(Edited: the timelapse video didn't get attached, so here's a link instead!)

------------

Y'know how I've been barely getting two pages of ET up at a time lately? Blame this poster.

I am not a designer. Thus, I am VERY proud of this.

I'm not awful at design, but making something that looks not-bad takes me FOREVER. As evidenced by the 16-minute timelapse I'm attaching (SIXTEEN!!). I don't know who wants to watch 16 (SIXTEEN) minutes of me fumbling with a design that I changed three times and went back and forth on constantly, but in case you're that person... well, I learned a lot about my process by watching it (for SIXTEEN MINUTES!!), and it made me feel better about taking so long to finish it. So maybe you'd like to see it, too.

And if you don't have SIXTEEN MINUTES to watch it, here are a couple screen caps of the process! This was my first sketch:

Which morphed into this when I realized I needed more space for everything (and we didn't need EVERY individual craft listed):

(Nice job, D, just VOLUNTEER to draw a truck, that'll be fun for you!)

And finally, the final design (on the right below) kinda melded the list-of-things-on-timber look while taking that three-part forest design:

Somewhere near the  middle of the video I took about an hour to cut up the top part into a teaser image (so that we'd have SOMETHING to share while I finished the poster) which became this:

And finally:

Is finished!

In case you're interested in going, this will be at the Shenandoah Planing Mill in Charles Town, WV, and I'll be there with my Studio Tour group, selling drawings and doing caricatures (which I rarely do these days!). We'll be keeping an eye on CDC recommendations, but the mill is ENORMOUS and airy, and we'll be situated outside, so it should feel safe to most people.

ANYWAY I am REAL GLAD I didn't add that truck because I'd still be working on this, and probably crying.

Edit: the SIXTEEEEEEEN MINUTE video didn't seem to upload, so here's a link to it! Please let me know if it doesn't work for you!

AGH, BUMMER!! I waited awhile for it to download, not sure what happened. Thanks for the tip, I'll reply back if I can get it to work!

Your poster definitely makes me want to go to there! I love the different tree textures, and how all the lettering manages to feel differentiated but also unified at the same time.

Zombicatures by Stan Yan

Holy crap! I don’t think I’ve ever revised anything as many times as you did for this! Whew!

Jamie Noguchi

I love it! I love the texture of the brush you used! And the colors work really well. And most importantly, shit is legible and not overly ornate that it becomes distracting. Good instincts! AND I'LL BE VACCINATED BY THEN HOLY SHIT AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Andy Ihnatko

Yup, if I were taking a walk and I saw this poster tacked up on a phone pole there's absolutely no way I ain't stealing it. Lovely work!

This is beautiful, detailed and fun without being overwhelming. I think the revisions paid off, and I definitely learned some things from watching. I’ve had a few similar jobs before and also had to illustrate vectorized landscapes with some realism, and I’ll just say that trees and stands of trees with all their fractal beauty are challenging! These seem so energetic, individuated, and full. I love your process and the results! And I would go to this event in a heartbeat.

Ahhhhh! Wish we could be there! Also, Cold Storage Rd is... something else. 😁 -j

What a fun event! Definitely think twice or thrice before saying yes to this kind of work again, though. You didn't seem to enjoy the process very much. Hope you enjoy the actual event itself.

Haha yeah, I like how straightforward the road name is! The Mill is in a very old orchard storage warehouse and, true to its name, it's pretty chilly in there! Great for this summer show, though. :)

Trees are FASCINATING and so difficult to emulate!! I hear you. :) And thank you! As much of a timesuck as it was, I'm really happy with the results!

Oh I should've name-dropped the pen! It's one of the Dead Pen brushes in the RetroSupply pack I bought awhile back. Super fun brush! It's all jiggly and changes while you use it, if you look close-up. :) GET THAT VAX AND COME HANG OUT WITH ME BABYYYY!! My friend Shane will be there and you have GOT to meet him: https://www.instagram.com/the_otherplace_signs/

Luckily the only thing I really hated was how long it took! It actually was pretty fun, and a lot MORE fun when I finally hit up a graphic design genius friend of mine and she gave me two tips (move the dark green tree a bit more to the right, and let the sun go behind the "Mill" lettering) that changed the game for me. If I'm honest, the process of solving an art problem is never all that fun for me (comics are a HARD problem to solve!!), but if I like the results, it's always worth it. :) BUT YEAH, next time I need to be realistic about my timeline!!

Jamie Noguchi

OOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Look at those letters!!!!!!!!!!

Hugh Eckert

Lovely work! I like your style in this a lot!

Theadora

What a lovely truckless poster! Nice job!
