Have you ever had a flight straight-up cancel and leave you in your layover city overnight? Of all the traveling I’ve done, this was my first!

I was stuck in Phoenix last night and I’m still in Phoenix, waiting for an ever-delayed replacement flight to join Lucy Bellwood & Erika Moen in California. On the bright side, outlets are everywhere, so I can power my iPad while I sketch little dumb things on it, and I’m nearly done re-reading one of my favorite books, Patti Smith’s M Train, a memoir/diary style book “about nothing,” following Smith in her 60s as a filthy old cat lady alone in New York, traveling on whims, writing in cafes, and remembering love lost. I picture myself living her life in 20 years. I told my childhood best friend Adam (Darren’s muse) that this book is required reading for him and anyone else who wants to be in my life til I die.

Erika asked if this drawing was inspired by someone at the airport, but it’s really me, crying while reading M Train, which seems to hit its most heartbreaking notes every time an attendant stops at my aisle and asks if I’d like something to drink. I fear I seem really regretful of my ginger ale choice every time.

If this new flight didn’t work out I was going to rent a car and drive myself and an accountant/nomad/stripper named Olivia I met last night - Santa Barbara is only 6 hours away - but our plane just arrived, so I think this is where my hijinks end for the day. I’m good with no more hijinks for a little while. I just wanna see my girls. <3

It happened to me in the year of our Lord 2006. I was in Seattle after the first leg of my flight, it was Christmas Eve, I was surprising my mother. Surprise! It took me two days to get there and I never got my suitcase back!! After canceling my flight to Charlotte they sent me to Minnesota where I got stuck for 24 hours because of snow! Who'd a thunk...

Phoenix in July has got to be the worst place for an unexpected delay! Try not to go outside...

A month and a half ago I had an almost two hour layover in PHX (to get to Tucson…90 mins away). When it was time to board they announced that they were missing a crew member and it would be another three hours at least and l’m pretty sure that entire flight left the gate to rent cars because haha. haha. Oh no.

Oh man, that is so sweet! I also love Patti Smith's books, and yes, they are a must. I hope everything works out for you on your trip! Flights are VERY unstable since the pandemic started - a lot more than before. Sending love!!

Thank goodness for power and internet, eh? Through these, all things are possible. Hang in there, have a good flight!

Damn, and here I was looking forward to the adventures of your accountant striper friend and you driving to Santa Barbara.

Got stuck in Columbus for 13 hours in 1996. They kept delaying our flight an hour at a time leaving us stuck at the airport. At one point they flew in a broken plane (yes, you read that right) and boarded us and made a failed attempt to fix it. My first and last flight on America West. So glad they're gone!

Oh man so sorry for your unexpected adventure, but I am MAKING NOTE OF THAT BOOK! Love me some Patti Smith!

It's not that I'm not glad for you that you got a flight in the end, but I am a little sorry about your not having a road trip with Olivia. She sounds like a most interesting and inspiring person to spend 6 hours with. The story ideas you might have gotten out of her 😍

AAGGGHHH. I'm glad things worked out in the end. Before the pandemic, I'd fly ten to twenty roundtrips a year. Since then, zip. Recently I realized that I've lost all of my emotional immunities to the overall ass-ness of air travel. I'd spent a lifetime building those up. The next time I fly, I'm going to react to each example of air travel BS the way that any rational person would if they expected to be treated as well as a customer of any other industry. It's not going to go well.

Chris Kalin

Yeah I'm not looking forward to the "worse before it gets better" phase of air travel. All the ass-ness of pre-COVID air travel and now, irate passengers diverting flights and getting everyone else's stress levels up!

David Neale-Lorello

Oh! ❤️💔💜 Cancelled flights suck, but thanks for sharing this (these) moment(s)!

Adding that book to my list to read! I read Just Kids by Patti Smith for a class in college and absolutely loved it. Hope you’re finally in California and having a great time!!

I was wondering if Horse Girl was someone you noticed in the airport, too. I'm glad your flight finally came, and I hope you have a wonderful time with Erika and Lucy. And I hope that you and Olivia had fun getting to know each other.

Yes, that happened to me in 2009. I was supposed to have a 10-hour layover in Dublin, Ireland, and it turned into a 49-hour layover. It snowed about an inch, and apparently they were completely unprepared to handle snow there, and every single outgoing flight was cancelled that day (except maybe 3 of them). Because almost everyone in the whole airport had their flight cancelled, the lines to re-book were huge. I didn't hustle to get in line, and the next day's flight was sold out before I got to the desk, so I got a flight the following day. Luckily I wasn't in a big hurry and I had a nice long book. I made a little vacation of it and took a bus out to see some pretty countryside during my extra day (having never been to Ireland before). Tons of us were sleeping in the airport, so we got the community feel of having a shared experience. It sounds like you got a bit of a similar community feel with your new friend, although I'm sure you wouldn't have chosen the delay. Sorry you had to deal with it, and I'm glad to hear it got resolved.

"An Accountant/Nomad/Stripper Named Olivia" sounds like a book I'd read! Hope she got to her destination safely!

I've been stuck unable to get home from a trip (the one where I got to meet you at a signing, actually!) but never at a layover. It almost happened to my brother though... while he was traveling as an unaccompanied minor! My dad had to call and raise hell with the airline so they'd figure out a way to get him to us that day.

Had a direct flight to Chicago from DC. United cancelled it with no explanation or compensation other than to put me on a flight to Kansas City with a 6 hour layover. The rental car I had off site got lost because their office closed by the time I got to Chicago. Had to get a car at the airport which cost me almost $200 more and almost lost my hotel reservation. No explanation, no apology, no compensation for my extra expense, just a too bad so sad. Haven't flown United since

I imagined you and Erika in the same picture, and my fanboy circuits blew a fuse.
