This week we are painting an autumn forest path, layered foliage, bare branches, fallen leaves, and two pumpkins nestled in the grass. But this tutorial is also a brush creation tutorial: along the way, we create three custom Procreate brushes from scratch that make building the scene a lot faster and more interesting.

The three brushes we make are a bush leaves brush, a foliage brush, and a grass brush. We build each one from a hand-drawn shape, set up the spacing, jitter, rotation, grain, and color dynamics, and then put them straight to work in the scene. I have attached all three brushes to this post so you can use them directly if you prefer.

The key idea in this tutorial is combining custom brush strokes with hand-drawn details. The brushes give you that lovely layered texture quickly, and then you go in with a regular brush by hand to add plants, branches, and details that keep it from looking generic. That combination is really the secret to making a scene like this feel alive.

The color palette we'll be using is attached to the post (as always, make sure to use a browser like Safari or Chrome when downloading, the Patreon app won't let you download attachments unfortunately).
