Our figure drawing session was canceled tonight, so I made up for it by joining my pal Millz in a drawing challenge this morning (okay, no, mine didn't start at 8 am... but it did last 2 hours!). Not my best work, but a GREAT warmup!

I went for my old trusty Facial Expressions: A Visual Reference for Artists, which was published sometime in the 90s CAN YOU TELL...

... and collects portraits of people from ages 20 to 90-something, photographed making different facial expressions at different angles.

A few years ago I removed the spine of my copy and three-hole punched the pages so I could keep them in a binder to keep the images flat. I've done this with a few reference books at this point and aside from the inconvenience of storing them flat (the pages will curl and bend if you store them like regular books), I can't recommend it enough!

The photos in this book aren't the highest quality and most of the actors are very clearly not actual actors (which makes a big difference; you can tell when they're smirking through a silly expression, and you need to work around that if you want the expression to look authentic), but as far as I know it's the only book of its kind out there.

(Which is to say, if you know of another book like this out there, TELL US!!)

Happy Thursday to y'all!
