I definitely enjoyed this movie more when my mind was separate from the novel!

The Simpsons did a good parody you can find on YouTube. "The Shinning" (FULL, WITH DELETED SCENE) Treehouse of Horror V

Ronnie

*This is the shorter European cut of the movie. Been awhile since I've seen this version. *I wish the famous hospital scene that was cut out a few days after its release still existed. But apparently we'll just have to settle for the images printed in the Taschen book volume. 🫤 *Danny Lloyd - such a decent guy. He's now a school teacher. ♥️ *Kubrick is my favorite director - this was his only horror outing. Of his other 12 movies, for you I'd specifically recommend "A Clockwork Orange" above his others. *I prefer the movies you watch be seen in the smaller box. 👍

This seems a different edit than I'm used to as it doesn't have Danny at the start having his collapse. So misses out what happened with him and his Dad, more Tony background and the important part which helps explain the man in the bear suit. If you are a fan Stephen King then definitely do Mr Sleep, it's said to be a lot more faithful to the novel. When it comes to Kubrick he didn't really do many horror films per se, but the closest is a Clockwork Orange I guess. He is one of the few directors I would actually call a genius along with Lynch. Oh and personally I prefer having the way you usually do your videos rather than the small circle, feels a lot more like watching with yourself seeing your reactions like that.

Benbobjr

Ah it being a European cut makes a lot more sense, any idea if Kubrick edited it?

Ronnie

Definitely! Warner Bros. allowed him final cut on every film he made... when he was alive. 👈 Of course I'm alluding to the silliness done to the North American release of "Eyes Wide Shut" after he had died.

Daniel Hohm

I like you in a bigger picture better.

Benbobjr

Shows impatient me should only post after seeing the whole video, but the whole Furies part is kind of explained at the start in this editions edited out scene. After passing out Danny is resting on a big teddy bear which looks exactly like the one who one who was seen through the doorway.

Benbobjr

Not sure if I have seen the American cut of that film. I love Eyes Wide Shut despite it not being seen in high regard,

Ronnie

I think EWS is brilliant. And yes, it is underappreciated.

Paulieee91

Remember that clip , of them making the whole thing, i think have a different version there was a whole scene of Danny after his vision and before the car ride scene

One minute in and your bubble is already freaking me out. It makes me think of some of the freaky bubbles in The Return. Is Bob in there with you?

Jamie

You're aware that Jack Nicholson played the Joker in the first Tim Burton Batman I assume? (Just for to the Heath Ledger reference)

BullydogBear

There's a whole rabbit hole of youtube videos about how the hotel's layout, including the maze is physically impossible in order to help create a subtle, subliminal sense that things aren't right there.

BullydogBear

The Shining was one of the first films to extensively use the Steadicam, which had only developed a few years before, (following Danny on his bigwheel is one of the more famous uses). James Cameron (besides using Steadicams) also repurposed the Steadicam rig/idea for Marines Vasquez and Drake and their M56 machine guns in "Aliens."

Dr Sleep would be great to watch, it's a very rare example of a sequel released years after the original that's actually good

BullydogBear

The Euro version cuts out (IMO) the fairly important scene of the doctor visiting the Torrence's home (which, in itself, is unsettling with bookshelves looking on the verge of collapse), Danny's previous "accident," and Wendy's timidity in trying to excuse Jack's behavior laying the ground work for why she continues to take his abuse. Danny Lloyd also makes cameo appearance in Doctor Sleep.

Ronnie

100% agree that scene is essential. Also of interest is that Danny's Goofy doll exactly resembles Wendy's look in that scene. Make what you will of that.

BullydogBear

You're one of the few to catch most Jack's 4th wall breaks - most of his glances are usually very subtle, but that makes them all the more disturbing.

You should absolutely watch Doctor Sleep! It's a fantastic film, and a perfect marriage of both the novel and the Kubrick film. Even Stephen King, who notoriously hated the Kubrick film, loves it!

Kimmie Koneko

It's not a horror film, but it's kind of a Lynchian psychosexual Odyssey: Eyes Wide Shut! Kubrick's last finished film (Spielberg finished A.I. after his death), and one of my favorites

NordicUnderreactor

Your Audrey shirt❤️❤️ Where did you get it? I can’t find it anywhere😭

Brett D

David Lynch said that he was told personally by Stanley Kubrick that Eraserhead was his favorite film, and it was a big influence when he made The Shining. Kubrick screened it for the cast & crew as they were preparing to shoot to help them understand the kind of mood he wanted to establish.

Shaundgb

Is this like a different version of the movie I have never seen.

Shaundgb

I absolutely love the view at the start of driving in those hills. Looks epic. There are no massive mountains like this in Australia so it blows my mind how high up it is. I do not remember the intro of those views being so long before but loved watching the start this time. Also was the Meryl Strepp as the secretary at the start. I do not remember her being in this. This nuts if I missed noticing her before. Maybe some of these early shots were not in the movie I saw originally.

Shaundgb

You are right. Jack Nicholson character was so off from the start. Damn, they picked the right actor for this role. He is so creepy the way he smiles. The look of contempt he gives he wife when he is having breakfast in bed after she tells him some idea will come to him for the book. Like he just looks at her, like she is the last person in the world he wants advice from on the writing a novel. It is scary the seeds of disturbance he already has in him from the start that just laying there dormant for something to trigger him to go fully off the wall crazy.

Shaundgb

The Audrey shirt is awesome.

Jimmie V

Personally, the only American directors I put in my own S tier are Lynch and Kubrick so yeah, I get what you mean by putting them in that small category of genius.

Shaundgb

Watching this again has been fantastic. I love the style of the old hotel and the way the whole movie is shot it just makes you feel like you are there. Also love how everything in it feels so late 1970's so you can tell it is not done in the mid 1980's or the 1960's or early 70's. It just has the look of 1979 to 1981 spot on with clothes style, electronic equipment styles and the way people behaved then too. It just a fantastic movie by Stanley Kubrick and his actors and technical people. I think he did 2001: A Space Odyssey and Clockwork Orange. He certainly had his own style of shooting scenes that different to others of his era. I did not like his movie Eyes Wide Shut but The Shining is easily one of the best horror movies ever. A lot of horror movies struggle to create an atmosphere that feels really haunting and eerie throughout a movie. It is why I do not consider myself a horror genre watcher in general as a lot of horror movies just do nothing for me. I love the rare ones like this and Fire Walk With Me that just create an atmosphere you will remember as a movie for the rest of your life.

"I'm not the one. I'd tell you that." Iconic ❤️😂😂

Dirk Diggler

There is one flaw to this movie for me. I don't understand how Danny put out a distress signal to Hallorann all the way in Florida with the Shining, but they can't communicate using it in close proximity once Hallorann shows up. Like "Look out! My dad's got an axe!" And Hallorann shows up completely unarmed! 🤦‍♂️C'mon, he was worried enough that he flew coast to coast with his own money, but took no precautions.
