Hey gang! I wanted to show you this little comics-making station I set up for the kiddos for Summertime at the Mill on Saturday.

My default is "autobio comics with cats," so I rolled with it  since it's fast and easy.

If you've been following my garbage garden (garden updates coming soon!), you know that I love reusing packing material & trash. This giant piece of shitty chipboard was the biggest flat surface I had in the house, so it became the base for my poster.

I was going to make 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-panel comics from scratch but then I realized there are NEWSPAPERS in my house, so I let the syndicated professionals do the job.

This poster was a good excuse to practice drawing Ollie and Pip!

I was helpfully informed by DC writer Karla Pacheco that what I call "pointers" most of the industry calls "tails" so I altered that later!

Pip didn't like this dig on him by Ollie so he took it out on the shitty chipboard later.

There was space in the middle for a gratuitous large drawing of m'boys, so...

Look how proud Pip is.

I papered the table below with leftover newsprint from a roll I nabbed at my newspaper job SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO.

(The yogurt containers aren't as old. Perfect way to separate pencils and pens!)

I wrote the directions right on the paper.

Gotta keep those communal erasers corralled.

I think I printed 30 of these three-panel templates. By the end of the day all of them had been used! Success! Here is by far the best comic strip (ever) made, by second grader Aeris.

I have since quit comics, no other comic will hold a candle to this, why try.

The event was super fun and I'll definitely be using this poster again in the future! It  might have more Pip bites in it next time.

Thanks for your patience with me last week! Planning for & promoting the event took quite a bit of time. I hope the four-page ET update made up for the wait a little. :)

That's awesome! No doubt fun had by all who gave it a try

Dave Van Domelen

Clearly, David Willis sneaked in disguised as this "Aeris".

dcorsetto

David and Jeph, OR: a collaboration between them.

Jamie Noguchi

AHHHHHHH!!! This is so great!!! The comic to end all comics!!

kaitou

Jeph was the first person who came to mind for me. I figured Aeris was a fan of his. Looks like a successful session; congrats!

Iitu Ducin

You are so wholesome.

Hugh Eckert

Aeris has early onset Butts Disease. And cat drawings are never gratuitous- they are always necessary. Just ask the cats.

Ruth Merriam

Personally, I live for Pip fangs.

Teeceemcg

VERY well done!!! You are a great (and fun) teacher (as well as a connoisseur of 2nd grade boy humor)!

Douglas Appelt

Well, dang. If *Pip* can do it, maybe I should give it a try! :D

NJGR

I came here to ask about Jeph! 😁

NJGR

This is so amazing! I wanna see Danielle-the-elementary-art-teacher-for-a-day now! ♥

Andy Ihnatko

did you get aeris contact information i think you just found your new intern

narF

Butts

dcorsetto

YOU SHOULD!! He doesn't even look at the paper!

dcorsetto

Aeris IMMEDIATELY found me while I was packing up. She was carrying something small in her hand and she told me she wanted me to draw her hamster one day. I told her maybe one day I'd do that, and then looked down and realized that the thing in her hand was THE HAMSTER. She's just carrying this mammal around in fist, kissing it on the head every few minutes. Funny addendum: my friend Ryan took the photo of Aeris's comic, and when he showed it to me I got worried that the Mormon owners of the Mill - who requested this be a kid-friendly event with no references to alcohol, smoking, sex, or bad words - might find it distasteful. After the event was over, the co-owner of the Mill, Amanda, came up to me and told me what a hit the comic-making table was with the kids. Then she mentioned that her daughter Aeris made a comic, and... I did not hide my amusement. To my delight, she said that her daughter is everything she wish SHE'D been as a kid. That we all would have had Aeris's spirit, truly.

Tim Pendergast

I would not have pegged you as a Pickles fan.

Boum

That is so cool!!

dcorsetto

As do I, proven sometimes by my hands.

dcorsetto

I'm constantly impressed by the quality of Pickles! Also I'm getting very cozy with the idea of aging so I consider it RESEARCH.

Beck Archer

Frame the butts art work. It is truly frame-worthy.

Jason

This is a great display and instructional content! What a great way to give kids permission and encouragement to try something that they probably have little idea how to get started at! This kind of introduction and permission-giving is a skill all its own for any topic 👏

Akire Bubar

That's so freaking awesome! I enjoyed this so much.

Monica Gallagher

I cannot imagine how much work this took to put together, you're so gooooood! (but truly, no one is as good as "Butts" by Aeris)

Andy Ihnatko

As an adult, it's super-exciting to meet or hear about a kid like Aeris. With parents who fully appreciate their Aeris-ness, they could go anywhere.

M Aidan

Super great and i am totally stealing that idea for our next neughbourhbood street fest!!

Porter Mason

This is so wonderful! I want to make a similar thing for my daughters, as they are showing interest in making comics.

Chelsea Watson

Can I steal this for my class to do a comic drawing session?

Chelsea Watson

Awesome! I probably will switch out the cats for my dog of course

Theadora

This is so awesome! My partner teaches calligraphy at ren faires and this has a very similar vibe to their style! <3

Cathi Andrews

Such an awesome explainer and so good to give everyone permission to have a go. There are probably too many of us out there who rule ourselves out of trying without that sort of nudge. I love the positioning of Pips munches, alongside the pro-tip with Pip's fangs, and then the Lio strip where it appears they are staring at what Pip did, open-mouthed (fanged).
