I'm prepping extra elements to (FINALLY!!) soft-launch the Elephant Town website this week, and I got VERY EXCITED over animating this little title slide frame by frame, blindly, on the first try! So I had to share it.

I use Photoshop for everything, because it's faster to do things in a stupid backwards way than it is for me to learn a new program (like, y'know, a program that's actually suited for animation), so this was a ridiculously convoluted process.

If you're in the $5 tier, I'll show you how I did it in a little bit. :)

"faster to do things in a stupid backwards way than it is for me to learn a new program" That is so universal to the tech experience (and life experience when you think about it)

That brush is my old Pentel pocket brush! I drew this huge on paper and scanned it in & bitmapped it. :) Thanks, Gary, I fuckin love hand lettering to deeeeath! Are you asking about tutorials that would help you letter like the Elephant Town title (spoiler: I cheated a bit), or the hand lettering on the byline?

dcorsetto

Hmm I don't know any good tutorials, but my main advice re: lettering is to GO SLOW, be deliberate, and most importantly, treat lettering as an ART (like you're drawing a face), NOT as "writing." We WRITE as quickly as possible with shorthands and cursive, because it's effective. When you letter, you have to stop yourself from "writing," and treat it like inking a drawing. Always have the letters fully penciled before you ink, so that you're focusing on the SHAPES of the letters, rather than their placement or what they say. And basic clarity tips (no matter what your font style is): complete the shapes of a letter (e.g., don't leave the cute little inside part of a lowercase "e" detached from the c-shape), and make sure that closed shapes have plenty of negative space (as in the top part of a lowercase "e," make sure there's enough space in that top keyhole that your brain doesn't have to work to differentiate it from a "c"). Hope that helps!

"I use Photoshop for everything, because it's faster to do things in a stupid backwards way than it is for me to learn a new program" - LOL. I do things the convoluted way for this very reason, ALL. THE. TIME. And feel sheepish the whole time I'm doing it. I feel a little better about this knowing I'm in such good company! 😺

Honestly, it'd take longer to learn a new program and I'd probably get frustrated way more easily! I bet that's the case for you, too. :)

WHOA - respect! See, ADHD is one of the reasons I resist learning the right way - because chances are so good I'll fall down any of half a dozen rabbit holes along the way & lose half the day. But I'm terrible at context switching & task switching - those are the hardest for me. But man oh man, I can hyperfocus like a champ...! Anyway, salutations, fellow fan of Danielle!

Also, this is GORGEOUS. It's hard to stop watching it! ❤

I echo Akire!! I read "rapidly apprehending new interfaces" and was like "WELP maybe I don't have ADHD after all, because that is the OPPOSITE of my experience." I have enough of [whatever acronym explains my brain] that I haven't really looked up on what ADHD even is, so... I have whatever THAT problem is. Because, yeah: rabbit holes.

Akire Bubar

Yep, exactly so. When I want to work, I want to work - not look stuff up! The way this is playing out right now is that Photoshop, for reasons I don't understand, has recently become completely unusable on my computer. So after wasting too much time waiting for it to stop spinning its wheels, I'm learning how to do image editing in Clip Studio Paint - which is the stupid way because that's not what CSP is designed for. Turns out it has tools for image editing that I didn't know were there, because I'm so much more likely to do things the stupid way rather than stop to look something up & risk falling down a rabbit-hole. So...go me, I'm learning some new tricks in CSP! But only because I've been forced to it, when what I should really be doing is figuring out why Photoshop keeps crashing. *Sigh*. 🙄 In my defense, yes - it's still less time-consuming & develops a more personally-relevant skill set for me to do things in CSP until I can get a more tech-savvy friend to help me fix the original problem.

I don't know if this is useful or not, but I sometimes practice lettering as a kind of art meditation. The right way is to do what Danielle said! But when I'm doing it as more of a meditation, I use ink - and I use the finest tip Micron fineliner I've got, even when the correct tool would be a calligraphy nib. I do this because it forces me to slow down, and to carefully notice and copy each tiny detail of each letter. Because I'm not using a nib that would fill in a lot of those details naturally, I'm forced to really notice the subtle differences between fonts, and I learn these differences much more clearly so that when I want to do them "for real" with the correct tool, I really know what I'm doing. Side note: this kind of focus really soothes anxiety for me! Might be maddening for other folks though, I don't know.

Danielle, do you teach cartooning online? Have I missed something? Because OMG wow wow wow yes please! 😺

Akire Bubar

Danielle, it varies so much from person to person! I didn't realize I had ADHD for years and years, because my best friend does & mine doesn't look at all like his. And also because the "cognitive load" of whatever else is going on for a person can really affect severity. My ADHD wasn't nearly so bad until some of my other mental health issues got a lot worse, and the cognitive load of dealing with those issues exacerbated my ADHD. The bright side of that, at least, is that means it probably won't always be this hard to manage those things! Progress in one makes for progress in all the others, at least to some degree (sharing in case that's helpful for anyone here). Meanwhile, navigating ADHD for me means avoiding possible rabbit holes as much as possible. I'm noting with some irony that that probably means I should stop farting around here in the comments & get to work... 🙃

RARELY, because it takes so much time & effort it displaces all my actual-comics work! But I believe the $5 tier here on Patreon has access to all of my 2015 lessons (the last time I did online classes)! I think you can just click on the tag "lessons" and it'll bring everything up. There are some broken links along the way, but most of the info is just in the inline body text anyway. I hope that helps you! There's some good stuff in there!

Daniiiiieeeeelllle! Damn, I love this! 💙 j

Agreed. This is why I still use MS Paint.
