Here's  the new Pick a Ref video tutorial! Thank you all for submitting a reference image and voting in the monthly poll.

The original photo was made by Geert Weggen: https://geertweggen.com (check his website for even more lovely squirrel photos)  Please be sure to give credit to the photographer when sharing your work.

Canvas Size: 3000 x 4000

I hope you'll enjoy the video! It was a pretty challenging project and I guess it's about advanced level. A part of the video is a screen recording, you can adjust the speed of the video or just skip through it. At the end of the video I went back to a full recording, adding final tweaks and talking about my process.

An important step is changing the composition of the piece. You can learn more about composition in this YouTube video I made quite a while back.

Could you include the working file by chance? I like to analyze the differences between my finished result and yours! 😁

Until my sketching is overall improved, is it cheating (or counterproductive and teaching bad habits) to trace a sketch layer over the ref image when doing these?

Wwoa amazing

I'm sorry, but I have stopped sharing my working files after multiple patrons have stolen my work and put their own signature on it.

Cory Cottingham

Oh that is awful! I didn't know that! Thank you for telling me :)

Natalie Pollard

A lot of people start out tracing reference images as a teaching process or use it as a guide but then stylise . Just got to not become to reliant on it I guess .

Natalie Pollard

I’ve never been one to do realism as such , it’s been fun to give some a go, but definitely not my level lol. However, I do enjoy laying in bed and watching your advanced tutorials ☺️

Angel

geez, how can people even do that? But I did see it in my line of work too

Angel

Thanks Flo, this looks amazing. I am looking forward to making this :)

This is awesome. I use more more layers, and go back and redo changes, to remove or improve various my layers! I'm not sure i will finish. I do still trace the animal from the picture, but try to draft the tree, berries, leaves, trunk and mushrooms - but my drafting isn't where my squirrel should look... practice...

Art with Flo

tracing is actually a great way to exercise, so don't worry about it. Just make sure you try and practice to break loose from it eventually as well. Have fun!

so beautiful & i cannot wait to start this one 🥰
