ELEPHANT TOWN IS BACK DID YOU MISS PAUL

Buddy it's the *employee* break room, come on.

So I know Paul's not the fan favorite, but this chapter will feature some of the first few pages of dialogue I wrote for him, and it still tickles me, so I hope you like it. :)

PS, thanks to everyone who voted the other day, homegirl here is officially named Mallory!

Paul gets a ... 😑 For at least trying to be human. There may be hope.

Dean Reilly

Dang it Paul, you are showing more red flags than the Cultural Revolution.

Dea'ja

Urgh the cringe 😓 it's like you have to mentally prepare for the paul episodes 😖 it's only a few slides but sheesh that was hard to get through

Bori Vekony

Honestly, as cringe as the Paul episodes get, I'm actually very sorry for him. He seems like the classic undiagnosed autistic guy who makes a successful career in IT and just doesn't get what he's doing wrong in social interactions. The usual 'everyone seems to know the rules but I didn't get the book'. So he just tries harder, because that's the kind of advice you get -- queue more awkward and cringe. I really hope for a positive ark for him, because this is such a depressive reality for many autistic adults out there, fallen through the cracks because as kids they were intelligent enough to learn to somewhat fit in.

Steve Boyko

As someone who has misophonia, I was queasy just "hearing" Paul's wrapper / mouth noises in the last few frames. It's not endearing me to him. ;)

Cab

The cringe, THE CRINGE!! I loved how the burger bag got its moment of glory for 4 panels too :P

Evil Jorge

I feel for Paul. Connecting with people can be difficult for people with way more social awareness. Also, with blonde hair, I admit that she does look like more of a Mallory.

Ruth Merriam

And he's backing her up sooooo faaaarrrrr!

Ruth Merriam

I fully expected his lunch to fall through the greasy bottom of the bag before he reached the table.

NJGR

Repeat after me: "Women are people, just like me and you. There is no secret activation code." I have to admit that I had a physical reaction to this, where my upper body was angling away from my phone. I've been around too many Pauls... 😬 -Jessica

Damon Hart-Davis

It takes many many years for some of us to realise that there is no magic cheat code, sadly.

Boum

I’m always excited for Paul’s pages! It’s already hard enough to make people feel anything through comic pages, but you do it brilliantly. We feel TERRIBLE

dcorsetto

Ahahaah that is the highest compliment, thank you!!

Sabrina

oh no, nope. i literally cringed at that last panel. i love it!

Andy Ihnatko

I appreciate the challenge you've taken on with this character. Balancing "his behavior is creepy" with "he's _trying_" is playing the game on the Expert setting.

Susy

Paul is so cringeworthy but I like experiencing him and feel so sorry for him. Plus those "incel" frames were enlightening and shocking.

Bingewatch Improv

Love the little details. The tiny bits of food flinging from his mouth as he talks, the creepy grin in his shadowy outline as she responds to his greeting, font size to indicate over-loudness... I understand people trying to see Paul's side of things, but I'm really feeling for Mallory here.

NJGR

ME ⤴️

Pete Jordan

I feel for both of them! It's not that long ago I would've done a Full Paul in that situation… 🙂

dcorsetto

Ahaha I am so glad that's coming through!! You should see how many times I draw & redraw the eye shape on this guy to get that *chef's kiss* uncomfortable middle ground. ;)

dcorsetto

They're depressingly spot-on, too. Honestly I had to hold back on some of them (there's a lot of racism and self-harm talk in there, it's... woof, a LOT).

Fred Baker

Someone's in dire need of socialization.

Chelsea Watson

Paul is just so painful. You've done some amazing writing craft at making him such a painfully rendered character.

Tim Pendergast

I half expected him to pull a human heart out of that bag.

Theadora

Once again, thank you for all the personality you give everyone and even the backgrounds!

NJGR

I'll maybe just say that while Paul is not a favorite, not all characters have to be good or make good decisions. That said, I will say I'm trusting you have a good direction for his storyline, since it is a bit more... difficult to read than the other characters. That and the sadly true details of what he is going through make his chapters work so far, though! - - Neal

Ooooof. As an autistic married to an autistic I hate that this is the stereotype. Autistics are not a monolith, and there are definitely creeper autistic people, but IME, most of us definitely see people as people, not objects to conquer or own. We’re more likely to give people space because we find personal space precious. Now if she had sat down next to me, I’d be awkward as fuck, though, regardless of attraction. 😅 I’d be eating with a knife and fork though ‘cause touching food has been a gross sensory experience for me.

Bori Vekony

Also autistic married to an autistic, I totally not meant it in an "every autistic guy is like this". But I've actually had the misfortune to encounter guys like Paul in friend circles and workplace settings, way before I've known I was autistic, or indeed understood what that really means. Looking back though I can see how the utter social confusion can arise if you're not lucky growing up (social background, education, etc). I've only found out about a year ago, but I also strongly suspect most of my friends and social circles along the years are/were accidentally neurodiverse, also my choice of profession attracts 'weird people', and this kind of behavior was always rare. Rare, but not unheard of, and often leading to HR problems or being shunned from the community. This was the experience behind my comment, and the reason for my hoping for a positive ark -- I know now that I could actually better explain to some of those folks what they were doing wrong and why, or at least better explain it to whoever would actually handle the situation.

Sarah Manx

He's clearly trying something waaaaay out of his comfort zone without any social tools to work with. It's hard not to feel for him a little bit here, as cringy as it is (and as deeply uncomfortable as I'd be in Mallory's place).

Parks

Me too. It is a testament to the art that my sound misophonia gets triggered by these visuals. I literally squirm in my seat reading this!
