In this intermediate to advanced tutorial I will show you how you can create a realistic looking hamburger. I've added a short breakdown of all the steps and an image of the final layer overview. I hope you find this helpful! Have fun painting your own hamburger 😊
Canvas size: 3000 x 4000
The Steps
0:00 - 16:00 : The first step in the process is creating a sketch, we'll do this by using the chalk pencil. I created two sketches, a rough sketch first and then a more detailed sketch next.
16:00 - 21:00 : Next we'll create a background for our hamburger, on two layers. One for the black background (with a slight texture) and one layer for the wood. You can use Gaussian blur to slightly blur the edge of the wood.
21:00 - 23:00 : We'll use the freehand selection tool to make a selection of the hamburger (on a new layer) and fill this with a base color.
23:00 - 37:00 : Set the layer with the hamburger base color to alpha lock and start adding more color to the hamburger, using the basic Flo brush.
37:00 - 1:11:00 : We'll work our way from the bottom of the hamburger to the bottom, adding more detail, mostly using the basic Flo brush. We'll also use some textured brushes to add texture to the top bun for instance.
1:11:00 - 1:14:00 : After adding more detail to the hamburger, we'll add some more detail to the wood as well.
1:14:00 - 1:20:00 : Time for the final detailing! We'll start by adding the seeds on a separate layer on top of the hamburger layer. We'll use the Fineliner brush to create these seeds. After adding the seeds, we'll go back to the hamburger layer and add some drop shadows to add to the realism. Finally we'll add some highlights to the seeds using the Lighten Line brush and setting the seeds layer to alpha lock.
1:20:00 - 2:03:00 : We'll move down and add the final details to the rest of the hamburger. Mostly switching between the Lighten Line, Darken Line and Standard Blender. Be sure to keep an eye on the edges and add crisp edges around the lettuce and cheese for example.
2:03:00 - 2:10:00 : Finally we'll add more detail to the wood, we'll use texture brushes and the Darken Line brush.
Final Layer Overview
I have added the reference image, color palette and brush set with all the brushes that were used. I've also added a JPEG image with the four different steps in the process, from sketch to finished painting, for your reference.
