This one was a stark contrast to the brutal combat from Part One and Two. Seeing the Marines in this light in Melbourne, exhausted but celebrated as true heroes, felt like a much-needed breath from the horrors back on Guadalcanal. The shift in tone was actually jarring after so much suffering. Robert Leckie's romance with Stella was a warm welcome and I'm glad that it gave him a much-needed brief escape from the war. At first, it felt like he finally found some peace. A new family to call his own that prayed for his safe return instead of worry about a car engine. But then the looming reality of his duty as a Marine made it clear that nothing would last, and he isn't in control of his fate anymore. This episode was all about that false sense of peace. By the end of the episode, it was crystal clear that no matter how far they traveled, the war would always follow them. Even though this episode wasn't about combat, it showed a different kind of battle: the Marine's fight to hold onto any sense of normalcy, even when they know it's slipping away.
