I went digital for drawing night last night! I'm growing legs for Procreate right now (is that a saying?), and Clip Studio is the next challenge on my list. My fellow digital neanderthal Michael was, like me, equal parts impressed and disgusted by the lifelike quality of the pencil on the iPad.

It *IS* a lot easier to use a pre-sketch layer as a background to ink over than my usual go-to, where I slip a sketch under a blank sheet of paper and hope I can see through the top sheet.

If I bring the iPad to figure drawing again, you'll see a lot more of those side-by-side process images.

I'm working up a longer post that'll go more in-depth! There's A LOT going on for me right now - the end of BOO!, a fast-approaching trip... I'll tell you more about it soon!

PS, yes, her hair is ACTUALLY that long. It's usually up in bun!

These look great! I’m getting my legs for Procreate on the iPad as well. I think what I don’t enjoy is pushing plastic “pencil” on glass but definitely see a lot of potential goodness.

Thanks Fred! Hey, nice, I wanna see what you make with it! I bought this screen protector IMMEDIATELY: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GZKL8WH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The sticker directions are RIDICULOUS but just watch the video and you'll understand how to apply it! The matte finish is GREAT, totally feels like paper/vellum. I know there's a brand called Paperlike but it's apparently $30?? F that! Get this one, I stand by it (and it comes with two of them).

Fred Harper

Awesome! I heard about the protectors but nobody had actual experience. Thanks!!

I dabbled in Procreate quite a bit but it was too robust for me. Too many choices. I'm a big fan of Sketches Pro, which I got specifically for its watercolor simulation, which is eerie.

Andy Ihnatko

The iPad Pro helps me a lot as I continue to try to get the hang of figure drawing. I take advantage of layers by drawing a series of ever-tighter blobs. At first this technique just ensured that I wouldn't run out of room for feet. But it's also helping me to stay loose and not get hung up on rendering in detail.

dcorsetto

I *think* Sketches Pro is what I was using on my old iPad! I'm thinking about downloading it to use again; for all its bugs & glitches, I really like it. I actually think the graphite pencil works way better than the one(s) in Procreate, too!

dcorsetto

You're doing it right!! Tightening up the blobs is basically how you're supposed to do it. :) That's great!!

Andy Ihnatko

I wish I could send that lesson to myself way back in time! Any complete figure is considered a win.

Jesse Richards

I don't know of any glitches, but I use it because I wanted to recreate watercolor as best I could, and I read a lot of reviews and then tried a bunch of apps and this was by far the best watercolory one. But Procreate is tempting because you can save perfect personalized custom tools.

dcorsetto

Oh good, I'm glad you're not experiencing glitches! Y'know, I haven't used the watercolor tools very much in that program yet. I should give it a whirl. :)

dcorsetto

Oh totally, I love that one! I actually use Sketches for all of the text in these figure drawing updates (except today's, since I was on this Procreate kick), and I've definitely used that splattery pen! <3 (Is that your art? It's great!!)

Jesse Richards

Thanks! (The art is from a bust of Alice Freeman Palmer, in the Hall of Fame of Great Americans in the Bronx.)
