This is the third lesson in the Learn to Sketch series! In this third lesson we'll focus on line weight. How can you add variety to the line weight in your sketches and drawings and where should the light and heavy lines be? We'll practice adding line weight variation by sketching organic shapes like branches and rocks.

I've added two sketching exercise files, both in Procreate file format and PSD file format. Of course you can also use your own references or sketch from life! (the photos I used are from Shutterstock and can be used for practice purposes only).

Learn to Sketch - Lesson 3 - Line Weight

In this third Sketching Class we will discuss line weight. How can you vary line weight in your sketches and drawings and where should you put light lines and where should you create heavy lines? We'll practice sketching organic shapes like rocks and branches in this class.

These videos are so great and I would love to practice more. But I can’t seem to be able to unzip and use the exercise files. I looked in the community FAQ and even online for answers, but when I unzip the file, all I get is a bunch of .chunk files. Any suggestions?? ☺️

Art with Flo

The files shouldn't be unzipped, perhaps the program with which you open them doesn't recognize them and thinks they need to get unzipped. You could also ask your question in the Technical Issues section in the Flocreate Community, perhaps there's another member who can help you out 👍🏻

Hi flo! Thank you so much for these tutorials! I found you two weeks ago and I've been obsessed, I decided to become a member. I am excited to start my art journey! do you think you would ever be open to the idea of sharing the slideshows you use to talk about the subject? Im gathering a lot from what you're teaching, but i realize it may be a good idea for me to also have the notes.

Art with Flo

That's a nice idea Rosa, I'll be sure to think about it 👍🏻

Art with Flo

psd also works in Procreate, so it doesn't really matter which one you use 👍🏻

I am new to patreon and general, you're my first subscription. I can't for the life of me find where you're referencing these Procreate files. Can you help? Thanks! I've looked in the description of this post as well as the Youtube video direct link.

Art with Flo

The files are af the bottom of the post, just click them to download them. Do make sure to use a browser like Safari or Chrome though, the Patreon app won’t let you download attachments.

Gryphon Halley

Thank you bestie! At first glance I thought they were the hashtags. Found them :)

Culture Shock Apparel

For now and future reference how do I access the procreate files in a browser? When I open the lesson in YouTube it doesn’t list the files, only the option to purchase T-shirts. 😉

Art with Flo

You need to download the files from the Patreon post, not from the YouTube description 👍🏻

Hi Flo… as usual a wonderful class. Learning a lot. It would be great if you could include sketched images of the completed. So that I can compare it my finished work and learn from the mistakes. Thank you.

Art with Flo

I make mistakes too 😉 it's better to compare to the reference image than to my copy of it

Hi, I am so sorry but I cannot seem to open the layered procreate files (I am currently downloading a psd file, then import it into procreate, and of course, then it doesnt have the layers... procreate is running the latest version, and so is my iOS. Any idea what could be the issue? Thanks in advance!

Mirjam Jeter

I'll try using the browser to download the files, and then import into procreate. I'm assuming that works, if not, i'll report back in. I just assumed I could just click on the files and they'd be automatically opened in the appropriate app...

Mirjam Jeter

The browser download worked. All good here :)

Unfortunately I have an older iPad that doesn't support Apple pencil. I adjust my line weight by using the sliders for pen/brush size.

Anastasiia Petrych

Yey! New lesson! Thanks! What about the next lesson - are you going to include info about textures (hopefully)?

Art with Flo

It won't be specifically about textures, but I can definitely dedicate one of the classes to sketching/drawing different textures.

Anastasiia Petrych

Having some specific info about textures would be awesome, thanks!

Kathy Neale

Hi, would it be possible to have the reference pictures as images only? The iPad I am using is older and I get the notification, "Cannot import artwork, the artwork exceeds this device's capabilities. A more powerful device is required to import this file."

Art with Flo

Do you get the notification with both the procreate and psd file?

Kathy Neale

Just checked - same for the psd file.

Kathy Neale

Thank you, that has worked

Michael

What brush do you use here and/or like the best for line weight? I can never make up my mind if it's easier to use pressure to control weights, or use multiple strokes. Love your videos! Thanks!

Art with Flo

It depends on the type of work, when sketching like this, I prefer to just make multiple strokes. When I want to create a clean outline, I prefer using a brush that makes use of pen pressure to make the stroke thicker.

adizzy

thank you, and thank you for so many exercises that i can do while watching tv :)

CHohyun

Thank you Flo! for making this wonderful teaching.

Rozie

Omg this is so hard. I tried for a good hour but my rocks doesn’t look like anything but scribbles gone mad lol. I’ll have to come back to this exercise. Best part is the information has really drilled into my brain! Love your teaching methods and explanations Flo xxx
