End of the Samurai | Japanese History | Extra History Complete

📜 After you've learned about the End of the Samurai, head over to Kickstarter, where our 2026 "History Happens Every Day" Calendar is available for preorder! - https://bit.ly/ExtraHistory2026Calendar Japan’s samurai era didn’t end with a whisper—it ended with rebellion, war, and betrayal. When foreign powers forced Japan to open its borders, everything changed. Merchants gained power, the Emperor took a political stance, and old systems crumbled. As unrest spread, the infamous Shinsengumi rose to keep order—but peace was short-lived. The Boshin War erupted, and when the dust settled, the samurai found themselves cast aside by the very empire they helped create. Led by Saigo Takamori, they made one final, dramatic stand as Japan transformed into a modern nation. We really enjoyed revisiting this series and getting to implement the viewer feedback that Rob had previously only been able to address in Lies. I’d like to see an episode about Christian persecution in Japan one day. Also, like him or not David Ben-Gurion was a massively impactful figure, maybe cover early Zionist figures up to him and the establishment of the State of Israel. Try your best to be impartial, there’s way too much pro-Palestine bias to the point where historians leave out key facts to vilify Israel more. For example, Armchair Historian made it seem like there were no Jews in Palestine before the settlement, when they’ve been there since Rome just in smaller numbers. Also, the local Arabs didn’t call themselves Palestinians until Arafat, and Arabs committed massacres against Jews before Israel was formed that spiraled the violence in Palestine. After Israel became a state Arabs countries across the globe expelled all their Jews.

I don't see any other way to contact you, so here goes: I just finished re-watching "Path to Pearl Harbor" -- fascinating to me because we lived there for over three years when my husband was a junior naval officer. We visited the Arizona Memorial when his parents came to see us; his father served in the Navy during WW II. Sorry you didn't have time to mention the Japanese-American servicemembers from Hawaii who served in the European theater, such as Senator Inouye. BTW, what do you think of the book AT DAWN WE SLEPT, which you didn't mention in the "Lies" episode? I would LOVE to see you do a series on the U.S. postwar occupation of Japan. I once read a memoir (whose title I can't recall) by an Army wife about living there during the occupation. U.S. military personnel were required to employ Japanese servants to support the economy.
