Learn to Sketch! - Lesson 1 - Sketching Essentials (Patreon)

This is the first lesson in the Learn to Sketch series! In this first lesson we'll start with the basics - Geometric Shapes! We'll also discuss why you would want to sketch and how to improve your sketching skills.

We'll focus on recognizing and sketching out the basic shapes like cubes, cilinders, pyramids, etc. You can practice recognizing these shapes even when you're not even drawing!

I've added two sketching exercises, both in Procreate file format and PSD file format. Of course you can also use your own references to do these exercises (the photos I used are from Shutterstock and can be used for practice purposes only).

One question, if I wanted to upgrade to the highest level (and I paid a year in advance) what would happen? Do I add on just the extra amount to make it up to full membership? You need to download the .Procreate files at the bottom of the post and do the same exercises as shown in the lesson 1 video.

ok, I'm watching the video on my windows desktop with my iPad adjacent to it. So....how do I integrate them? How do I get the files under the video on my desktop to open in procreate app on my ipad? Download them to google drive on my desktop and open them in procreate on my ipad from google drive on my ipad?

Yes, that's definitely a way to do that. Unless you have a Macbook for instance, then you can use AirDrop. Another option would be to go to patreon.com on your iPad and download the files directly on your iPad.

I must admit I cheated a bit with wooden block exercise. I just couldn’t get the feel of sketching the wooden blocks on my iPad. For the first image of blocks I ended up turning on the grid lines. That still didn’t help as much as I thought it would. Then I decided to outline on top of the blocks to gain some muscle memory and get a feel of how the shape feels while drawing on the iPad. That was the trick for me! When I attempted to draw the wooden shapes again it was much better. By the time I made it to the second pile of blocks to draw it was much easier! I didn’t even have to trace the image first!

I took advanced art classes and was pretty good, but now I have a distortion in one eye which makes it very difficult to determine straight lines and spatial areas. I can’t hang a frame without a level. So doing these is very difficult without using the help from the app. But I’m trying :)

Welcome to the world of drawing! I don’t recommend a specific way of holding your pencil because everyone’s grip can be a bit different, and it’s important to find what feels comfortable for you. That being said, one key tip is to make sure your hand stays relaxed. Keeping a light, easy grip will help you avoid tension and give you more control over your strokes. This makes drawing for longer periods more comfortable, too! Experiment with different grips and see what works best for you. Most importantly, keep your hand relaxed and have fun with the process!

I wish I knew its hard for me Try opening your IPAD in you tube, find her, FLO, and look for the same instructions on You Tube and save on ipad . Then open up the correct lesson and try to go from there

The chalk pencil is part of the treasure chest brush pack (you can get it through freefromflo.com) but you can also use the Sketch it brush, the Flotastic Sketcher or any other sketching brush you like of course 👍🏻

Hi! I get a double audio line. One start when I open the site without playing the video and one when i start the video. They are both the same. Does anybody know how to stop the patroen audio? I can't use the site like this.

How strange! I have never heard of this. You could try opening the video in YouTube (by clicking the Youtube logo) and then closing Patreon 🤷‍♀️

I'd just move on to the next lesson once you have finished the exercises. If after some lessons you find you struggle with a certain part, you can practice that more. Try to vary though, you need to keep it interesting and fun for yourself.
