¿Que quieres? What do you want?

This one's for all you Spanish speakers and language lovers out there!

Berto needs a few simple nouns that someone just learning Spanish might be able to say, to finish the sentence "Yo quiero..." ("I want... ").

Apple. Dog. Beans. Hairbrush. Whatever. If you're someone who knows Spanish, suggest your favorite Spanish noun (especially if it's fun to say!).

If you're someone who doesn't know Spanish, suggest a simple noun that a new language learner might know how to say in a new language.

¡Disfrutar y gracias! (Pff I don't know if I'm using "disfrutar" right, but Google Translate claims that I am!)

----------------------------------

I drove eight hours up and back to visit friends in New Jersey this past weekend. In the last 15 minutes of my drive home, I wrote one of Berto's chapters in my head. The other 7 hours and 45 minutes were filled with total bullshit brainstuff, the intellectual equivalent of potato chips and a whole bag of Swedish Fish, but I guess I needed to get all of that stuff out before I could think about something productive. Brains, man, they only work when they want to! What're you gonna do!

Zapatos (shoes)! Doesn't work as well in context, but biblioteca (library) is an excellent one, too. Or libros (books)!

Nancy K

Breakfast

Evan DeFilippo

Arbolitos (little trees), tu corazón (your heart). My favorite Spanish noun (+adjective) to sing has got to be aves (voladoras) or "flying birds"

Rae

gato gordo (fat cat!)

Jason Dow

Chicharrones, a fried pork kind of meal snack, and the kind of regional/cultural thing the seems to get taught even if it's unusual or unlikely to be useful

Laura J Testa-Reyes

I agree with cats, but I also use, as a limited language speaker, cup, keys, and dog. Tassa, llave and perro . My partner is Cuban, and so I occasionally use simple phrases on her.

S L E E P (I recognize this would likely be an infinitive verb rather than a noun from what I remember of basic Spanish...) Otherwise: French fries!! (Papas fritas!!) Water!! (Agua!!) Help!! (Ayuda!!)

NJGR

My favorite Spanish noun is ferrocarril (because it's so much fun to say!), but it doesn't really make sense with "Quiero ____"... I'll keep thinking!

Bruce Shipman

Gatito! (Everyone wants a kitten, right?)

dcorsetto

EEEEEE I didn't know that was the actual word for kitten!! I just squealed IRL.

Marie Tracy

atún! Tuna. I hate tuna but I always thought the word was fun to say :)

Stephanie Swartz

I've only been studying Spanish for a few months, but one of the most amusing words I've come across is toe: dedo del pie (finger of the foot). So maybe he could say he wants to paint his toe nails?

Meisterj

Yo quiero café. Empanadas. necesito un cerveza (I need a beer, unless he doesn't drink). Soy consada (I'm tired, double check the gender on that). Also toss in some '¿como se dice [English word]?' If it's a more complex word or term (how do you say (word)?

Matthew Dinep

I always got a kick out of El boligrafo (the ball point pen) because it sounded to me like a German trying to make up a Spanish-sounding word.

dcorsetto

Omg "finger of the foot" is the cutest thing I've heard in awhile. I'm sure I learned that in high school, but I forgot; thanks!

dcorsetto

Oh duh, coffee would be a good one...

dcorsetto

That's the best description of that word, ha!

dcorsetto

Mantequilla is my favorite Spanish word! That, and "hablabamos."

NJGR

That's one of our nicknames for my kitty! (Well, Gatita, since she's a girl.)

NJGR

Oh! I forgot libélula (dragonfly), mariposa (butterfly, but take care with some connotations), lengua (tongue or language), el/la viejo/a (old person), or viaje (trip). I also love the word for napkin, of all things: servilleta.

Meisterj

Maybe toss in a curse word or two. They're easy to pick up from anyone, unless there's no cursing in your comic. I may not have known much Spanish as a kid but I def learned some bad words from my mom before I took a class

Cathi Andrews

I was going to suggest the word for toilet, but as a(n Australian) non-spanish speaker, google suggests too many options for me to know which would be correct. I guess you could have fun getting him to use the wrong one?

Neil Robertson

My favorite fun word is albóndigas - 'meatballs' !

dcorsetto

Oh my goodness, that's just great.

Matthew Welmers

La mantequilla de cacahuate - Peanut butter!

Erik Greenfrost

amor (love), un revolucion (a revolution!), communidad (community), un abrazo (a hug). I also concur that desayuno (breakfast), albondigas (meatballs), and mantequilla (butter) are fun. And it doesn't make sense necessarily but abuelitas (literally "little grandmothers", a term of endearment) is fun too! Especially if you confuse it for meatballs...

Keith Bass

arepas, pupusas, un perro (so you have a chance to really roll that r)

Courtney Nesom

So I don't know if he is learning for leisure, for work, or for travel, but some of the most important phrases I was always told to learn (at least when traveling) were: Where is the bathroom? How do I get to the hotel/taxi/airport/police? What time is it? So I guess Bathroom, Hotel, Taxi, Airport, Police, Time would be your nouns. And I apologize for not actually knowing the words, I took a lot of different languages in college and now they are all a jumble in my brain...

Al Plant

Oddly, I didn't get this one in my inbox. Found it when I opened the Marchuary portraits.

BrenaMarie

naranja! it means orange.
