This one was a whole gorram rollercoaster lol. I feel like the crew's dynamic just keeps getting better and better. Mal's still out here walking the fine line between 'hero of Canton' energy and 'just trying to keep my ship and crew flying'. It's awesome how this show has me laughing one second and tearing up the next. Can't wait to see where the 'verse takes us next time.. Stuck in a waiting room for probably another hour or so... Sure do wish I had my ear buds! 😣

Aaron Chandler

I don't want to alarm you, but you're already more than a quarter of the way through the series. Soooooooooo

I really love Mal and Inara's dynamic and especially getting to see more of it in this episode! There definitely seems to be a lot there. So much said with so few words between them haha Mal is such an interesting character in the sense that he's the 'good bad-guy'. Sure he's a 'criminal' by conventional means, but he's got standards, and morals, and boundaries that he's not willing to cross. I always love a flawed and nuanced character who isn't just straight up black and white good or bad

kaliwali

oh nooo! I hope everything is okay 🩷

kaliwali

hahahaha wait, what name 🤣

kaliwali

noooooooo I can't accept this. maybe I should slow down on episodes 🤣

Aaron Chandler

Well, let's not be rash... I would sit down and binge the remaining eps plus the movie with you in one sitting right now if that was an option.

Aaron Chandler

I can't say right now, but I hope you remember when we get there because it will be hi-larious.

kaliwali

LOL and I would do that, too!

So about River in the pantry: In the background of the show (both literally and figuratively) is the Blue Sun Corporation. If you take a close look at the "Cry Baby" that helped them escape the Alliance ship in the first episode, it was made out of a Blue Sun labelled coffee can. There was also background marketing signage on Persephone. Blue Sun is a mega-conglomerate that makes basically everything (e.g. coffee, canned food, t-shirts, etc). When River was tearing the labels off of the food cans, the hidden context is that they were Blue Sun labels. In my opinion, the camera work that does not show the name on the labels well hurts the narrative of the scene leading to viewer confusion. River was expressing her distain for Blue Sun. She was also muttering about "they come when you call". You probably can surmise who the "they" are in this context and why it evokes such an emotional reaction from River.

There are so many scenes with unspoken words in this show! It makes it feel so much more dramatic and thought-provoking, for sure. And yesss, Mal and Inara's unspoken words are full of some interesting tension lol. I'm starting to really love Mal. And I think it's for a lot of the reasons why Kaylee loves him so much. Because even after everything you think you know about him, he'll go and surprise you by doing the opposite on a whim 😂

I'm really enjoying watching this series again with someone who hasn't seen it. It is a shame they cancelled it so quickly, IMO, if FOX would have let it keep going I think by season two, word of mouth would have made it one of the biggest sci-fi shows on tv. I heard rumors that the creator of the show Josh Whedon was having issues with some FOX executives, and they didn't support the show.

kaliwali

I definitely agree with you! This could have been a very popular sci-fi show on tv if they would have allowed it to grow and not messed up the scheduling/episode order 😩

MertzRocks

Right you are, McShades. He definitely had a problem with The FOX Suits, and they with him. The Suits wanted another Buffy - or maybe 'Buffy in Space!' lol, and got Joss Whedon's 'baby'. He had been given the green light to make the show he wanted and then the Suits didn't like it much, so they aired it in the Friday 10 o'clock death-slot, made promos for it that made no sense, aired episodes out of order and it ended up being pre-empted several times for sports events, so it wasn't even on every week. Hard to get ANY ratings or even any viewers with all those hurdles. Yet the suits figured it was the fault of the show, not the sabotage (accidental or purposeful) that happened to it. Nearly every show on FOX ever airing in that time slot ended up being canceled and usually after just one season. Firefly didn't even get its 20-something episodes it should have had for season one. The ignorance/obtuseness of executives can be staggering, but this was beyond. If the Suits had let the show continue, by the end of season one it probably would have been clear that Joss *had* made the show they wanted with the potential to KICK BUFFY'S LITTLE BUTT! It would perhaps then have re-run in a better slot over the summer and gained the following it deserved. Well they didn't do that and they certainly know now how badly they effed up. Once the DVD numbers started coming in, they knew they had just thrown away whole Alliance Cruisers full of cashy money...

MertzRocks

I agree. It wasn't clear at all why she was doing that. The Blue Sun storyline probably would have gotten going at the end of season one, but of course we'll never know and I'm just guessing... The novels and comics shed more light on this subject.

MertzRocks

Big hearts for this reaction ❤️❤️ 12 and a half months later, and it's snowing here and over 15 or 16 states right now. Where I am is supposed to get 10 inches... We'll see... 🤞

Kaylee has such interesting contrasts. Half the time she’s grimy and covered in grease. She seems to know more about engines than anybody and has incredible talents doing that kind of stuff yet she’s also has butterflies and rainbows and pink fluffy dresses in a room. She’s so gentle and sweet with people yet sometimes she’s outwardly aggressive with her affection towards Simon. She is very passionate about things. Her love of food, her love of people. I love Simon’s description of her, It’s so apt he says “you manage to find the bright side of every single thing.” It’s so true. People like that are so rare and everyone loves being around them. A kind of funny sidenote the actress that plays Kaylee (Jewel Staite) apparently the one food that she can’t stand is strawberries.
