This is the second lesson in the Learn to Sketch series! In this second lesson we'll focus on measuring. What and how can you measure? We'll look at some images and think about how to measure and compare lengths, angles and more. I'll tell you how I look at things and turn them into sketches.

I've added three sketching exercises, both in Procreate file format and PSD file format. Of course you can also use your own references and your own variety of shapes to do these exercises (the photo I used is from Shutterstock and can be used for practice purposes only).

Learn to Sketch - Lesson 2 - Measuring

In this second Sketching Class we will discuss different ways of measuring. How can you measure and compare, so you can get realistic and accurate proportions?

I’m so bad at this lol but I know I’ll improve

SpankMyBeef

Hi Flo, quick question. What is the optimal way to open and use the files you supply in procreate. Because using the Patreon app the files just wouldn't download, and using my pc to download and save it on a google drive file doesn't support the file they come in? just wondering how to go about it.

Art with Flo

You can ignore Google Drive saying that, it simply can't give a preview, you can hit the three dots and tell it to open in Procreate

punchbuggy66

is it a bad idea to use the grid guides while doing these practice exercises?

Dhanshree Lade

Hi Flo, how can i get access to your chalk pencil you use in these tutorials?

Dhanshree Lade

Thank you for getting back! I was able to find those brushes. Looking forward to going through your amazing tutorials. ❤️

Saleh

Well… I found out that I have pretty much twisted 3D sketching skills ~,~

Daniale Evans

The shape you didn’t know what it was called is a pentagon. A 5 sided figure is a pentagon. By the way, I have been looking for this kind of help for a long time! I have been following your drawings on YouTube for a while. So thank you.

Daniale Evans

How do you set the screen so that it won’t move if your hand touches it?

Art with Flo

The Apple Pencil has palm rejection, I don't think there's a special setting 🤔

MelonTrees

Hi Flo I was wondering what angle I should be setting my Ipad at to draw?

Art with Flo

Whatever angle you are comfortable with. Mine usually lays on a flat surface, but you could also use something like a sketchboard to keep your iPad in a comfortable angle.

MelonTrees

Awesome thank you I think I like mine at 15 degrees the best!

Hunter

when I touch my iPad I'm righting with my apple pen and my hand rubbing the screen how do I fix it

paranoid_humanoid

These tutorials are really good. Two days into practicing the exercises and I already see an improvement.

kekee1006

This exercise frustrates me for some reason. I just keep getting things too short.

Art with Flo

Try taking a break when you get frustrated. Over time you will definitely improve 💪🏻

Kristina Salmeron

I am left handed and I literally cut finger holes into a sock 1 for thumb and 2 for first 2 fingers. It helped me. But you can also buy a glove for iPad drawing too. I think I saw some on Amazon. I’m just too cheap to get one at the moment lol.

Carl Heffernan

Last exercise hard, first two, shapes right size just slight out, but last one can’t get angles right. Practice makes perfect tho

Art with Flo

Just keep it up! Practice makes perfect indeed 💪🏻

Carl Heffernan

is it best to stick with lesson till reasonable before moving on? Or will other lesson s help overall and come back later?

Art with Flo

I think the most important thing is to keep it enjoyable, moving on to next lessons can help keeping it fresh and they will definitely help overall. After a while you can go back to this lesson and see how you've improved 👍🏻

Sandy Park

Flo, thank you so much for creating quality classes like this. I am new to Procreate and just art in general, and I am enjoying every practices here so far. Thank you!

Art with Flo

Thank you! I'm happy you are enjoying my classes 😊

LibéBulle

Thank you ! I’ll try to exercise more when I don’t know what to draw 😊

Kasia

😍😍😍

June Sigler

This is fantastic! Your system of moving the reference picture over sketch is extremely helpful. After doing these exercises, it was obvious that I tend to add length to my shapes. Also, I never realized how important seeing negative space is. This stuff is so foundational. It’s going to make everything more fun when I master sketching 🙂👏🏻 (And the more homework the better! Thanks!!!) P.S. I love seeing that you aren’t perfect. Please never edit that out of your videos. It helps me feel ok with my own struggles

Art with Flo

Thank you so much, June! I'm happy you like it. I remember it was a real eye opener for me as well, when I first learned about looking at negative space. And of course I won't edit out my imperfections. I think it's very important to know that everyone struggles and everyone makes mistakes. Back when I was a wedding photographer I was a great fan of Two Mann Studios, a couple that did wedding photography as well. One day they had this live stream where they shared their entire process and showed all the photos that never made the final cut. It was great to see that they shot a lot of crap, that they weren't perfect and were constantly trying to improve their photos. It made me more confident I could reach that level as well.

Nina Murphy (Bella) AKA Janine Murphy

In the video you had mentioned that if we the people wanted more practice sheets you might think about making more? Well I am one of those who would love all the practice sheets you are willing to make. This is so awesome Hugs Nina

Art with Flo

Sure! I'll work on them and add some more soon :)

Donna Hut

Terrific exercises! Would love to have more! Thanks!

Art with Flo

Alright! I'll be sure to work on some more :)

Danica Watson

This has been a huge help, it has improved my artistic ability already!

AseelUU

Thank you .. can I ask you something ? When can I notice any difference in my progress ? And how can I know ! Thanks for your posts and videos are very helpful 🙏🏼

Art with Flo

When you do the feedback loop and check your sketch, you should see progress in the accuracy. You can also do the same drawing or sketch multiple times, make it today, then in two weeks and then in a couple of months for instance to check your progress. The speed in which you progress is different for everyone and also depends on how often you practice. Good luck!

AseelUU

Thank you so much 😍 .. my drawing will get better & better with your videos and lessons

Liz

Thank you Flo. Doing these exercises will really help.

Anna

I love this series! The explanations and exercises are really helpful.

Art with Flo

Thank you so much! I'm happy to hear you enjoy this series :D

Gryphon Ronas

I really like this tutorial, How to think instead of How to do. (psst.... pentagon) ;-)

Stefani Bennett

I can’t download the practice sheets is there another way to download them?

Art with Flo

Be sure to use a browser in stead of the Patreon app, unfortunately it doesn't let you download attachments

Stefani Bennett

Ok thank you did that and it worked 😊

Karen du Randt

Hi Flo. I’ve been doing your learn to sketch lessons and have some traditional art and sketching background but find the iPad screen too slippery. Do you use a protector with a paper like texture? Can you recommend one that doesn’t get scratchy from lots of use?

Art with Flo

I have never used a screen protector, I don't like the feeling and sound they make. It takes some time getting used to the slippery feeling of the screen.

Lisa Lee

Hi Flo, I just joined here. I would like to know how can I watch your sketching lesson and at the same time I could open the Procreate

Art with Flo

You can open the video in a secondary window. Just gently drag up from the bottom of your screen to open a bar with apps, you can drag the app you want to use for watching the video to the side of your screen to create a secondary window. I hope this helps!

Bookworm86

I hope that I don't sound silly, but how do I practice this? I've tried tracing over the shapes and also practicing using the shape exercises.....hope this makes sense.

Art with Flo

You just need to repeat the exercises, the more time you put into it, the more your skills will improve. It takes time and patience though.

Bookworm86

When should I start to see results? I know everyone is different, but just in general? Ty, love your tutorials!

Art with Flo

I really can't say, I never did an official study to find that out, I'm sorry

Bookworm86

That’s ok, ty for the reply!

Anna Sokolovskaya

Amazing series! thank you Flo. I will be more than happy to have more exercise sheets similar to these ones! Are you planning to have something similar for sketching people in different poses?

Art with Flo

Thank you! That topic is not something I have planned anytime soon, I'm sorry

Esther Leonard

I just finished this video and exercise. While I love to learn, found out I am terrible at this. Is this something I can get better with in time with practice?

Art with Flo

Yes, of course you'll get better! It can take some time though. I still make mistakes as well, but it all gets easier over time.

Rozie

I don’t understand how to measure….

Art with Flo

If you have trouble measuring, you can try using a grid first 👍🏻
