I recommend go ahead, it is well written, characters have depth and are complex. It's a family bond type of shows. Family by choice (kdrama) is a remake of go ahead.

1. Meet Yourself.. 40 episodes. In my opinion it should satisfy what you need from an emotional drama, it's has emotional depth, it is trust the audience kind of writing, it shows grief and healing and to me they handled/wrote it well

It's hard because I know you don't like historical dramas but if you're looking for a Chinese drama with that drama and depth and emotional release historical Chinese dramas are the way to go! If you ever feel like giving that road a shot I guarantee you can find something with that feeling you would like! I honestly can't think of any modern ones I've watched that give the same feelings? Mayyybbeeee Lighter and Princess (in a way) or Loves Ambition? Seriously though, Chinese historical dramas are where they put the money into so thats where the stronger dramas are.

lol i guess chinese dramas and i aren’t meant to be😭😭 i know this is shallow but i find it SO hard to find the men attractive when i can tell they took 20 years in the makeup room😭😭😭😭😭 and then all the power struggle stuff is uggghhh so boring to me🥲 and then i know there’s a lot of fantasy too which is my 2nd least fav genre to watch… it feels like it’s not meant to be🥹

I get that! I will literally drop a cdrama if the makeup is too much but I think there are alot that aren't bad costumes, makeup and wig wise (the males wigs kill me sometimes so annoying) and thats from someone who was a historical drama hater, I still prefer modern ones but Chinese dramas have really good storytelling with their historical ones sometimes... I would just recommend to give it a shot before calling it quits with them entirely? Maybe pick one where you already like the actors? (Lmao thats what I always do) Anyway just a rec! If you dont like it you can always drop it too 🤷‍♀️

I can't help but think a lot of costume dramas fit what you are looking for so well lol. I feel like the global market for cdramas is currently very focused on idol dramas (both modern and historical). I know you are not into historical ones, so here are some modern ones that I really enjoyed! One of the recent ones that I finished was Light of Dawn; it's definitely on the darker side, mystery/suspense. Meet Yourself is a slice-of-life comfort drama that I find myself rewatching, one of my favorites. Under the Skin S1 was a good detective/thriller drama, inspired by a real officer and real cases. Some other ones are Go Ahead, Nothing But You, Me and My Family, Remembrance of Things Past.

Someday or One Day is very good, lots of plot twists and very well writing/acting. Another recommendation is Shining for One Thing, which is also very popular and well written, emotional and not shallow. Lastly, The White Olive Tree is quite a unique type of drama for Chinese dramas, has depth, realities, romance.

like some of these comments,, historical is where a lot of deep characters and plots are while modern is mainly focused on more cutesy.. but i think it can have some!: Go Ahead, Meet Yourself, Love In Spring, Our Generation, Reborn, Fireworks Of My Heart, Better Days (it's a movie but it's SO GOOD!). literally no pressure at all but if you venture off to wanting to try historical, a really loved drama for beginners is called "Blossom". the main fl and ml are such baddies and imo the makeup looks natural for both! :) love your content

I’ve also tried getting into C-dramas, but I honestly find it hard to come across ones that are truly well written. The only one I genuinely enjoyed was Loving Strangers, and even then, it’s a remake of the K-drama masterpiece My Mister. You really can’t go wrong with that story. My Mister is probably one of the best Korean emotional dramas ever made. If you haven’t watched it yet, you absolutely should.

I've watched a lot of cdramas but idk if I can think of one that can fit 100% what you need, closest is maybeee Go Ahead(you watched the Korean version already) or some costume dramas. I'm in the same boat as you and struggle to get into them which is why i tend to watch cdramas for the angst/romance shows like Deep Affection Eyes or Sniper Butterfly and kdramas for the more deep written thought inducing ones. Hopefully someone here can help bcz I too would like to enjoy more than just the romance side of cdramas

19th Floor (An adventure & mystery drama taking place in an alternate universe. It's complicated but good complicated), Go Ahead (In depth drama on family and belonging), Light Beyond the Reed (Dark themes but real issues), Unexpected Falling (Sounds romantic but is more crime & mystery), The Prisoner Of Beauty (Period & Political Drama - but not boring), Will Love In Spring (Romance but has a lot more depth, and it's between an older couple), Always Home (coming of age, heartwarming) and You Are My Glory, Meet Yourself (Slow and comforting but the storytelling is detailed and balanced)

I am new to Cdramas so I really haven't watched many other than the ones you have reacted to. So all of the comments are good recommendations to me. I have started watching Love on the Turquoise Land and so far it has been great. It is a modern era drama and In my opinion, it is dark, and a thriller that has been really suspenseful with some supernatural elements. The ML and FL have been fantastic in this.

I would highly recommend “Meet Yourself”. It is in my opinion one of the best executed c-dramas out there. It’s Ike a healing drama with small town vibes similar to “Hometown Cha cha cha” and “Welcome to Sam dal ri”. With a semi-ensemble cast, each of the other character have a lot of depth and their storylines do not detract from the main story or themes of the drama.

Angel Fall Sometimes has that romance and emotional factor and it balances it out however it is more of a emotional Romance and really deep and the complexity of characters is amazing too. The acting is very good too. I think this one falls into that category that you mentioned

I can Recommend a list of these kinds of cdramas that you are looking for: -Angel Falls Sometimes, Lighter and Princess, The White Olive Tree (OMG THE TRAUMA), Will Love in Spring, Fake it Till you make it, and also I would like recommend this movie, All these years. All of these give the vibe of My Mister at some points yeah. I would love for you to try historical or fantasy cdramas someday if that day ever comes haha... Also Love Watching and discovering different types of dramas with you.

i think you’ll ‘love lighter and princess’ based on what you’re looking. it’s a modern angsty cdrama that i think is super underrated cz many people dont really like complex characters & also u should check out ‘love in the clouds’ its a historical fantasy romance drama that i think have a complex characters/plot. i also love the acting on these dramas theyre such a good actors/actresses. hope you’ll check these two out

You Are Desire is a very good cdrama and the male lead from when i fly towards you is in it. We also have see you tomorrow cdrama it's the female lead in this drama she in the drama. The chemistry and romance was awesome you should check it out and story is peak.
