Hi everyone! I could really use your help 😊

Everyday I get a lot of emails and DMs through multiple platforms with often the same questions. It takes me at least an hour a day to answer all of these messages, so I thought it would be handy to make something like a website article with common issues and their solutions. That way I can redirect people to that page.

Now I would like to make an overview of common issues and their possible solutions. There are often issues downloading swatches or brushes for instance. Could you tell me what issues you have run into in the past and how you solved them? What software or browser do you use?

So it's all about technical issues that are actually unrelated to actual drawing 😉 I want to make a video about drawing/Procreate issues and how to fix them too, but I'll be making another post asking for your input for that soon 👍

Thanks in advance for all of your help. You are the best! 😁

My biggest problem is downloading brushes from your different sites. Some work but others don't. Most times I manage to fluke it but when I try with another lot using the same procedure it doesn't always work. Just trying to think of one from the other day - it was through another platform that I hadn't used before - I'll have to look it up and get back to you. It was the watercolour brushes from your Treasure chest post. When the post unzipped the file names were a big long number with 6 parts - AuthorPicture. QuickLook, Signature, Brush.archive, Grain.png and Shape.png.

Art with Flo

Thank you Maureen! And what did you do to make them unzip? It should just be a .brushset file 🤔

Hi Flo! I had some trouble with downloading your brushfiles via Google Chrome. I just switched to Safari and everything worked fine! Greets, Anja

I've had no issues with brushes or any other content on either Windows or IOS systems here in the USA.

hello flo i have been a patreon master class for two days. it is difficult to load your brush from google too big files. on the Mac it worked but without a virus scan. I also have to search a lot to get the videos that interest me. nevertheless i will stay patreon because you make great videos. this is from google translator because i can't speak english. I live in Germany. many greetings petra

I have found that the Patreon application does not work for downloading on the iPad. For downloading swatches, brushes, etc. use the Safari browser to access the Patreon site, and download them through your browser. Save them to Files on your iPad, then when you open them in Files they will automatically be unzipped and added to Procreate.

I haven't used the Apple ecosystem since 1981, so that is where most of my problems arise. I have ben able to download the brushes and swatches after I figured out Apple's way of doing things. I usually download everything on my windows computers with the Goggle Browser and then transfer everything over using a SSD to the new iPad. I offer a suggestion as this good idea grows. Categorize answers, update answers as software changes. Yesterday, I watched you explain some copy and paste operations which I didn't find in the current Procreate 5 and it took awhile to figure it out or a workaround. If you have the time, linking your answers to a specific video or a point within a specific video can be useful. When you think there is a need for a written procedure as in a blog, each step should be a single operation and not multiple operations. When embedding pictures ensure they are readable at least on an iPad. There are many instructional design techniques, but these are a good point to start thinking about. Your videos are very good and I think this effort can be just as useful. Good luck!

I have all Apple products—iPhone/MacBook Pro/iPad. I’ve never encountered any problems when downloading brushes, tutorials etc. ....only once with a PSD file (I think that was the parrot) but I believe Flo had some difficulty uploading it. She. It was

Laura F

sorry about that...hit return too fast🤦🏻‍♀️ Sh

Laura F

ooops,,, I did it again. Sorry. ANYWAY....Flo did fix the problem at her end and then the download went well. I always use iZip Pro to open up and save all my downloads and files. Works perfect each time. I’ve never used any other software app for the process of downloading art files. And yes, I’d love a Newsletter or website for any quick reference/answers to questions that the Patreon community may have...it would be an invaluable resource. Hope this helps. (And again, sorry for my trigger fingers in sending these texts...maybe tooooo much coffee this morning 😉😂)

I like your idea. These are the things I worked thru this first 10 days with Procreate and iPad Air 4

• Procreate 5 References • Differences between Procreate 4 and Procreate 5 ○ Yesterday I found the copy/paste examples to be different in Procreate 5 compared to the Red Lighthouse video • Creating Procreate brushes • Organizing Procreate brushes & brushsets ○ Create brushset ○ Adding a brush to a brushset • Downloading brushes & brushsets ○ To windows machine and transfer to SSD ○ Directly to iPad • Importing brushes and brushsets from SSD to Procreate • Download Swatches (via Windows machine & via iPad directly) • Set a Swatch to be default (top when in Disc or Classic views) • Considerations when using an 11" iPad and the YouTube video is on a 12" iPad • Creating a Canvas ○ Set size ○ Set DPI ○ Set Color profile ○ Set background color ○ Input a Title ○ Turn off/on video recording • Differences in Layer types and when to use them

Struggled a bit with downloading your water colour brush set, but sorted it now. Had to revert to a Mac as iPad just wouldn’t cut the mustard. 1. Click on the provided link, all 73 brushes are downloaded to Google drive. 2. There does not seem to be a way to import this brush set via Procreate - selecting it from Google drive isn’t an option. I could not find a way to copy/paste/send this brush set file to ‘folders’ on an iPad from Google Drive 3. The fix for me was to drag the brush set to the iCloud on my MAC - from the Google drive 4. I then simply opened Procreate on my iPad, selected brushes and then import. Navigate to iCloud (via files on the iPad) and select the brush set. Watercolour brush set now appears in Procreate. Sure there must be a way to do everything via the IPad. I just could not see it. Hope this helps

i found it to be easier downloading the utensils by using the split screen option. i’ll have my procreate on the right hand side and patreon on the left hand side. I also found out that i have a MUCH easier time downloading swatches, images, brushes if i use Patreon through the safari and not the app itself. By doing this when i click the link for X to download it it ports straight over to procreate. Hopefully this could help others too! i’ve had no issue since doing this.

Quinn

i also did it like this when downloading your treasure chest set! no issues whatsoever.

Hi Flo, I don't really have too may technical issues. Downloading directly onto my iPad seems pretty reliable. Something that you might like to investigate is an application called Textexpander from Smile software. It allows you to create text files that can be triggered by a few keystrokes. For example, if you are always explaining a specific topic, create a textexpqnder snippet and then whenever you need it just type in the shortcut and up pops your text. It can be as simple as your name, email address, or a long complex response...

Art with Flo

That sounds very interesting Laurie! That could be a great time saver, thank you

Hi Flo - I don’t have any problems downloading your files - I download them using safari and then just click on them from my download folder - if they are zipped my iZip pro app will unzip them in the download folder, then when I click on the file .brush set file it automatically imports into Procreate. I love your brushes and your videos. You are a really good teacher and very conscientious. Thank you!

If your Apple Pencil has problems responding, check the nib, sometimes it comes unscrewed during drawing or coloring. Lost 20 minutes trying to figure this out yesterday!

Art with Flo

Thanks so much John! In the article I will only be discussing technical issues that are mostly outside of Procreate though. I have made an elaborate explanaroty video at Skillshare about all the features in Procreate and I've also already made an entire article about installing brushes. I get a lot of questions about downloading, unzipping and transferring in general.

FAQ for Flo: when setting up canvas, is there a way to change the canvas size after adding art to the canvas? Also, what does the pixel number convert to in inches or meters?

Tali Radke

Hi Flo! When downloading the brush packs, I had to end up loading them one by one from my Files app to Procreate, is there a quicker way?

Lou Barela

When I use Patreon the download buttons often don’t respond e.g. palettes, brushes. Another thing I would like to have is more controllable Forward and Back buttons. I always have to review your instructions which are very good by the way, and it’s difficult to go back and forward in small segments. The compatibility between Patreon and iPad seems to need a lot of improvement. I could not open the Tiger lesson even when it said unlocked. Maybe I missed something I should have known. Your pace of teaching, the completeness of your instruction is exceptional. You dont assume the learner knows how to do any step and that is really helpful when I am trying things new to me. Thank you.

I just got new Ipad Pro Im still having Color Palette problems Mine looks so much lighter than yours. I even put it on sRGB IEC6 1966-2.1 Color Profile Even my number don't look right under one section Physical width stays at 8.3333" yours says different number 212 in new video?

Carolina

Hi FLO. Can you suggest an ideal canvas size for portraits and the best format to use when you want to post it on Instagram since it decreases the quality and details can’t be seen. Thanks

Naomi

I had an issue with the number of layers. In the Stylized Landscape Illustration I reached the maximum of layers for the canvas size on my iPad (I have an iPad Air 3). But I was able to fix it and gain more layers by resizing the drawing to make it smaller and cropping the canvas.

Art with Flo

Perhaps mine is set to centimeters in stead of inches. As long as you stick to the same pixels, you're fine. As for the colors, perhaps it has something to do with your iPad settings, like true tone or something :S

Art with Flo

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately I can't control the way YouTube and Patreon work and add more controllable Forward and Back buttons. The Tiger lesson is an older lesson, Eager Learners have access to the videos of the current month and previous two months, so the Tiger lesson is locked. As for downloading palettes and brushes, that doesn't work in the Patreon app unfortunately, so you'll have to use a browser.

Hi! When I import png files to procreate, an image with a transparent / checkered board background, how can I get rid of this background and use the image? Thanks! ;)

Simone Ribeiro

I think my issue is very simple. Sometimes i follow a your tutorial but my colors don't end up like yours. Why ?

Martha Axford

Hi Flo... what gesture controls do you use? What are your favorite

Art with Flo

You might be using a different color profile for your canvas

Art with Flo

I don't use a lot actually, just undo, three finger swipe and three fingers down 😅

Donna Hut

Do you have transcripts of your videos available? If so, how to get them?

Art with Flo

I don't, but you did get me thinking. Putting the videos and transcripts on my website might be interesting 🤔

Amber Frisby

I just want to thank you so much for all that you do! I love following your tutorials! I have tried to follow a few other peoples tutorials and they don’t talk or give directions like you do. They just show what they are doing which isn’t very helpful! Thanks again and I’m so excited for the next one!

Sarah-Jayne Williams

At this point in time my biggest issue is watching the videos I can’t make them full screened and every time I try to pause or play the video I often end up skipping back in the video losing my place. But I don’t know if that’s something you can fix or just the Patreon app that’s the problem!

Art with Flo

The Patreon app is pretty bad unfortunately. I always recommend using a browser like Chrome or Safari and just log in at patreon.com, that works way better.

Hello Flo, I don’t understand how to use a reference photo like you do in your videos, because if I just open a secondary window for example from photos library in procreate (not using import), this window cover my tools and I’m not able to understand how I can resize this new window just to be able to use the tools.. I only able to slide it from right to left or hide (if I hold it on the left this cover up size/opacity tools, if I hold on the right the reference photo hide palettes/brushes Don’t know if You understand what I mean, but anyway thank you so much!

Art with Flo

Make sure you snap it to the side of the screen, it sounds as if you have a hovering screen. If you drag it all the way to the left or right, it should snap to the side.

Sara Campana

Ok I’ll try!! Thank you Flo
