I wasn't going to show this to you, because I was embarrassed that I spent so much time on it (and I know I'll spend more in the future). But my pal Luke posted this:

and because they're posted anonymously and I couldn't help myself,

And it's true. If I had a different job full-time, I wouldn't have enough time to make full-length stories in comics format. Comics take forever. My stories and characters would be content to just live inside my head.

But I'd probably draw things that bring me joy more often. I wondered what I would draw just for fun, and then I looked down at my desk.

I'd been drawing for fun for an hour.

And look, I know GARDEN PLANNING is an awfully utilitarian thing to consider "fun art." But I've been like this since I was a kid. I was always drawing bird's-eye views of my dream house (a contained courtyard inside a doughnut-shaped home full of windows), or planning out my next "fort" (basically exactly what I'm planning now, but without the YouTube knowledge of How To Tie A Tripod Lashing, so they always fell apart).

When I was in middle school, I used MS Paint to draw sprite versions of myself and all the clothes I owned, a sort of 8-bit paper doll. It took forever and the colors were super limited, so I gave up before I drew my whole wardrobe, but... well, this is what I chose to do instead of having friends. It was fun. :)

So, here it is, my "fort," the garden version of my digital paper dolls. The entirety of my plans for Spring 2022.

I'm sure this was an emotional response to the current state of my garden, which has gone from lush and productive to overgrown and brown and dying.

I've never put so much work into something that wasn't work related in my life. After spending the past decade ruminating on death (I'm fun at parties), I'm prepared to sit with the end of this project. While I'm clearly distracting myself with what my garden will become next year, I'm also taking time to be present with what is, and what was. Cutting down old dead plants and making space for weeds and decay and whatever else wants to thrive there on its own. Giving up control. It feels good and natural, and a little relieving.

Anyway, I thought I'd show you what I draw for fun. And in case you're interested in what I draw when I'm giving a virtual talk for a library, here are the little Procreate doodles I did last night while attendees asked me questions:

Angry horse.

A reptile by request.

I didn't mean to draw Erin and Jamie, but I totally drew Erin and Jamie.

If you were in the audience, thanks for showing up! Made me want to do livedraws more often. :)

And in case you'd like to see how I made the garden layout on Procreate, I'm attaching a timelapse of it. Enjoy two and a half minutes of me paper-dolling my yard. <3

So what are all the different plants? :) I got...tomatoes. That's it. But I'm also not a gardener. ;)

Larry Haller

Hey, don't give up on the garden! It's an iterative process, and no one is great the first time. I muddled through my first few years, then started the planning process, and now my neighbors are pretending to not be home!

Christina

I love this! thank you for sharing!

Drazi

I mean, you are in PA. It can't be any cooler there then it is up in Buffalo. I'm not surprised the garden is passed out from the heat. I know I am.

R

I came to this patreon for Elephant Town/any extra GWS stuff, but I'm staying for the plant content (and everything else, of course).

dcorsetto

Hahaha!! Hey, at least you got tomatoes! It's a little more clear in the video (I sketched out some of them first), but: > sugar snap peas at the back against the wall > down from there: tomatoes, kale, hot peppers > the rosemary & thyme bushes in the center are established > peppers around those bushes, a zucchini plant to the right of all that > cucumbers and cantaloupe trellised in the front And those weird Y-shaped things will be a few bamboo tripods for scarlet runner beans and Chinese long beans. Really optimizing the vertical space possibilities this time!

dcorsetto

I'm actually in WV! But close enough to PA that your comment about the heat is ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON. I'm barely leaving the house these days, myself.

Drazi

Oh, I could swear it was shepherd town. Heat might actually be worse further south

dcorsetto

You got it! There's a tiny Shepherdstown (I think even smaller than my tiny town) in Pennsylvania, too. :) And it probably IS worse down here.

Drazi

Oh good! I'm not crazy... about this. I was about to claim old person memory and hide in a corner

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Historical significance is overrated anyway! (not that I know about that I GUESS but certainly having fun is better than some of the stuff that comes with historical significance)

Sarah Katz

That horse is only pretending to be angry. ;) (The ears are waaaaay too perky for it to actually be pissed off.) It looks... determined. Very determined.

I missed the live draw! 😭 I would totally tune in to watch you draw and talk about death or gardening or cats. It's relaxing to watch the process and there are a few artists that we follow who do it regularly. Most are working on their comics or graphic novels, but I think Mary Cagle does some random things and it's enjoyable just to see an artist having fun. -jess

Teeceemcg

I would hope you wouldn't change much about your approach to art. Look at all the personal growth, the experiences you've had, the people met & the loves nurtured (like hot outdoor gardening). The fortune-teller is probably a republican anyway, allergic to the truth.

Paul W.

Love the video. Thank you!

Jessica Miller

I love this. I am not your longest follower I'm sure. I think I found you towards the beginning of Girls with Slingshots. But I enjoy all of your content. I of course love Elephant Town, but I also love your garden/life stuff. Thank-you for sharing yourself with us. <3

dcorsetto

Y'know, I was all onboard to say "who cares!" about historical significance, but the part about not making a living at it... I'd really be out a lot of hours if I had a different full-time job!

dcorsetto

Oh dang, you're right!! NICE TRY HORSE.

dcorsetto

I'm so grateful I've had the TIME to spend on personal growth as an artist! But, realistically, I wouldn't have had that time if I had a different full-time job. And yeah, after sending my answer, I thought "why the hell am I listening to a fortune teller?!"

allanfranta

NE Florida this year hasn't seen your heat, but I live in a swamp and vegi's need to be in pots or elevated, and they'll get overrun by tradescantia zebrina in my yard. At least it's green and composts well.

Pete Jordan

💜 That question? I'd be relieved; I write and otherwise create for me, the pressures and constraints that come from fame would be a nightmare, that apart from owt else, would risk paralysing me 🙂

look at me i’m stephy dee

Garden content forever! I have a notebook full of garden sketches that wish they could look even and eight like yours!!

Drazi

Explain to me how Florida has better temperature then the NE? I do not get this. 🥵

Stormsdream

What would I do differently? Obviously this fortune teller has never met me. And I love the garden

Sarah Katz

It's a glorious color and I actually really love it. I feel like I've known several with that exact attitude.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

It's possible to go halfsies? Part-time normal job, part-time art? I know a few who do, just fine! (but absolutely cool you can do all-time art!)

Andy Ihnatko

Yup, the horse made the common error of gamboling and rolling around in the yard just an hour after the grass had been cut. My aunt's terriers used to do the same thing, with the same results.

David Akers

I miss Jamie. Still my favorite character in the strip.

dcorsetto

Oh absolutely! I was expecting that for myself originally; no matter what I would have done for A Job, I was going to keep making art on the side. But part-time means I wouldn't have started Elephant Town (too long), and GWS probably wouldn't have gotten as deep as it did, because it would have been updated, say, twice a week? That's not often enough to delve into deep topics, if I wanted to keep people's attention (and, to be fair, my own). So it just would have been different!

Hey, draw things that bring you joy. I hope your "work" brings you joy too - it certainly does us - but yes, DO things that bring you joy simply because they do. That's an important part of life, too. My daughter revels in her garden as well. That's never been my thing, but I get it. I spent an evening doing math to figure out the exact sizes I needed to cut to get the odd quilt squares I needed for a project, which is something that made people's eye cross around me. Don't care. I wasn't into painting miniature ceramics, but that was their thing. Everyone has their own thing.
