VIDEO TUTORIAL: Painting Droplets (Patreon)
Content
Here's a short breakdown on how to create waterdroplets in Procreate. I heard there was some confusion about the creation process of droplets in the tomato tutorial, that's why I decided to make an extra little video about the steps of creating droplets.
I've added some photo references to this post, so you can practice making waterdroplets. It's very relaxing actually!
Here's a breakdown of the steps:
Base Shape
First make a base shape of the droplet, it will be used to make a selection from. Make sure the shape is fully opaque and has crisp edges.
Add Light
Then make a new layer and set it to screen, this way the texture of the object the droplet is on, will remain visible. Click the layer with the base shape and select selection to make a selection of the shape. Now you can paint the light areas on the new layer. Don't add the super bright highlights yet.
Dark areas
You can follow the same process to add darker areas in the droplet. This time, use the multiply blending mode for your layer. Make sure you have the selection active when working.
Drop shadow
Make a drop shadow for your droplet on a layer beneath the droplet layers. Make sure you turn off the selection this time. If you want the texture of the object underneath to stay visible, you can set this layer to multiply.
Bright Highlights
On a layer on top of all the others, you can add the brightest highlights, there's no need to change the layer blending mode in this step, since the highlights are usually so bright, you won't be able to see the surface underneath the droplet.
Have fun creating droplets! Looking forward to seeing your results.
