Content

I was thinking about ways to add content to the Patreon more regularly and it occured to me that since I discontinued the Discord there hasn't been a good way to ask questions one on one. Some people do anyways in the comments of unrelated posts and I'm usually happy to answer, so comment a question you want me to answer under here and I'll do my best to answer it to the best of my ability! You can ask me about AvA/the content or more personal stuff, I reserve the right to not answer any question, yadda yadda. Let's see how this goes!

Roughly how many more releases do you have planned this year (this includes Caine and SCM)?

TCMF 123

How do you choose subjects for Animation VS Anything?

Bombguy

When willl the two AVA come out

Tyler, the Rap Battle Guy

EVER STAB YOUR LITTLE BROTHER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT? WATCHED THE LIFE EXIT HIS EYES WHILE WIGGLING THE KNIFE? WHAT, THINK IM AFRAID TO GO AND SLASH YOU FREAKS WHEN I LITERALLY "CUT OFF" MY FAMILY?

Joziah Zamora

What’s one of your personal favorite rap battles. Either ones you made or someone else’s. (p.s. I love your rap battles, my favorite is Pomni vs Jevil)

emogirl.EXE

Do you have a dream matchup you’d love to do one day but haven’t been able to?

Sizzle !

How do you find producers for your rap battles, the berdly vs Tobias battle and the Pomni vs jevil battle are genuinely fantastic beats that supersede the usual quality of the this scene. How do you find people so good?

cucharaaachaaaaaa

Are you ever gonna release the full old Smiling Friends vs DHMIS beat?

Eddiefrb

it depends greatly on if the album drops late this year like I'm currently planning. If it doesn't, (counting Caine and SCM) 5 or 6. If it does, 7-8 with all the other album track audios too

Orrin Richardson

How does the process for creating an AVA episode start? Do you have a method on how you come up with the lyrics?

ayana/alice

is there any show/piece of media/fandom that you've had many requests to do a battle for, but you haven't done due to a lack of knowledge of said fandom?

JHComixIsKewl

Will you ever continue the Remake series you started with Salad Fingers vs The Marionette? I'd personally love a remake of Roger Rabbit vs Max or Jack vs Sans in your modern format lol

MrAnt

How much research has to go into some of your videos? I’ve always figured you had to do a lot since you include a lot of niche references in the battles.

Eddiefrb

the biggest factor is if I like the character and if I have a fun idea for a battle with them. Most of the time I figure out a rough "angle" for a battle before beginning proper work on it. Like I came up with the story of Pomni vs Jevil before beginning work on it. So if there's a character I like but I can't find a good matchup or overall concept for the project it doesn't happen. Now that I'm doing it full time, I also have to consider how well I expect the video to do. The videos regularly cost thousands to produce now and while it's not terribly hard to recoup with a successful video it does put pressure to use characters and do matchups I think people are going to actually watch so the business stays afloat. It's not the end all be all, though, I have a couple coming up (including one later this year!) that I don't expect to do super well and are more for me. Still working on figuring out the balance

Trevor Birdsall

What are your thoughts on this matchup: Sonic the Hedgehog vs. Rainbow Dash?

Eddiefrb

The most detailed answer I can give you right now is that Caine vs Tenna will be first, it will be in July, and then Suction Cup Man vs Peppino will be after that in August. Rough estimates are mid July and early August (maybe like 3 weeks apart) but it's genuinely hard to say. Animation is unpredictable

TCMF 123

Respect, man. ✊🏾

Eddiefrb

here are three different answers to your question: my favourite (that I've made): snow white vs ramona flowers my favourite (that I've made, that is out right now): dr. doofenshmirtz vs doctor doom my favourite (that someone else has made): alexander the great vs ivan the terrible

Wyatt Stringer

Have you ever had to deal with having bias for a character? Has it ever factored into a battle?

Eddiefrb

yes, I have a very detailed concept for a Frieren vs Link that I am going to keep in the vault until I have the budget and capability to get it fully animated in an anime style. Frieren is my favourite anime but it's also the kind of thing that's too important to me to waste on a throwaway battle. So, hopefully one day I get the chance to make that

Braeden Polhamus

What are your top 3 favorite rap battles from anyone other than your own channel? No particular order unless you have one. Mine are Flowey vs Monika from Gamingplush64, Buggy vs Arthur Fleck from Freshy, and Dr. Doofenshmirtz vs Dr. Doom from you. 2. What do you think is your best battle?

Twiggaming

Will there be any more fire instrumentals of the past?

Bombguy

For the 2end one you should do this scm is climbing up the pizza tower and peppino at it

Eddiefrb

The Tobias vs Berdly and (first) Pomni vs Jevil beat were from waera who actually is now doing incredible work for underground artists like slayr. Most of the production I have from him was from years before he blew up and I found him through twitter back when I used it. For most other beats I like scouring type beats on YouTube. Most of the beats I used now are leased from small YouTube producers. The wisdom growing up in the community was that YouTube sucked for beats but it really is the best place to find the most interesting stuff, you just have to 1. know what you're looking for and 2. spend the time looking for it. I enjoy doing it every so often for fun and I have a huge playlist of beats that I like and could use so for most projects I start there when I'm beat searching. Also I do the arrangements and I have other people who can do added production and professional audio engineering to beef them up past what you'd hear from the base example beat on YouTube. It comes down to having a vision and then finding something I can sculpt.

Eddiefrb

Probably not because it was just a beat from Kustom with no changes. The reason I changed it, actually, is because Kustom's new website's system for buying beats straight up doesn't work (or didn't when I was working on the project) and I was unable to get in contact with Kustom to get a proper license or stems. Maybe I'll post it here if there's enough interest but never publicly cuz I don't own any part of it

Dr. Awkward

At the risk of asking a broad question, what's it like writing for a battle once the research step is complete? Are there specific lines that come to mind, certain subjects or themes (character flaws, past actions, the real piece of media) that get touched on first? The writing has always been the part of AvA that I've found most impressive and interesting, and I'm curious about the process.

emogirl.EXE

i hope you get to make it one day!! i’d love to see it

Eddiefrb

It's hard to describe my creative process in a way that makes sense. I think the best way I could explain it is that after I come up with an idea I like, I sit on it for several months to slowly accumulate lyric ideas day to day and also to make sure that I don't get tired of the matchup or the beat choice. For every battle that gets made there are 3 others that I swore I wanted to do, then sat on for a week and decided they weren't worth it. This is my system for filtering out the lower quality, less interesting ideas and leaving only the stuff I'm most confident will stick with people long term instead of coming and going. When it comes to the writing, I always research first, which usually means playing the game or watching the show/movie etc that the character comes from and taking notes on notable things that happen to the character, or happen in the story that I think I could turn into a lyric. I do this even for stuff I've already played or watched - for Caine vs Tenna alone I replayed Chapter 3 like 3 times. Then when I'm properly writing I try to turn each note into a line idea. Ideally I'd also have some jokes that just came to me naturally day to day, I have an enormous note on my phone that has every idea I have day to day sorted by matchup. I like to do this until I have a whole smattering of decent jokes and couplets, and then I decide the structure from there. If I have enough good stuff I can start placing lines in certain areas, figuring out how the song will flow, and then fill in the blanks.

Muse

I always think to myself “I need to only ask this when it’s like relevant” and then the moments arrived and I forgotten anything I’d want to ask you lol

MintOreos

If you were to write a battle that has a character from a media you’ve already finished in some way, do you usually go back and rewatch/play it before writing or would you just write the battle based on memory?

Eddiefrb

I went into a little more detail in another comment, but I can say personally a big part of writing is watching every other battle anyone has ever made with the character (or the franchise if it's general enough) not to steal line ideas but to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious. I am embarrassed at the amount of times I've been almost done writing a script and spent so much time on such esoteric wordplay and punchline concepts that I haven't yet included a lyric about, like, the most important thing that happens. A lot of other rap battle creators go out of their way to not do that because they don't want their writing influenced by seeing other people's work. Matter of preference, I suppose

Eddiefrb

if I haven't posted an instrumental yet I don't have it anymore. I foolishly did not start extensively archiving everything I make including instrumentals until the past year or so. Some of the battles probably never even had an instrumental exported. Your best bet is looking in the credits of the battle you want the beat for, finding the producer and looking through their catalogue to see if you can find it

Blindman

Have you been featured on other rap channels?

Eddiefrb

It's a boring answer but my top 3 would all be ERBs. I've seen some discourse around the quality of "fan channels" vs ERB themselves and it makes me laugh because my opinion has pretty much always been that ERB at its best wipes anything anyone else (including me) has done by a long shot. I also rarely watch rap battles more than once now, I get my inspiration from other stuff. As for the 3 ERBs I don't have a literal list but 3 that come to mind as favourites are Alexander the Great vs Ivan the Terrible, East vs West and William Wallace vs William Shakespeare

Ash Pancakes

AvA stuff: 1. How do you choose a voice actor for a character if multiple people have already voiced them in the past? 2. I remember you saying you won't do anymore danganronpa battles again, will it ever have a chance to come back? (like when 2x2 releases) Also, are there any other franchises that you would not be doing rap battles on anymore? 3. How feasible is it to get the actual voice actors for characters rn? 4. When are we getting the People's Champ 2 and will we be getting monthly newsletters again? 5. How close were you to scrapping a currently released battle/What was the furthest progress you have made on a battle and decided to scrap it? 6. i crave more tadc battles 7. On average, how long does one episode of AvA take to make? 8. Will all battles from now on be animated? random stuff: 1. which country are you supporting on the world cup 2. do you like chickens 3. do you like the netherlands

Eddiefrb

I mean biases are innate they're going to exist at some level regardless. But, no, it has never consciously factored in to a project's writing. I honestly do not care whatsoever who wins. For some reason some people think I purposely make a character lose or something because I like the other character more. I don't even think about who's winning when I'm writing it, I just give each character everything at their disposal and focus on making the most entertaining video instead of the most artificially balanced one. If I write a battle like Pomni vs Jevil where Pomni abstracts it's not because I hate Pomni it's because I wanted to tell a story and make a cool video. I know a lot of viewers really do care about the "who won" angle, so I have made a bit of an effort to balance the battles out a little better when I can, but... the "who won" outro isn't in my channel for a reason. I'm not really trying to use the medium that way

Eddiefrb

if there is a chapter 4, it will be in chapter 4

ArmacheddonVA

Are there any matchups you really wanted to do but just didn’t work out?

Eddiefrb

Yeah, I would say a lot. If the character is from a game I play the game. If a character is from a show I watch the show. If I'm already familiar I still rewatch/replay. Sometimes several times. I like to get immersed in the fan culture and familiarize myself with how fans of the source material feel about how the characters and world are represented. My goal is generally to always make something where a big fan of the property can watch it and feel heard and understood. Sometimes I put too much stock into compulsive/excessive research when I should just be generating line ideas. But, I consider it my due diligence. Part of the job. Can't complain about playing video games and/or watching cartoons for a living

MetaStarVA

Who are some specific characters on your radar for using, but don't have a matchup for?

Eddiefrb

I really want to do Toph vs Daredevil and even have a beat custom made for it but I have been unable to figure out the logistics of the video part so far. Either I spent a ludicrous amount of money to get it animated in great detail, or I make it a PNG project, which doesn't really represent the characters well. I'd consider it more shelved than scrapped, but it was supposed to be for chapter 3

RaccoonBroVA

Is there a possibility of incorporating live action/animation hybrid style videos in the future, like with Coyote vs ACME?

Eddiefrb

AvA 1. i pick the portrayal I like best. Or, if I don't like any portrayal, I outsource. it comes down to my personal taste 2. now that danganronpa is less oversaturated in the community and 2x2 seems to be on the horizon I might give it another go. I also have some ideas for a certain character in a battle that nobody else has done yet, and I have a matchup for that character, so maybe you'll see it after 2x2. who knows 3. honestly feasible for the indie properties but I intentionally don't because it's fan work and I don't want anyone to be tricked into thinking the battles are canon or endorsed in any way by the creators. the TADC cast being in every fan project created a LOT of problems behind the scenes. there's a reason they aren't doing it anymore 4. the truth is that I was going to launch people's champ 2 the same month I got demonetized. It took a few weeks for that to get resolved and by the time it was there were so many new Patrons that I decided to just independently greenlight the one I thought was going to win which was Caine vs Tenna. I'll do another people's champ but probably after chapter 3 as the lineup is finalized now. as for the newsletters, I stopped because the progress wasn't linear enough to have an exciting new batch of updates every single month. so instead I plan to just drop updates and teasers as they come 5. the only reason puss vs cat happened is because I was able to secure keyblade as puss. the project was in limbo for over 2 years prior and probably never would have been made if I didn't get him on board. hard to answer the second one but there are several album battles that I cut while finalizing the tracklist that went somewhere. not sure if i'll repurpose them yet or not 6. there is one more after caine vs tenna on the album 7. from conception to release the average is probably around a year but when expedited it is closer to 3 or 4 months random: 1. i'm canadian so 2. yes 3. never been but would love to

Will Spencer

Do you have plans on doing any Hellaverse (Hazbin and Helluva Boss) battles in the future?

Eddiefrb

yeah, a lot over the years. not so much any more these days because recording is a hassle with my current living situation and I'm still not super keen on my own voice. I did Berdly for Danii and Polka Dot Man for Teimunity earlier this year to help them both out cuz I think their channels are cool and deserve more attention. I don't advertise the guest appearances publicly though, cuz I don't write or direct any of it, I just lend my voice

Eddiefrb

feel free to ask at any point when it comes back to you

Eddiefrb

plans? not really. i have ideas. nothing set in stone. i don't really like hazbin hotel or helluva boss anymore (just not a fan of the direction the shows went in) but they're obviously huge and there's obviously demand so we'll see

Eddiefrb

I have plans to tackle live action for one very specific upcoming matchup but it won't be for a while yet

MusicVoiceOvers

I love the rap battle Alastor vs Siren Head and I really want to cover it one day. Do you remember the beat that was used in that battle (I believe it is public considering it was used in another rap battle made by GamingPlush64) by any chance?

Eddiefrb

business wise I should really be doing a poppy playtime battle but I have yet to find an interesting matchup for any of the most popular characters

Eddiefrb

i will but it is currently difficult to justify because for the same amount of money I could make an entirely new project and there are an unexpected amount of people with a huge affinity for the older 2020-2022 stuff that I think is trash but I guess people still enjoy. top personal candidates right now are ruby rose vs the mandalorian, denji vs wolverine and spinel vs bendy. jack vs sans and alastor vs siren head would also benefit from a reanimated but I would rather re-use the characters against someone else in a new battle than remake the matchup

carsfrankie

what is your biggest motivation when working on your projects as of right now? and what part of that motivation can you give to new creators wanting to make battles inspired from your work?

Eddiefrb

honestly (i'm sorry i'm going to break some hearts) object shows. I am open to watching an object show and trying my hand at making a battle but to be honest it is intimidating given that the osc is completely foreign to me as someone who not only never grew up with that stuff but also has no idea where to even start. it's always subject to change, though, i'm always looking into new things

Eddiefrb

LMAO well right now it's making money and being able to like save up to buy a house and pay rent and stuff. but creatively speaking I think my main goal in this stage of my career is push the genre in a direction that directs and pulls from actual hip hop more. an embarrassing amount of the community (including myself for many years) doesn't know the first thing about hip hop and I don't intend to get on a soap box and preach about it but it has started to both be noticeable (/neg) and rub me the wrong way now that I have done my homework and have been more immersed in the artform. we really have not even scratched the surface of what's possible in a rap format so far. so I want to make projects that demonstrate some of that potential. if you're a new creator, my biggest piece of advice is to grow a taste for hip hop or honestly any kind of "real music" in general. battles are fun, nerdcore is fine, video game music is great, all of that stuff is fine and has value, but if you are a serious musician you need to study the greats. there's no shame in starting basic - I started with eminem, then denzel curry, tyler the creator, kendrick, etc. still some of my most listened to artists. it completely changes your perspective on the entire process. I feel like my mindset while creating died and was reborn anew since around 2024 because I understood that I didn't understand anything at all for the past 8-9 years of my rap battle career

Eddiefrb

it's by anywaywell but I don't remember what it was called and I also don't know if it'd still be listed considering how long ago that was

MusicVoiceOvers

And one more question, how did you find DDLC which caused the Light Yagami vs. Monika rap battle?

carsfrankie

when i started to listen to hip hop from the beginning of this year, was when i started to get where you (along with counting other frb artists) get your influence from. and a few months was when i started to find my own genre related to hip hop, and got me addicted, and apart from just the rap battles i’ve seen lol. so now its like i have sort of a formula for when i want to one day, put my foot into making my own battles. with alot of different genres i can find and listen to while understanding how i can use it to help me with my own projects.

Kenben

I got a few questions I would like to ask about AVA. Do you have plans for some of the more lore heavy series (Sailor Moon, Fate, etc) Do you plan on having more surprise characters in AVA like Lucy Van Pelt? Have you ever had a project that you had and idea for, but scrapped it RIGHT before you was about to start working on it? Would you ever reuse a character in AVA? Also sidenote, but how have you been doing recently? I know the demonetization situation must've took a toll on you and I hope you doing way better now .

MusicVoiceOvers

Speaking of voice acting, how do people audition for rap battles?

Canary

hi eddie! is ramona vs snow white planned to be released (video) with the release of the album? and is omni man vs homelander making any progress since you said you are waiting for the boys to wrap up? hope my questions don't sound mean, just curious that's all!

Krusty

When is the album scheduled, will the album have fully edited videos and would you ever do a face reveal?

Krusty

Eddie you said if there is a chapter 4, does that mean you might stop making battles?

Eddiefrb

very late this year (Q4), yes every battle will have fully edited videos but not on launch, theyll come after, and not voluntarily but if my channel gets big enough im sure someone is gonna leak my face. i just value my privacy and dont think my appearance matters to my work but im a very average looking slightly fat white guy you are not missing much

Tess

since someone else asked about your vocal features for others, i was wondering how open u are with voice roles in general? do you consider yourself an available VA or are you very limited

Viro0z

anything u have voiced in other creator’s battles this year?

Tortilleli

What's your favorite matchup overall? It can be one you've already did or not

MandoMRB

1. What is your favorite Indie Game and why? 2. What’s your favorite character from pizza tower? 3. are there any updates on Zim vs Alien Hominid vs Among us

Muse

Do you have any interest to do voice work for non rap battles?

Grey Julius

How is ava the otter doing today

Diego Fox

Out of all the different franchises you’ve made battles with, which one is your favorite at the moment, and which one do you plan on making more battles for?

VERM1N4T0R

what happened to the old discord server? I wasn't there for that, will there ever be another one? and will you ever reuse a character for another battle? (not counting remasters)

Eddiefrb

i need distance between my audience and myself for my own mental health. moderating a server even if its just for patrons was stressing me out. never say never but if there is another discord server its unlikely ill be involved directly. and yeah, ive already re-used several characters in chapter 3

Eddiefrb

1. not sailor moon or fate specifically but yeah lots of upcoming projects use franchises with a lot of lore 2. yes but it won't happen often as I find it kind of tacky and only strictly beneficial if it adds something to the story or dynamic instead of just being surprising 3. most of my ideas fall into this category 4. yes, i have several times in chapter 3 alone already 5. better. thank you

Eddiefrb

reserving the right to refuse to answer the first one at the moment. omnilander has made progress but it will not come out this year because it is the chapter 3 finale and chapter 3 wont be finishing this year anymore. the final season of the boys changed the direction significantly (in a good way)

Eddiefrb

not open at all. most of the voice roles ive done in the past few years have been favours or cosigns. i've turned down some pretty high profile roles not because of anything personal but because I really don't enjoy recording very much with my current set up. im voicing more in AvA to make up for it

Eddiefrb

berdly for danii and polka dot man for teimunity

Eddiefrb

1. undertale is my favourite game of all time and deltarune will probably take that spot when its all said and done 2. i like peppino. i think he's funny and cool. also a big fan of the noise, if the peppino battle does well a noise battle in the distant future isnt off the table 3. it'll be on the album

Eddiefrb

i have a few times and the truth is im not very good at it (in my opinion) so it's not really a priority right now. voice acting is way harder than it looks. maybe one day

Eddiefrb

to be honest my favourite franchise of all time since i was a little kid is pokemon and toothless vs pikachu being the only real "modern" pokemon AvA is funny and something I should probably correct in the future. as far as which ones i'll make more battles for, all the most successful ones. i'll do more spongebob ones, more undertale/deltarune ones, more tadc ones probably, stuff that is sure to hit and i'm also a big fan of. but i will try to space it out so it's not crazy

Eddiefrb

i don't have any immediate plans to stop but i have no intentions of making battles forever. i would like to do a chapter 4 but i still need to finish chapter 3 first. not counting my chickens before they hatch

Canary

aaa gotcha! excited for both projects eddie! hope everything goes well

AyJaBe

Hi Eddie hope you’re doing well! I’d just like to ask 2 questions 1. Do you have any more anime battles planned for this year. 2. Have you ever played Persona or interested to. Have a great day Eddie ^^

Ash Pancakes

hypothetically what if caine vs tenna didnt win the peoples champ? will it still have been made?

john tomfoolery

Is there any matchups that you thought of but couldn’t use because it was two animation characters or no animation characters

Eddiefrb

1. nah, sorry 2. never played but probably will one day, it seems like something id enjoy you have a good day too!

Joel Parraway

Have you ever considered using an SML character for the channel

Krusty

I know I already asked a question but why aren’t you active in the frb community? I remember you doing game shows with frb now you don’t any of that stuff anymore

Eddiefrb

while the success of the channel has been a major blessing that I am very grateful for, it became untenable to continue acting like just another random member of the community like I had been for almost a decade prior. community spaces are always full of new, younger fans and aspiring creatives that are greatly inspired by my work, and sharing those spaces casually fuels unhealthy parasocial relationships that I did not want to encourage. i'm 23 now, a lot of the most active people in the community are teenagers, it's just not my "hangout spot" anymore. im still on good terms with pretty much all of the other creators from the past 5-ish years and I have a couple of newer creators I respect and have collaborated with (like teimunity) but i'm largely keeping to myself and my close friends these days. it's better for my mental health and I feel it is better for the community at large if the biggest figures keep a healthy distance

Tess

second question, if it's something you personally care about, who do you think won your own battles? you can obv answer as many and which ones you find most interesting to talk about but im especially curious about pomni vs jevil and caine vs tenna

A fidg

What happened to the old DHMIS beat?

Nugget

How long does it usually take you to wright the lyrics for a battle

Ty Guy

I saw recently that you removed the intro battles from your battles from Puss vs. Cat to Pomni vs. Jevil. Could you please tell me why you did this?

Eddiefrb

as cool as it is, it's basically a 15 second unskippable ad before the video starts. without getting too technical, it destroys viewer retention and the videos are being heavily hindered performance wise because of it. also makes the videos less loopable. it's a better choice for the business

Christian Koppinger

Do you think you'd ever consider doing an AVA with Omori? Just curious.

ChriSka

When do you suppose we could get instrumentals for other rap battles, like Toothless VS Pikachu or Rick VS Glados?

Dr. Awkward

I know the album's tracks won't immediately have animated music videos, but will there at least be an easy way to read the lyrics? These battles are amazing, but if you can't read the lyrics it can be difficult to understand what's being said.

Eddiefrb

yes, there will be lyric videos that drop with the album and the main album video will have lyrics too

Ty Guy

Will the other 3 or 4 releases (excluding one or two of the battles on the album that might be released this year) be bonus battles or part of Chapter III?

MandoMRB

Do you have any tips for people who wants to start making rap battle videos?

Mang0Things

Hey Eddie! I have a few questions: #1: What is the process you have to go through to make these Rap Battles possible? #2: Has it ever taken you over a year to finish a battle? #3: What Editing software do you use? #4: Have you ever animated a rap battle yourself?

Rougnms

Eddie can you please get off all the auto chapters for Tobias

黄金黑帮

Hello, I’m a fan of yours from China. Have you considered doing a *Brawl Stars* rap battle? It’s one of my favorite games.

Tobiasblox3

Hello im a new member here

RIPTOCHETO

What do you think about setting up a fan suggestion box for rap battles? It would be awesome if the community could submit their matchup ideas and break down the concepts behind them to show how they could actually work.

AyJaBe

how has progress been on the already announced battles? Can we get an update soon on them

cryzteria z.

is there any official way we can just throw you hypothetical matchups as a request, for instance something like; ... draco malfoy (hp) vs diamond tiara (mlp) HYPOTHETICALLY.
