Love the romance of marrying for love but history does not tend to be very fond of romance.

Rasputin was known to the royal family but how exactly did he manage to get so close to them? There was a lot at work, and the royals were not in the best position. They married for love, but neither was exactly suited for the throne at the time. And their only male heir had hemophilia. How could they refuse this holy man who seemed to work wonders not only for their son but also eased Alexandra's anxiety? Unfortunately, the comfort he brought would be short-lived. ___________ Support the people who make this show, vote for future Extra History topics, and get great perks at our Patreon! http://bit.ly/EHPatreon Subscribe & ! to our channel on YouTube at http://bit.ly/SubToEC Got more info about Extra Credits on our website at http://extracredits.site/ Grab your Extra Credits gear at the store! http://extracredits.store/ ___________ Thanks for participating in this week's discussion! If there was such a thing as a Royal Chicken, what would you imagine it would look like? [Me, I'd just imagine a huge Chicken with a massive comb on its head]

I hope you'll discuss the Khlysty in "Lies." It looks as though some people in the comments section (myself included) didn't know what Mr. Krol said around the 8:10 mark. I presume there was going to be a more in-depth explanation of them that simply didn't make the final cut?

I think in French bon appetite is pronounced 'appeti' to English ears. 1876 3rd July In the Empire of The Great Qing, the First Chinese Railway, Known as the Woosung Road, is Opened, Running from Shanghai to Wusong. At this Time, the Qing have to Import Egyptian or British Locomotives, but this will change within the next Two Decades. 1887 In the Russian Empire, Grigori Rasputin Marries Praskovya Dubrovina after a Courtship of Several Months. She will Remain in Pokrovskoye throughout Rasputin’s later Travels and will Remain Devoted to him until his Death. In the Inca Empire, Inca Scientist Sulca Yanac has Abandoned the “Wireless Telegraphy” Experiments he had been Conducting in Favour of a more Promising Area of Research: Radio Waves. 1888 In the Inca Empire, Sulac Yanac Successfully Transmits a Message in “Universal Telegraph Code” [also Known as “Morse Code” after its Inventor, Samuel Morse, who Devised the Code in 1837] using Radio Waves over a Distance of 20 Miles. 1895 In the Russian Empire, by 1895, the Grand Duchy of Finland is Seething with Discontent; the Tsar’s Decision to Pursue a Policy of ‘Russification’ is deeply Unpopular and in the Years before the Fifth Great War have already Provoked small Petitions, Passive Resistance and similar Tokens of Dissent. What the Russian Authorities find so Reprehensible about Finland is its ‘Separatism,’ that is, Autonomous, Political, Economic and Cultural Institutions that Differ Sharply from the Russian Model. These have always held the Danger of Encouraging Alternative ways of Thinking elsewhere in the Empire, Including the Ethnically Russian Lands. There is also the need for Security. The Diplomatic Shift to a Pro ~ French Policy has Shifted Russian Security Concerns to Central and Northern Europe; as Finland lies so Close to Saint Petersburg it is the Key to Russia’s Northern Border. 1900 In the Byzantine Empire, Grigori Rasputin Claims to have Walked as far as Mount Athos in Greece ~ the very Heart of Eastern Orthodox Monastic Life ~ around this Time. In the Russian Empire, by this Time, Grigori Rasputin has Developed a small Group of Followers, Primarily Family Members and other Local Peasants. Building a makeshift Chapel in Efim’s Root Cellar ~ Grigori is still Living in his Father’s Household at this Time ~ the Group Joins him here for Prayer on Sundays. These Meetings become the Subject of much Suspicion and Hostility from the Village Priest and from the other Villagers. It is Rumored that Female Worshipers are Ceremonially Washing him before Prayer, that the Group Sings strange Songs, and even that Grigori has Secretly Joined the Khlysts [a Banned Religious Sect whose Rituals are said to Include Self ~ Flagellation and Sexual Orgies.] 1904 17th March In the Japanese Empire, a little over a Month after the Declaration of War against Japan, Elements of the “Eastern Detachment” under the Command of Major Yevgeny Miller Cross over the River Tumen and into Northern Korea. For Two Days they Face no Resistance as they March down the Peninsular’s Eastern Coast. The Russian Empire is Famous for its “Stanniks.” A Ragged Army of Holy Men and Mystics Endlessly Traverse the Empire, Wearing Tatterd Robes and with Staff in Hand. People of every Class do it, Travelling in Groups and Occasionally Practicing Self ~ Mortification. During the Winter Months, some go Barefoot, Wearing Chains around their Legs and Rejoicing at the Trail of Blood they leave in the Snow. Personally, Rasputin finds Chains Distracting; instead, he tries Wearing the same Shirt for a Year without taking it off: Walking to Sites through the Heat and the Cold, Dodging Brigands, and Meeting Fellow Pilgrims.
