I really filled the page on some of these! This first one is actually a two-parter:

Ryan's heard this story so many times, he knew exactly who she was. Something else she and I have in common: I was a holy terror to my illustration teacher (though all of my old classmates say he deserved it!).

It's pretty comforting to take that three-page review (which was anonymous, but she didn't hide who she was) out of my Sore Topics file, and associate it with a grown-up who, I presume, would not rip me apart so brutally today.

I mean I'm not bad, but Luke's definitely the most normal person who's ever dated me. Dude likes his shit weird! And Halloweeny. >:)

METICULOUS. Ollie is a sociopath.

I'll spare you the photo. It has been buried, with a heavy log on top to keep the evidence from being exhumed for sport.

Here's mine:

Here's Karli's and Andrew's:

Ryan crushed his before I could get a photo. Sneaky bastard.

We'll be painting directly on these with acrylics once they're fired! No drippy glaze surprises this time!

And we were missing at least one other badass self-employed art major from Shepherd, who couldn't make it. Kinda blown away by the confidence and class these gals have. <3

Okay, brace yourself:

I think it's time to buy GoPros and attach them to each cat, find out wtf is going on here. So far we haven't spotted EITHER of them in the act?!

Anyway, I'll keep you posted, but let's hope this was just a one-week killing spree, never to be repeated again.

PS we still haven't found the head of #3. Pray for us.

Could it another cat or animal killing the squirrels and the cats are just playing with the bodies?

dcorsetto

I doubt it! Since the three cats and the dog own the yard (and Ollie sprays everywhere out there), no other cats come inside the fence anymore. And they're doing it FAST - I'll let them out in the morning, have my tea, and go out into the garden, and there's a freshly dead squirrel.

Stay on their good side, or head number three will end up in your bed.

Every housecat that's ever been born (at some point in their lives): "I am descended from the most lethal killing machines the Earth has ever produced. It's what I do."

kaitou

At least they aren't playing mafia (or meowfia) and leaving the head on your pillow.

Don't know what killed the deer that's almost gone out back, but foxes or larger keep dragging it around at night. I was hoping to get the skull but something took off the nose back to the eye sockets. Bonus action - turkey vultures got chased off by BALD EAGLES!

I love the little ghost dudes! I do not love the squirrel wars, lol, I'm glad ours are all indoor so there can't be mass murder (or vet trips for bites).

Silke Ceulemans

Ok not to encourage this too much but at some point I got a tiny camera to attach to my cat's collar, and even though it only records for an hour or so it's reeeally pretty fun. It also involves a lot of scrolling trough footage of sitting perfectly still in a bush for >45 min. But some of the video's are cute.

Maybe the squirrels will stop coming into. the yard? (Nah, they prob'ly won't figure it out; they've got the attention span of, well, squirrels...)

allanfranta

The Yard cat does the same surgery, she seems to be after the liver because the heart and kidneys are still in there. She does the same to the rats she catches. Squirrels stay away!

dcorsetto

Thank god I JUST found it... in my FLOWER bed.

dcorsetto

I considered popping their little dead squirrel heads on posts (and getting away with it because it's Halloween)... !

dcorsetto

AbsoLUTELY encourage me, that sounds FUN.

My wife's cat Frodo was indoor/outdoor all his life and ruled the yard and surrounding area with an iron paw. He'd take on anything, including large dogs, but the only thing that fought him to a draw was a squirrel. He pounced on it and it turned into a complete cartoon fur ball, they broke, looked at each other and went back to the fur ball. They broke again and then went back to the fur ball. When they broke the third time they looked at each other, turned walked in opposite directions. Other than that one time, he ruled the streets for almost 22 years. He's buried in the garden, my brother in Paris carved him a great monument in limestone and brought it over to Minneapolis as carry-on during a visit.

haha, now thinking of the time I moved one of my planters along the concrete, and apparently there was a slug under it, bc I found where the planter had been a slug squished so precisely as to have ejected its entrails into a nice pile beside it ... I'd never even THOUGHT about slugs having intestines, but apparently! (it was also SUPER GROSS and stayed on the concrete for WEEKS bc I couldn't bring myself to touch it, nothing came to eat it, and Spouse never goes to that area)

I look forward to future episodes of CSI: Danielle's Yard!

In 60 years' time, the whole neighborhood will be lush with shade trees. And nobody will know that the transformation is due to all of those hoards of acorns and other nuts that went unclaimed during the winter of 2023, and ultimately seeded out. (Except for the squirrels. The squirrels will know.)

dcorsetto

That cat sounds amazing and your brother's carry-on limestone memorial sounds INCREDIBLE?!

dcorsetto

I love this hypothetical consequence.

Jon Guyer

Sometimes that just happens to squirrels. Especially the cheap imports.

In the future when archeologists dig up our lives what will they think of all the buried animal skeletons around the edge of our yards? I know where a cat is buried in the yard of a house we no longer own. Nice wooden jewelry box from the thrift store. It was a classy burial.

Naufragous Kat

Dude so when I was like … IDK, 13? I come home from school one day and my mom is all “YOUR cat left you a present” and there was a citrus rat straight up eviscerated with the viscera artistically arranged out on the back deck.

Naufragous Kat

A perfect arc of various tiny organs.

Hazel-dog just found a dead rabbit in our back yard. IDK if she killed it; she does have a high prey drive, though. OTOH, there are also foxes in the 'hood and she might have just scared the killer off...
