Regarding purpose: I'm not a nihilist, but I struggle with purpose a lot. I don't really believe we have enough information or foresight to make educated guesses about which task has 'purpose'. Hindsight is 20:20 right? I have the same problem with pure utilitarianism ("How do I know that whacking the burglar over the head will have the intended effect? And if it doesn't work out, was I wrong in doing what I did?"). I think virtue ethics generally gives more satisfying answers for daily life: Is that something a person I'd aspire to do would do? Or, for us weirdos: Because it's something Himmel the hero would do. Coming back around: I work in IT, something you escaped from (congrats), but just looking at the task/work, I'd have no idea how to evaluate which has more 'purpose'. You already alluded to impact, but how do we do that without perfect information?
