I feel like I haven't been posting here as much as I used to, and while part of that is because I've been spending all my creative time on Elephant Town (YAY FINALLY YES GOOD), part of it is that I've been spending my EXTRA time trying to improve my town the only way I know how: with free art.

Our farmers market was quick to adapt to COVID safety measures by moving the market to a parking lot, taking orders online so people can drive through and have their orders placed in their trunk. Brilliant!! But it's tough for customers to form new habits, and I wanted to make the new process more clear (and also to keep people from driving around the parking lot like it's bumper car playtime).

I'll be helping one of the vendors update their logo next, and after that I'll probably start making visuals for our beloved coffee shop's takeout menu. Anything I make, you'll see it here!

Okay so I fibbed about ALL of my extra time being spent on town art. I spent some of the last three days frantically preparing to buy a house with Luke, which, despite my best efforts to get a callback, went into a pending sale within days of being listed, before I ever heard back from realtors.

If you, like me, salivate over pictures of cool weird houses, then here, here is my 70s dream house on the river. Light a candle for me, wear black to mourn my loss. (Luke's loss, too, but I'm the one who desperately obsessed over it and already planned where all my retro hanging lamps would go.)

All I want is to wake up to a sunrise over the river, make tea in my gaudy kitchen, sip it in  my glassed-in porch, and hop into a kayak to paddle down into town. Sigh!

In the meantime, enjoy this other bizarre house that we enjoyed looking at but is not in our price range and is also... maybe.... too weird.

13 acres for that second; Wow!

OMG that fire place and that kitchen!!! I'm so sorry for your loss! ... but also that 2nd place is perfect for comics camp party sleepover, just saying ....

Jack Arnold

Wow, oh wow. So sorry you didn't get that house of dreams. Would be a dream for me also.

Oh man, I'd cry too. That house on the river is lovely! (Also, I'm crying about housing prices where you're at. Where I am in California, prices START at half million. I'll rent forever...)

I don't think that second one is a house so much as an AirBnb that you try to describe to your friends and they don't believe you...

dcorsetto

OH yeah, that's part of the reason this place got snapped up so fast! Shepherdstown is like the uh... the Southern California of West Virginia? Our prices are still WAY cheaper than yours obviously! But people out here gawk at the $100-200k bump if a house is in town limits. Whenever I hear complaints, I think about people like you who would laugh-cry at how comparatively low our house prices are!

Captain Awesome

I actually kind of like the second place. It's definitely unique.

Hugh Eckert

That's definitely a weird place. Looks nice on the inside, though. Love the Farmer's Market map...

Weird place is weird, but kinda fun.

Oh man, house hunting can be an emotional roller coaster. I've seen almost thirty houses in the past year, we've been outbid 8 times and finally 'got lucky' because not many people turned up at a viewing because it was the start of the corona outbreak here in the Netherlands. From what I've heard the housing market is back to crazy again, now people have gotten used to corona. But we snapped up this 30s house with (probably) 70s kitchen and bathroom juuust in time. If you want to have a look at it and marvel at the beige on beige bathroom ;) --> https://www.funda.nl/koop/verkocht/utrecht/huis-41798018-adriaan-mulderstraat-17/

I am utterly in love with the fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese design elements in that second house, but only from the inside. The problem is the furniture is all wrong for the architecture. That being said, from the outside, it looks like an IKEA project that still has some assembly required.

I have a dear friend that owns a home in Utrecht. We've visited. Lovely place. Good coffee and pastries. 😁 Why does your bathroom have a door onto a balcony? Your home reminds me of my friend's with the narrow staircase and sharp angles, but also taking advantage of all of the light and outdoor space possible.

It’s a fairly classic 30s house and I’ve seen a lot of those that have a balcony that’s accessible from the bathroom. I think that’s because it used to be a bedroom, but I’m not sure. Also, our balcony is long gone, so if you’d step out there you’d have a bit of a drop into the garden :P

Imagine the size of the allen wrench you'd need.

Ahh what a very very cool place!! Congrats on the end of a very long wait. And thanks for sharing, you had me at "beige on beige." ;)

Oh. My. God. Are those cedar closets? And a sun room? ON THE WATER? I am in mourning with you right now. (And I don't even understand what the heck is going on with that second house. It looks like six half-houses built too close together!) -j

dcorsetto

Girl. There are (and I had to go back to catch this): TWO. sun rooms. Two. One is glassed in, one is screened in. I don't think this could be much closer to my dream house, unless it was within walking distance to town (to lick my wounds, Luke and I have spent the last few days talking about how much we'd have missed living right in town). Let us mourn together, bloohoohoohooooo.

NJGR

I think you just broke my heart even more on your behalf (and that of the kitties, who won't get to bask in that sun)! </3 Yes, focus on the negatives! It wasn't in town. And ... and there might've been TOO MUCH sun. Yeah! That's it! ;)

dcorsetto

I just laughed so hard at "TOO MUCH sun," signed, a human plant.

Phillip Ginn

Oh my god that house. What a house. I'm definitely going to mourn for that loss.
