I always revisit the Elephant Town posts when I wake up the next morning, trying to look at them with fresh eyes, as if I were one of you. (I did this with GWS every morning, too.)

My reaction this morning was "DIRT." Miranda's color scheme is gold, and these pages were kinda... brown. (No offense, dirt.) So I spent a couple hours today touching them up.

The updated versions will be posted on Instagram (I post all of these pages a week later there), but I thought I'd share the before and after with you patrons so you can see the difference. ;)

For the record, there are things I like about those first versions, but these brightened ones feel like what I was going for originally, especially the glow of that sunlit final panel.

It definitely adds an extra layer of depth and helps define the mood. As a filmmaker, I know that color grades are vital to the look of a piece, and it’s amazing to see that same principle in action here!

This project is definitely feeling like I should've taken a crash course in film color theory beforehand! I'm picky but I don't completely know what I'm doing! ;)

I thought it was going for a mood, a state of mind

dcorsetto

It was, and I think the "early morning" quiet mood was set with the original pages, but the overall feeling of Miranda's world should be a little warmer. Just wait, I'll probably redo them in a few days and strike a balance somewhere in between. ;)

I think my reaction to the first version was less "dirt" than "run down", though really just with the first page. Once I read p.3, I realized it was just moving from pre-dawn dark to daybreak. In any case, I think the revised pages set a more positive mood from the start. It's pretty interesting to see both versions and how a fairly subtle change impacts the overall tone, so thanks for that :)

Is Miranda at peace? I mean in her soul, not in a perky in-your-face kind of way. Now I'm thinking about how much fairy dust she might have in her pockets. 😏

Meisterj

They feel so much warmer and welcoming. Much more like a clear morning by comparison.

I hadn't noticed the browner color scheme of the original, but seeing this edited version really does make quite a difference. It feels much more like a bright and cheery morning!

I love seeing these! (And you know how I was on the phone being like "waaahh my colors are so muddyyyyy"? Well, I had to pump up the brightness and saturation to compensate for CMYK print conversation, and it turned out that solved basically everything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

dcorsetto

Ooooh yesss!!! Also those colors did NOT read as muddy to me at ALL!! They looked great! Which begs the question... did these three pages read as muddy to you originally? Or are we both just preset to thinking that about our pages? (Honest answers only!)

TinaFoo Spencer

The lightened up version is much nicer! But only when comparing side by side with the original.

Lucy Bellwood

I think it's exactly what's happening here: I wouldn't have said that the originals looked muddy, but once I see the *revised* version I think "OOH!"

Lucy Bellwood

Basically exactly what Tina said below :P

All of the architecture definitely makes me nostalgic for New England. It's just not the same where I live now.

NJGR

Your colors are amazing in both, and I agree with others that, in retrospect, the brighter one reads more dawning -- but only because I'm viewing them together. And THAT BIRD!! ♥

Theadora

I did see the original one as a little muddy, a little depressing. The more golden tone makes it feel more dawn-like and hopeful.

For those of us not on instagram, are the updated version available anywhere here in non-animated gif format? Thanks

dcorsetto

They will be! We're working on the dedicated website for Elephant Town now. :)
