VIDEO TUTORIAL: Painting a Space Landscape (Patreon)

Here's a 2 hour+ video in which I will walk you through my process of painting this space landscape. Starting out with a thumbnail sketch, adding values, experimenting with color and then adding more and more details to the painting. 

I've added an overview of the references I used, some brushes, my working file (these are separate files, since all the layers didn't fit in one file) and a color palette. I'm sorry if the palette isn't of much use though, there aren't many colors in there, in case you want to use similar colors as I used, you can always color pick my painting.

Hello Flo! I know you said you uploaded the thumbnails in the working file, but when I download Space_Part_1.psd it shows a much further along illustration, not the thumbnail from the beginning. Am I missing something?

The thumbnail I used is in folder one at the top, the opacity is turned down.

I have only done a few of the easier tutorials, but the skills that Flo gives us really make it so much easier to tackle the more complex stuff. Even if it doesn't come out like you hope it is still hands on practice!

My favorite thing about these videos is that your paintings are often looking like mine near the beginning, haha. Kinda messy, blotched. Except I USED to get discouraged because I wasn't immediately seeing my goal. Seeing you ALSO go through that phase and keep adding detail and the end result really, really inspires me. Because it dawns on me that I can do X, Y, Z... it's just that its been mental this entire time.

That's great to hear Steven! I remember back when I was a wedding photographer it was an eye opener for me to see all the photos my favorite wedding photography duo shot in a day. So they showed all of the photos, not just the edited ones that made the final cut. I realized they shot 95% crap, just to find that 5% gold ;) It made me feel better about my own way of working. With drawing and painting it's the same, I love watching others and their messy process, seeing that they can make mistakes as well.

Hey flo! I cant seem to find the thumbnail sketch that you used in the beginning of the video. I downloaded all of the files and all of them are just painted versions of the artwork much further along, and something that resembles an idea board, but no sketches. Can you help me find where’s it’s located? I’m new to how patreon works 😅 thank you!

Never mind! I found it inside of the PSD file I just had to uncheck all of the layers and only select the sketch layer in order to copy it and start from scratch! I’m slowly learning... lol

I really wanna do this but I have some problems. If I wanna open a new canvas I don’t have „Large 4K“. I guess it may be no problem so I made an own canvas with 5760 x 3240 px. I followed your tutorial and than I got the next problem. I am only allowed to make 6 layers. Do you know how to change that? Or does somebody else know? I have absolutely no idea and I really really wann try this drawing. :(

The amount of layers you can use depends on your device. I'd recommend a smaller canvas size if you want to use more layers.

I you have a youtube app on your tv then you could use that I guess. Or you can open the video in a secondary window on your ipad 🤔

Values are very important in a painting. Working in just values first, enables me to create a good balance in lights and darks. You could also start in color and check your values by switching to grayscale.

I like using this technique when I'm not using a specific reference or when I want to stray from a reference more. I also like to switch up and experiment with different techniques though.
