This is Flo's Fundamentals! In this series I show how you can paint different fundamental subjects. Pieces of the puzzle you can use in your digital paintings. In this seventh class we'll be diving into the subject of feathers and scales!

In the first part of the video, I'll talk about the theory. What are the characteristics of feathers and scales? And do we really need to paint each and every feather or scale?

In the second part of the video, I'll be doing a demonstration and show you how I approach painting feathers and scales. I've attached the study file, you can use it to both check my work up close and to make your own study.

I would also recommend checking out my Pinterest board with feathers and scales reference images. Try making studies from different reference images to improve your tree painting skills! And if you ever struggle or have questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm here to help!

I mostly used the Flotastic brush set, you can get it through this post if you haven't  already. I have also added two extra brushes to this post which might come in handy when creating scales.

The next Flo's Fundamentals will be about Perspective!

Flo's Fundamentals: Painting Feathers and Scales

In this episode of Flo's Fundamentals, I will show you how you can approach painting feathers and scales in Procreate. I'll show you how you don't have to paint each individual scale or feather to get a realistic effect.

I really loved this demo! At the end you mention Blue Snake and Parrot tutorials... are they through the Master Student Patreon only? I'm on the Eager Learner but can't seem to find them, just wondering if it's my membership level or if I'm just rusty at finding things lol. In any case, thank you for another wonderful video!

I was looking for that too! I think it’s for master students

Eager Learner gives access to the tutorials from the current month and previous three months. The parrot and snake are older and only available to Master Students.

Tracey Kramer

Thank you! I am enjoying all your tutorials. Learning so very much.

Hi Flo! Great tutorial as always! Just wondering if, in your opinion, it's better to start a painting in color or if it is better to just start in grayscale to focus only on values and then add color later via a Color layer or other method?

When making a full color artwork, I usually like to start in color straight away. But there is no right or wrong way, just personal preferences.

Thanks a lot! It’s useful for dragon drawings.
