Boy I've been quiet here.

Our figure drawing sessions have been canceled the last two weeks. I haven't been drawing much, but I've spent most of my time typing away at the book in my cozy studio. This comfortable brown chair and perfect-sized little table that I found in discarded in an alley must be giving me superpowers because I've been hitting my stride lately.

Or it may just be that the hardest part - starting - is over and I'm not doubting myself as much these days.

It doesn't hurt that a handful of GenCon attendees came to visit me last week at my booth (HELLO <3) and doled out some incredible encouragement to me. It helps to be reminded - by multiple people, even - that you haven't been forgotten and that there are folks out there who still really wanna read your comics.

And there's also this thing above, which is just a draft for a strip I had on my mind while I was camping on Antelope Island in Salt Lake. While I was out west in June, I was contacted by the editor of a very reputable publication and asked to submit some comic ideas for their Opinions page. They're the level of "reputable" that makes you type out "I'm sorry, did you intend to email ME?" in your reply and then delete it and act like, sure, you're worthy of that level of attention.

Anyway, I sent them two drafts as soon as I got home and haven't heard back about either in over a month, so I don't think it'll amount to anything. But it's really nice to be asked!

Since I've been so quiet here recently, I'll share a few other little things with you soon. Would you like to see the other comic draft I sent the editor? It also takes place on Antelope Island, and yet somehow stars everyone's favorite black cat. ;)

Love the comic, and the feeling of it just being you and nature. Would be very interested in the other draft, too!

Once, in a small, independent toy store, I found a kids' card game called "Cows Don't Dance...But They Like To Be Asked." I have reflected on this phrase often, ever since, as if it were a koan. I sincerely believe that this statement contains multitudes.

I like that whenever I get a notification that you've left a comment, I can't be sure if it's a sweet quick comment, or a very unexpected anecdote. ;)

Danielle, I am always awaiting any post you make and would very much like to see the other submission. Thank you for all you do.

Antelope Island is the only campsite that I would have been shamelessly disappointed to miss if I'd had to! (I had 6 campsites booked and only 2 of them didn't get rained out; glad this was one of them! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.)

Definitely would love to see the work you submitted, I love seeing your work in all its shapes and sizes. This one has a wonderful peaceful feel to it and then an adventure all in one.

Absolutely want to see the other piece. I really enjoy these quiet, peaceful moments in comic form more and more and it really suits the art style you have here. This reminds me of Mel Gillman's short bio stories, which I love. I used to have these dreams all the time where I was floating down stairs or around other places, and I'd always wake up feeling light and like I truly had those powers. It was always a let-down to swing my legs over the edge of the bed and have to feel what seemed like heavy treading to get started in the morning. -j

This is beautiful, and I have felt something akin to this before out in nature. I really love the sound effects you chose, as not only can I hear them, but they have a "feel" about them too that really pulls me into your art. (Obvs, the answer to your question is Yes)

dcorsetto

That means a lot, thanks Cathi! Sound effects are some of my favorite dumb "words" to come up with. :)

Ooh do you know where I can find Mel's short bio stories? I STILL haven't read their work after years of drooling over the artwork. When I'd dream about floating, I would always wake up midway and immediately try to force myself back to sleep, grasping for that same scene to come back... but of course I'd just end up in one of those late-for-work dreams all of a sudden instead. ;)

dcorsetto

(And thank you, both for your sweet words about this and your sweet words about your own dreams.)

They used to post more on Patreon, but haven't for a bit while they work on their book. But Mel does post on Twitter sometimes, so I quench my thirst for more As the Crow Flies with their auto-bio ones there instead (you can check out just their media posts, if you don't want to wade through everything to find the short strips). BUT I think this one of yours most reminded me of their recent cartoonist's diary here: http://www.tcj.com/tag/melanie-gillman/page/2/ (That's #1, but page 1 has the rest...well, except for #3 for some reason, but you can find it by just changing the end of the URL in the address bar from "...day-two" to "...day-three" to see that one. All the others are on the two pages from the tag.)

NJGR

OH! And of course, if you can find As the Crow Flies, I highly recommend it, even though it's not one of the auto-bio ones. I asked my workplace (academic library) and my local public library to purchase it, and people love it. I keep patiently waiting for the second volume. This short ("Pockets") is a side story to AtCF (I think it was created as a goal for the Kickstarter, if I remember correctly), and it makes me cry every single time I read it: http://www.melaniegillman.com/?page_id=775

This is a nice piece! That's about how it would go for me, too, like... "This would be an amazing shot, but not WORTH DYING OVER"
