Once, in my twenties, I was pulled over for no reason, and my entire car was then searched for drugs, with no explanation as to why (was it the Kevin Smith bumper stickers?). Since then I've learned that I'm allowed to *ask why,* even though the thought of confronting a cop terrifies me (because I'm afraid to confront ANY stranger).

So, uh... this was embarrassing. :T

Remember my beloved Canon Hill Antiques store I mentioned in my hourlies last week? Well...

I felt very navel-gazey writing this, but I was surprised by how hard it hit me, and wasn't sure why at first. I needed to write it out.

My high school best friend Adam was the one who introduced me to this old stone two-story building with at least a hundred different vendors inside it. Since then, half of my house is now decorated by them. All my hanging lamps y'all covet were found there. Foster came into the kitchen while I was writing this, and told me that the chair I was sitting on (his contribution to the kitchen) was bought there. The people who ran it have become these mystical characters in my timeline; older, rough around the edges and familiar with half the people who came in. You know that rare movie where the background characters are so interesting and feel so established, you kind of want a spin-off about just them? That's the kind of people who ran this place.

Anyway. I was hoping the fire had only destroyed the back of the building - that's where the photos showed it fuming from - but as you can see from the other photos and their GoFundMe page, if anything wasn't destroyed by the fire, it was probably destroyed by water.

Anyway, anyway. Maybe one day I'll do a comic about "The Dress." I'm 95% sure Adam bought it for me from Cannon Hill.

I haven't written about my clown roommate in awhile, so...

The term "clown college" never ceases to slay me. (Btw, my housemate is going by Foster these days; no pronoun changes or anything, just a name shift!)

IT WAS FINE, my charts were perfect and my doc even told me I hadn't needed to come in to "check in" on my Celiac disease unless I'd had symptoms of a bigger problem. But it feels good to be told I'm not dying of colon cancer.

I love his backwards out-of-nowhere elastic-band SPROINGs three feet into the air.

What I'd originally planned to write about was how Pip woke me up at 4:45 and I couldn't get back to sleep, and how nice it was actually, because I woke up to a COMPLETELY unexpected snowfall that caused Luke's school to close for the day (so I went over to have breakfast with him, a rare treat). And I got to take pre-sunrise photos of how pretty it all was.

Thank you, Pip, very thoughtful of you.

Nothing like a dramatic breakup happening outside your house to remind you that you really don't have it that bad with your partner. (Idk if I've ever talked about this here - maybe just on Twitter - but people break up on my street all. the. time. I think because it's just far enough from the center of town and all the bars, it seems like a safe quiet place to have a drunk argument!)

I may have written a comic about the janky setup I had for my standing desk... but in case I didn't, it was two wrong-sized planks of wood wobbling on top of some wire racks. So...

Guys, it is BEAUTIFUL. Look.

(MY SCANNER CAN FIT ON IT?!?!)

My monitor used to sit on a box of GWS books and some excess 2x4s, but now it sits atop...

... a widdle house for Fennel.

Here's a photo of the setup while I was tweaking today's batch of dailies, using that screen mirroring trick I wrote about awhile ago:

I know you can't feel it, but this desktop is SO SMOOOOOTH. And no hardware - it's all wood joinery! He brought it up in pieces and put it together easily in the studio.

Eric wants to start woodworking professionally - he works in tech and he craves that hands-on tactile experience - so if you're local and you need something made, let me know so I can hook you two up!

And since I shared Fennel, let's round this out with something that has NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE and MAY NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN:

Incredible. May something unprecedented and beautiful happen to you this weekend, too. Happy Friday!

we have the same scanner! your desk is cooler but mine's antique and also holds a 3d printer. and omg look at those two cuddling, who knew this could happen in our lifetimes???

dcorsetto

Ooooh an antique desk AND a 3d printer?! Sounds wonderful. :) That scanner is the best, the best!

Tudza

I have that same scanner. Still in the box. I bought it, Amazon never delivered, I cancelled and got a refund, it showed up weeks later. By that time I made do with a different scanner configured for scanning in lots of photos. But, should some professional level scanning be required, I'm super ready. For the 2000 slides I scanned in years ago I rented a purpose built scanner from a camera place. It produced TIFF files of all things.

Amy Crook

I actually prefer the tiff files, and make this scanner do that, too. Lossless compression ftw!

MaryAnne Glazar

I love that photo of the streetlight through falling snow! California is fabulous, but I do miss snow. (Sometimes. Not accompanied by below-zero temps. Maybe I don't miss snow that much...)

Hugh Eckert

Gasp! Pip and Ollie chilling with each other! Amazing... and adorable. Also, Fennel is obviously in supervillain mod in that shot.

dcorsetto

Oh yeah she is definitely thinking villain thoughts!

Tim Pendergast

Oh yes! Some serious tortitude emanating from that pic!

David Wright

You mentioned where your "monitor" would sit, and then there's a picture of Fennel, so I thought "Huh, Fennel is her monitor. Keep her straight, Fennel" "Gets too work, hooman!"

dcorsetto

"O u were going to slide ur keyboard in here? *bat bat* BACK TO WORK lol"

NJGR

Oh no! I'm so sorry about your memory house/antique shop! It's the same level of memory loss as someone buying one of your memory houses and completely changing it for the worst, but a bit more traumatic since it wasn't the owners' choice. 🫂 Also, Fennel house for the win! -Jess

Re: Cannon Hill. So painful! I get it. If we're lucky, we have a few places in our lives that we get to interact with periodically across our lifetimes. When they change or disappear, they really do take a part of us with them. They can remain in our memory, but something special happens when we can be there (and is lost when we can no longer). 💔

I think a couple goes through three Valentine's Day phases: 1) Relationship is young, you both go a little nuts 2) Relationship is established, but you're both still overthinking a lot of stuff because "is this gonna be a forever thing?" is always on your minds; risks of treating V-day too seriously or not seriously enough seem like they're as high as the risks of thinking your partner is taking it too seriously or not seriously enough 3) Relationship is fully mature, consequently there really are no wrong answers here.

Andy Ihnatko

Upsides of being self-employed and childless include being able to lean into how beautiful a big snowstorm is, without being distracted by the knowledge of just how hugely this weather is going to **** up your entire goddamn week.

Andy Ihnatko

Your workspace looks terrific! This is a place where one can get excited about sitting and working all day.

Monica Gallagher

These little glimpses into your life fill me up so much! <3

The decades-old antiques shop in my neighborhood shut down last year. I miss it. The owners were great (a pair of sisters who often bickered gently about the business), the inventory eclectic and ever-changing, prices were reasonable, and it could be relied upon to provide fifteen minutes of amusement during a daily walk and/or the perfect antique frame for a new piece of artwork.

dcorsetto

YES!! I've loved snowstorms for *whispers* nineteenyearsthisMarch, because I never NEED to be anywhere. I had to brush off my car and swerve around slowly in the slush that morning, because of that aforementioned doctor's visit that took six months to actualize... but normally, it's nice that we get to sit back and sip a hot beverage while watching the blanket accumulate outside. :)

dcorsetto

*MANY HEART EMOJIS*!!!! Sometimes I feel like I'm writing these to catch faraway friends up on my life. :.)

dcorsetto

Ahh that sounds wonderful. I'm sorry it shut down!

Andy Ihnatko

And when I moved from a house into this building, I no longer even had to think about having to shovel anything!

Paul W.

That’s how to stick the landing!

Becki Brothers

I still can't get over how big Pip is! My Theo has a white patch on her chest, so we kinda have twinsies!

allanfranta

Did Eric make the monitor stand as well? I need something like that for my computer desk (which I got in 1991).

dcorsetto

YES!! It's just a set of hairpin table legs screwed into a plank of wood, but he shaped the plank of wood so that it's ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. That said... previously, I had those legs screwed into a scrap of wood I found in my garage, so if you order some legs online and have a screwdriver, and a plank of wood the right size, you can do the same for yourself!

dcorsetto

(Just not as pretty, obviously! But it worked for me for a few years.)

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

Oh noooooo I saw about the big fire on South street the other week but I didn’t know it was Cannon Hill! 😭

allanfranta

Wood, screws and tools I have, now I need to measure (head scratcher that one, about 4-5 inches?) and find and get those hairpin table legs. Thanks!

Chris Driggers

I loved the snow photos! My sis was saying there was going to be some winter action 🤣

Minzoku Bokumetsu

OH NO FIRE D= The first time I was ever pulled over was for that exact thing: I was in college and was driving perfectly normally, so, uh????? And they said it was for expired tags, though I didn't have the sticker. My dad ended up going to court, and they said, "You look different from what we expected!" (haha) though he explained that it was his fault (he took care of the car and missed the registration)

M Aidan

My partner and i aren't into big showy celebrations for anything and felt the same about Vday. But by coincidence, Feb 14 was our first 'date', and then 15 yrs later it was also the day we found out i was pregnant! Since we don't have a wedding anniversary, Valentines ended up being important to us after all 😆 it's the one holiday that's just us, not our families too.

dcorsetto

Ooohh yeah, that's a really choice holiday for that, since no one can get huffy if you don't spend it with them!

dcorsetto

Mine are 7"! Of course, YMMV (your monitor may vary)!

dcorsetto

Aww that's super nice of your dad!

allanfranta

4" for the legs and 1/2" of plywood for a triangle for the shelf. The piece I'm cutting has a lip (I'm repurposing wood which I have, yay!) and I'll round the edges and paint or polyurethane after sanding. I also may need to paint the legs as the only 4" ones available are painted gold (what, no chrome?), and I will have a spare leg if Eric needs one?

Cathi Andrews

Despite the sadness of the Cannon Hill fire, there was just so much goodness in this post. I'm reading it in 41°C heat (still) at 6 pm and looking at that beautiful, icy pre-dawn snow photo definitely notched me down a degree or two. It's other-worldly in the best of ways. I'm pretending that I am standing beneath the snowfall, since there's not even any breeze yet to freshen the muggy house air. As for the desk that is amazing – what sort of wood did he use and has it been treated in anyway? It's a very unusual colour, but stunning nonetheless. I love how much a change like this can improve the feel of a home-workspace. It brings a real sense of peace. Eric is obviously good people. (Are you gifting him the original?)

Hmmm... Patreon got your tongue? :/

dcorsetto

DAMMIT!! I was wondering if other people were seeing this or not?! If I try to type out a carrot + 3 (old-school heart), it always goes blank for me!

dcorsetto

Birch! I talked him into using a solid-coat stain in "Platinum" which still shows off a bit of the grain, but gives the desktop a color that matches the rest of the studio. The birch is amazing - super lovely and smooth, sturdy and strong, but light as hell. And thank you for reminding me, YES, I should give him the original daily! I have another little gift in mind for him, too. :)

dcorsetto

(What part of the world are you in that's *checks conversion* ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE DEGREES F, might I ask?)

Steve Boyko

We have the same scanner! It's awesome. I bought mine second hand from a student who no longer needed a scanner (and maybe needed the $100). I use it often for scanning old negatives and slides, and the occasional piece of paper.

Cathi Andrews

I'm in Perth, Western Australia. We're used to a 3-4 day heatwave in Feb as our schools resume, but we've had multiple this month where there have been consecutive days above 40℃. Some parts of the state have nearly hit 50℃! 🔥🫠 BIrch makes sense as to why it looked unusual to me - we do get furniture in birch here, but it's not a commonly used wood, except for imported things. Maybe IKEA do birch/look? Anyway the colour really makes it 11, since the (custom) handmade and gifted already hit 10/10.

I'm pretty sure it takes < as the beginning of an HTML tag, which once actually worked on Patreon but now just get sanitized away... D: (Use "& lt ; 3" to write an ASCII heart... and take out the spaces here, because even though it should not it also ate my text... D:)

dcorsetto

Oh dang, that's a heck of a trick! Gonna try it here: <3 Thanks for the trick!

dcorsetto

WELL I GUESS WE'RE JUST NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE HEARTS DOWN HERE ARE WE?!

Leak

<3 EDIT: Ugh... try <3...

Leslie Carter

Your new desk setup made me nostalgic: I miss my woodshop!! ... But, looking forward - I gotta get me a scanner, too! That's an Epson #? (I couldn't zoom in on the image well enough to snoop ;) )

Leslie Carter

Yah, I may take you up on that (need to kick a wicked case of bronchitis first)!
