**UPDATED** I'm adding a selection of the still images below, for those who aren't feeling the GIFs!

That wraps up chapter one!

I decided to make these a set of animated GIFs instead of separate pages, so if you usually read the updates in your email, you'll want to click the link to take you to the Patreon post (each "page" only loops once, so putting them in the body text would activate all of them at once which would be an unreadable mess! ). Just click on that big intro image and use the arrows to navigate. Be patient, some of them are intentionally slow!

If you wanna re-watch any image, just click its thumbnail again (or click through the gallery using the navigation arrows). Hope you like this little deviation from the norm!

What book series is this? It sounds awesome! PS I'm sorry this is 6 years late. 💜

Hugh Eckert

O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon...

NJGR

Danielle. I. Love. This. So much! ♥

E

I think it is an interesting and creative idea, I did not quite like it though....

Neil Robertson

The three images are labeled P16, P18, and P19. What happened with P17?

Sarah Manx

What a cool way to experience it. 😊

Ralph

What a fun way to make moving comics.

VirusVisal

I love the use of gifs in comics and this is awesome <3

Caleb Fujimori

I love that you experiment with new styles and formats, but this one didn't land for me. Seems like other people enjoyed it though. Is it possible to offer both formats? Looking forward to chapter 2!

Ruth Merriam

Soooooo relatable today, OMG (except for the going back to bed part, lucky her). This was an utter treat! But what did she check on outside, because surely that's the doorbell in the 3rd panel?

dcorsetto

Oh I didn't realize you could see the filenames! Ha! Those were originally named after the still pages they come from for the final format of the book, in print form. Just pretend you didn't see them. ;)

dcorsetto

Thanks for the feedback! If you don't mind elaborating, could you tell me if this just wasn't your thing, or if you like the animation approach, but would have done it differently? I'm wide open for discussion.

dcorsetto

I'm wide open for feedback if you have ideas or constructive criticism! This is a way new approach for me, and one of the interesting facets of sharing some of the story in animated form is that I'm forcing you to read it at the pace that *I* read at (which is deliberately slow). I could share this in both still and animated formats (that's how it'll end up in book form, after all), but I'm not sure how THAT would land with people, either, as it'd be a lot of repeated pages with just one or two changes. I would remove a few of the panels because they're actions that you would naturally fill in with your brain anyway, such as Kris moving toward the bed. Thoughts?

dcorsetto

OH DAMN! It's not; that was the lightswitch. WELP, I'll be redrawing that, then! (She was checking to see if the neighbor's window light had gone off.) Thanks for your feedback!

Bryan Cain

I thought the gifs were fun but any chance we can get the stills too (referenced in your earlier comment for the print version)?

dcorsetto

I'm preparing to do just that, thanks! I *think* there's an option to edit them into the body text of this post and then make all patrons aware of the update; gonna try that first.

Ruth Merriam

How much do you hate me, Danielle? I thought that was siding and a doorbell. 😕. I feel her pain. Even with hardcore blackout blinds, the light from the moon and the streetlights still gets in to our bedroom. I miss sleeping in the dark.

dcorsetto

Oh no, I'm genuinely grateful for your input! And actually... it's even more interesting that you read her sleepyface to mean that maybe she's irritated by all the light in the bedroom; she actually just moved, willingly, from a dark living room (very dark, now that she knocked over the lamp) to the light-filled bedroom. But... we'll get into all of that soon...

Jeremy Bearimy (@satyric)

I really liked the gifs. It very much captured that wee-hours exhausted dreamlike feeling. Especially her look emerging from the darkness, and the big sigh of the bedcovers.

Heather Cheney

I also really liked the gifs. I think the moon effect was way cooler that way than in the still images.

Monica Gallagher

DANIELLE I loooove the moody gorgeousness of these!!

Amy Simmons

This was very cool! Thanks for adding the stills. I liked the effects in the gifs, but the story line is easier for me to follow with the stills - or maybe I'm just more familiar with the stills. I like seeing these different formats though

E

It was a little hard for me to tell when a sequence was done and I needed to page forward, also I found I needed to keep scanning for what was changing and when. I think it was effective for showing movement and the light burst (?) but for me it was just awkward to interpret what was going on. I am still kind of unclear. Neighbor turns light on then off, later she sleepy goes to bed, weird moon light thing*. But I’m not clear on what is actually happening. It is just a me issue, the drawings were very good. * (reminding me of a childhood book series involving children, moon people, and I think hard boiled eggs)

Cat

That moon flash was something else

NickPG

Thanks for the still versions.

Sara Testarossa

I echo this! To me, the GIFs look cool, and stills are more clear. Really enjoying the comic so far!

NJGR

To add on, I loved that it forced me to watch a bit slower. Richard Thompson makes a joke about this in The Complete Cul de Sac, and it's stuck with me. I still forget to do it sometimes when I'm really into a graphic story, so I love the reminder. (And it definitely helped me appreciate the little bits of ambiance that you threw in.) <3 -j

Mike O'C

The science hobbyist in me is slightly worried about that flash...

dcorsetto

Oooh you're making me wanna revisit my Cul de Sac books. :)

dcorsetto

I hope the stills made the story a bit more clear! The neighbor had his light on the whole time, and the only change is that he switched it off. Otherwise, you got the gist. I'll assure you that you shouldn't understand everything that's happening, though. ;)

Caleb Fujimori

Knowing that makes me more intrigued to watch the gifs instead of the stills in future updates, and as other people have said, the moon flash definitely has more impact in the gif.

Glimpses Thru a Misty Lens

Thank you for the stills. I don't know why, but I couldn't make heads nor tails of the gifs. I'm glad your grandma is better. ♥️

dcorsetto

I'm not sure whose grandma you meant to send that to, but I'm glad the stills made better sense to you!

TEitDon

Nice! I loved the pace! So...was the indicator of the outdoor porchness of this room that the wall with the switch had lap siding on it?

Color Theory

Ooh, the animated GIFs are fun! Took me a minute to get the hang of it.

dcorsetto

The intro GIFs will be on the website, and there will be one element of the Chapter 1 GIF ending. I might be misunderstanding your question, though?
