Our theme for May & June is BREAKING THE TIMELINE—1930s and 40s

As you all know, we have a 100-year cutoff for our regular series—meaning that currently we only accept topics for vote if they take place before 1929. This is so we can get proper historical distance, and so we don't spend most of our time in the mid-to-late 20th century.

But what is a rule, if you don't break it every once in a while? We haven't had a sponsored episode for the 1930s or 40s for awhile, and it's feeling like time to revisit those crucial decades that brought us the Great Depression, the leadup to the Second World War, the beginning of the Cold War.

This topic vote will cover events that happened principally between 1930-1949, or historical characters who performed most of their notable actions then. Want to hear about the rise of Japanese militarism? The New Deal? The Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland? How about the Battle of Midway or Manhattan Project? Now's your chance!

Some notes about suggestions:

  • If a suggestion we encounter only has enough research material/production scope for a one-off episode instead of a full series, we file it in a separate list to reference later when we are planning to schedule a one-off episode between series (this is true for every survey we do).
  • Only one suggestion per person please! Multiple suggestions from the same person during any given survey period will be manually removed.

Suggest a topic for Extra History! (Breaking The Timeline)

Submit between now and 12:00 PM PT on Wednesday, June 9. Anything that happened or got substantially started before the year 1929 is fair game to suggest. We typically don't cover more recent events, unless we're working with sponsors who can provide more documentation about that historical topic. Except not this time!

Once you realize just how Nazi the Olympic opening ceremony actually is, I imagine a lot of people will want to boycott that one

FarEasternMyth

I was going to suggest this. It feels like with so many different factions involved, there is no shortage of material to use.

Cracking the Enigma code was mine

General Luigi

I suggested that, too (sort of). The civil war would presumably be a part of the series I suggested, but I'm also interested in the fall of the monarchy and the problems facing the Second Spanish Republic that ultimately led to the Civil War.
