Prometheus - Origins - Extra Mythology - #1

Let's start at the primordial beginning. The first "peoples" on the earth were Cyclops and Titans. Prometheus was one of these titans, and in fact just one of two remaining after an unfortunate conflict with, you guessed it, Zeus... Huh.... I was surprised to hear Aphrodite came to being before Zeus! Oh heck yeah! A collaboration with Gaijin Goombah somewhere down the line maybe? Which reminds me, I have to look up some Korean stuff!

Martin Verran

All I saw was a Black Video and the Sound of Matt's Voice. Something's gone wrong.

BrandonC

Man, I didn't realize this would be a whole new series. Amazing guys. This is exactly the type of content that makes me support this channel. Keep up the good work.

Jacob Ashton

YEAH! *Explodes with excitement*

Question: if we are patrons here, do we still get the patron stuff for extra-mythology or do we need to be patrons there as well?

Kitteninja

Wouldn’t Aphrodite be a Titan then? Also, if humans weren’t made yet, where did the Heroes come from?

Jonathan Luoto

I hope you at some point will talk about how trying to make a chronology out of Greek mythology is a completely useless task, since you'll just find several inconsistencies where people lived before they were born, or humans fighting monsters before humanity existed etc. Believe me, I have tried.

Aphrodite's place is very nebulous because some stories say she's actually the daughter of Atlas, and the Illiad puts her as the daughter of Zeus and a mortal.

Amazing video guys; narration was stellar and that artwork had me absolutely enthralled. 10/10

I would like to submit this story for the midnight society

So wait, how was Heracles the son of Zeus and a mortal if Promethues hadn't made mortals yet?

Cindy Franklin

Ooh, love Mythology! But I can't really afford to be part of that Patreon as well as the Extra History. :/

Just to clarify--this episode (and the next 3 that will air about Greek mythology) were originally a milestone goal for the Extra History fans, and so we are sharing these early-access episodes on both communities as a way to say thanks. However, the episodes we produce later will remain as early-access rewards only to the Extra Mythology community.

In a short answer: Hercules was the child of Zeus and a human from the age of heroes who were different from the iron age people (which is what we would be). The best comparison would be saying Heracles's mom was a Neanderthal while Prometheus made Homo Sapiens. (It's a rough comparison but hopefully it conveys the point.)

Bill Lemmond

`Wow. I'd never heard most of this. And now I see Lovecraft got some inspiration from Greek mythology. At least the Greek myth-makers didn't seem racist. Your telling suggests no one side was demonized. There were only winners and losers. And Zeus accepted the most different of beings as allies.
