While I was working on the thumbnails for Monday's update, Luke peeked over my shoulder and said that I should show these to y'all. This is hardly a spoiler, so I thought I'd show ya what I'm up to, and introduce my process while I'm at it.

This is what my thumbnails look like, in Procreate on my iPad:

Photos of the printed-out script on the left, proportionally-accurate page templates on the right. I added reference of Paul (since this is my first time drawing him), and I keep an overlay of the character's main color over the whole thing, to keep the mood in mind.

Conveniently, Chapter 2 takes place in the thrift store RIGHT next to my house, so I've been taking reference photos of it since early spring:

Did you know you could do this split-screen thing with newer iPads?? Makes working from reference photos WAY easier!

If this is news to you, here: slowly swipe the app navigation menu up from the bottom, press & hold your finger on the app you wanna share the screen with, and slowly move it upwards. Once you have that, you'll figure it out.

(I moved the tree to the corner of the shop so we can see Paul's car, which made me feel like a god. A lying, cheating god.)

This was my first crack at pages 3 & 4 as one big page, but I felt like Paul's action was confusing. HOW DID HE GET THERE, WHERE IS HE GOING? Hopefully it's a little easier to follow in the final version.

I dragged the final pencils for these two pages into smaller file I call "Workshop," which is set at an intentionally small resolution so that I can't get too hung up on details, and just focus on the composition. This helped me tweak the two pages a bit so they'll look like they fit together when they're next to each other in the final book (which is why my thumbnails are set up in pairs).

Next time I'll show you how I do my pencils and then move them to my bristol board to ink via lightbox, but for now here's a shot of my drawing board when I'm at the inking stage:

The allergy thing is pretty brutal, but having the windows open on this gorgeous day is WORTH IT.

Bonus round: this was ELLIE'S IDEA:

These days she snuggles up with Pip more than she did with her own sister! To think, I always assumed Ellie and Smudge were normal sized cats until this behemoth kitten came along.

Wish me luck coloring all these tiny fuckin' details in 24 hours!!

With the issues you've been having with your back/shoulder, is that chair supportive enough?

JEF Oliver

Great post; huge detail. That deadline must be looming really hard for that much displacement activity! Good luck.

Your fabulous workspace makes me realise that I really, really need to move my desk so that it faces my window.....

The chair is actually perfect because it's not restraining! I move into about a dozen ridiculous poses when I'm sitting there to draw. But both of my computers are at standing desks now, which... honestly has been pretty irritating to work at with these shoulder issues! Luckily it's getting (SLOWLY) better. Thanks for caring. :)

And now we know just how much it was looming!! I'm kinda grateful both of my computers gave up on Photoshop; it's giving me a reason to really take my time on the last two pages.

The only thing I wish I could change about my job is that I can't do it outside, and having those two windows (one on either side!) goes a looooong way to improving that. Do it, you'll love it!!

Captain Awesome

No problem. I have knee, back and shoulder issues, so I sympathize. Getting old sucks. Lol.

I'm beginning to feel the pains of working from home more and more. I just had a physical today and ended up with a referral to PT for my stupid lower back. Blech. And I'm trying to find a new allergy med (the one that works for me doesn't play well with other medications I started taking last year), so I'm feeling you on the allergy pains. BUT look at the kitties! <3 -jess

I've yet to master the split screen thing. Can never remember how it works. I've been loving procreate, but I still have to keep my phone handy so I can look at reference. As someone else with shoulder issues (made worse from unrelated surgery), I hope you feel better and stay well!

dcorsetto

Oof, I hope your lower back gets better! If your allergies are super bad (mine used to be; I just get a couple weeks of snot-face now), you might wanna ask about steroid shots. I got them when I was in my twenties and I remember they helped a lot. I stopped because "steroid shots" sounded like a really unnatural solution (mind you, I didn't research AT ALL). Then a few years ago, while I was visiting my friend who's married to a naturopathic doctor, he suggested steroid shots to me. I told him I was surprised he'd suggest that, and he informed me that steroids are naturally occurring in your body (hello, I know nothing) and they're actually something HE gives to patients. Dunno if that helps, or if steroids were the not-playing-nice solution to begin with, but I hope you find something!

NJGR

I've tried steroids before, but it wasn't super helpful. I also have problems with nasal steroids, so blech on my body. I do use steroids for a skin condition, but as sparingly as remotely possible. At least my back is fixable with exercise and stretches, so hooray! I hope your shoulder/ribs are feeling better soon!
