-murdery) attic, watching Over the Garden Wall (lovely!), and trying, semi-successfully, to fend off an incipient cold.

dcorsetto

Aw man, that is such a sweet Halloween! I hope the cold bugs off, though!

Chip Prince

At any given time there are always people NOT dancing -- including the non-dancing spouses of attendees! (Also there's often that late-night gaming contingent who stay up and play Words Against Humanity or cribbage or whatever!) These people love options.

Luke Steichen

Yas, I called it as well on your costume. You and the rest of the group look amazing!!!!

Amy Crook

I love the cat amalgams! We did boring pirates-of-yesteryear (aka previous costumes) for this year and handed out candy! It was fun, though not enough kids came. The most popular items were the Halloween Pocky and the Easy Mac cups, which kids weirdly enthuse about. Mal would like me to pay attention to her now, though, so have a great post-Halloween! Keep those skeletons up!

Tim Pendergast

I love seeing it spelled Hallowe'en like when I was a kid!

William Cole

It kinda lingered through the weekend, but I think post-election euphoria chased it away for good!

dcorsetto

Thanks! Baley's Dr. Frank really knocked it outta the park! She even brought a blow-up life preserver to jump into at the end of the party!

dcorsetto

I love that you gave out Easy Mac cups!! Man, kids LOVE weirdo gifts for trick-or-treating, I need to remember that for next year!

Joanna

Aaah! the pinata gal brings up such sweet memories for me. I grew up in a kinda fundamentalist X-ian family and wasn't allowed to participate in Halloween until the year I was 17. (this was 1989 btw) I did the actual trick-or-treating thing that year, but was honestly already aged out. Then the next year I and a group of friends who also enjoyed the holiday came up with the idea of buying a bunch of bulk candy from the grocery store and going "Treat or Tricking" as we called it--just going up to houses (no costumes) ringing the doorbell and giving the homeowners some candy. It was a huge hit with all the folks we visited and we had a wonderful time. (and had plenty of our candy left over to enjoy later) I've heard of other folks having similar ideas since, including what I considered the best: they built a front door and carried it with them, complete with a working doorbell and a sign that said "ring doorbell" so the homeowner would open their door to see another closed front door and ring the doorbell, only to be greeted by a pair of teens dressed up as a middle-aged couple, cooing over their 'costume' and handing them candy. That was impressive!

Joanna

The Rocky Horror costumes are really incredible! I have to admit, it's been so long since I actually saw it last that I'd forgotten the character of Rocky entirely. You did a great job with him

David Neale-Lorello

I know a couple who went as a pair of piñatas, but I don't think they leveled up to "I already hit that!"

Matt Paretsky

My question is…did it take just seven days (and seven nights!) to make you a ma…a…a…an?

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Interestingly, my dreams are always about BIGGER house, often connected to a WHOLE ASS MALL via the basement!??!? and most recently, next to a church AND a fancy restaurant??? though it always makes me a little sad when I have the ones where it's our actual house but SOMEHOW there's an entire whole other unused wing where I could have CATS, segregated from my allergic spouse 😭 I also dream about VERY tall hotels (100+ stories!!!) which actually gives me vertigo even though I don't see a single window 🫪
